  • In this paper, we propose a stereo image composition method based on Poisson image editing. If we synthesize images without considering their depth values, it may lead to unwanted consequences. When we segment an image into its background and foreground regions using Grabcut, we take into account their geometric positions to mix color tones; thus, the image is composited more naturally. After synthesizing images, we apply a blurring operation around object boundaries; then, the foreground object and background are composited more seamlessly. In addition, we can adjust the distance of the object by setting arbitrary depth values and generating right color and depth images automatically. Experimental results show that the proposed stereo image composition method provides naturally synthesized stereo images. Improved portions were subjectively confirmed as well.

  • Current binocular stereoscopic displays cause visual discomfort when objects with large disparities are present in the scene. One solution for improving visual comfort is synthetic depth-of-field processing, which simulates the characteristics of a human visual system. With this technique, visual comfort is improved by blurring portions of the background and/or foreground in the scene. However, this technique has the drawback of degrading overall image quality because the blurring is typically applied to both left and right images. To alleviate the visual discomfort, we propose a novel disparity-based asymmetrical filtering technique. Proposed technique applies the filtering to the image of one eye only, and controls the blur level according to the disparity information between stereoscopic images. We investigate the effects of this technique on stereoscopic video by measuring visual comfort and apparent sharpness. Our results indicate that disparity-based asymmetrical filtering can improve visual comfort of stereoscopic video while it maintains apparent sharpness if unfixated regions with large disparities are blurred under the appropriate filtering condition.

  • Depth recovery in robot vision is an essential problem to infer the three dimensional geometry of scenes from a sequence of the two dimensional images. In the past, many studies have been proposed for the depth estimation such as stereopsis, motion parallax and blurring phenomena. Among cues for depth estimation, depth from lens translation is based on shape from motion by using feature points. This approach is derived from the correspondence of feature points detected in images and performs the depth estimation that uses information on the motion of feature points. The approaches using motion vectors suffer from the occlusion or missing part problem, and the image blur is ignored in the feature point detection. This paper presents a novel approach to the defocus technique based depth from lens translation using sequential SVD factorization. Solving such the problems requires modeling of mutual relationship between the light and optics until reaching the image plane. For this mutuality, we first discuss the optical properties of a camera system, because the image blur varies according to camera parameter settings. The camera system accounts for the camera model integrating a thin lens based camera model to explain the light and optical properties and a perspective projection camera model to explain the depth from lens translation. Then, depth from lens translation is proposed to use the feature points detected in edges of the image blur. The feature points contain the depth information derived from an amount of blur of width. The shape and motion can be estimated from the motion of feature points. This method uses the sequential SVD factorization to represent the orthogonal matrices that are singular value decomposition. Some experiments have been performed with a sequence of real and synthetic images comparing the presented method with the depth from lens translation. Experimental results have demonstrated the validity and shown the applicability of the proposed method to the depth estimation.

  • In this paper, Acousto-Optical tomography is modeled by a linear integral equation and an inverse problem involving a diffusion equation in n-spatial dimensions. We make two-step mathematical model. First, we solve a linear integral equation. Assuming the optical energy fluence rate has been recovered from the previous equation, the absorption coefficient ${\mu}$ is then reconstructed by solving an inverse problem. Numerical experiments are presented for the case n=2. The traditional gradient descent method is used for the numerical simulations. The result of the gradient descent method produces the blurring effect. To get rid of the blurring effect, we suggest the total variation regularization for the minimization problem.

  • A new quantization constraint set based on the theory of Projection onto Convex Set(POCS) is proposed to reduce blocking artifact appearing in block-coded images. POCS-based postprocessing for alleviating the blocking artifact consists of iterative projections onto smoothness constraint set and quantization constraint set, respectively. In general, the conventional quantization constraint set has the maximum size of range where original image data can be included, therefore over-blurring of restored image is unavoidable as iteration proceeds. The projection onto the proposed quantization constraint set can reduce blocking artifact as well as maintain the clearness of the decoded image, since it controls adaptively the size of quantization constraint set according to the DCT coefficients. Simulation results using the proposed quantization constraint set as a substitute for conventional quantization constraint set show that the blocking artifact of the decoded image can be reduced by the small number of iterations, and we know that the postprocessed image maintains the distinction of the decoded image.

  • This study analyzed the expressive phenomenon of a blurred boundary in fashion jewelry focused on the relationship between fashion jewelry and costume or fashion jewelry and body. The method of this study was to analyze recent documentaries about jewelry theories in regards to 607 cases of fashion jewelry design in fashion books, fashion magazines, fashion internet sites from 2000 to 2014. The results were: First, phenomenon of blurred boundary between fashion jewelry and costume was expressed in a see-through wear form made of luxury material (gold and diamond) or paste material, a similar form (like fashion accessories made of crystal, bids, and gold chain), an integration of fashion accessories and jewelry, and an attached jewelry on fashion accessories. It reflected a rearrangement of conventional relationships, a blurred relation of function and meaning, dissolution of jewelry form stereotypes, jewelry styling, a harmony of function and decoration, and an alteration to the central role of a fashion image. Second, the phenomenon of a blurred boundary between fashion jewelry and body was expressed in a body organ wrapping, body surface adhesion and sculptural jewelry based on body pose. It reflected a separation from conventional space of jewelry expression, a realization of mystery and fantastic, an expression of new body surface and a blurred boundaries of fashion jewelry and body art. Aesthetic characteristics were analyzed into metaphor and integration by separation from the conventional relationship of fashion jewelry and costume or fashion jewelry and body.

  • This study is to segment white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) on a brain MR image and to calculate the volume of each. First, after removing the background on a brain MR image, we segmented the whole region of a brain from a skull and a fat layer. Then, we calculated the partial volume of each component, which was present in scanning finite thickness, with the arithmetical analysis of gray value from the internal region of a brain showing the blurring effects on the basis of the MR image forming principle. Calculated partial volumes of white matter, gray matter and CSF were used to determine the threshold for the segmentation of each component on a brain MR image showing the blurring effects. Finally, the volumes of segmented white matter, gray matter, and CSF were calculated. The result of this study can be used as the objective diagnostic method to determine the degree of brain atrophy of patients who have neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and cerebral palsy.

  • Camouflage is evaluated by scientific principle in the fields of biology, military science, and art. It has a strong influence on contemporary fashion and means exposure with concealment. This study analyzed the visual characteristics of camouflage patterns in fashion design through documentaries and fashion photos. The fashion design results areas follow. The simple blending of a disruptive motif indicated an inaccurate repetition of a disruptive motif, the discontinuous or continuous connection of disruptive motif, the irregular repetition of a disruptive animal silhouette, the collage of a different disruptive motif, the craft of a disruptive motif and the intensive color match of a disruptive motif. It represented the maximization of complication, fantastic and fanciness. The overlap of a disruptive motif showed the overlap of disruptive print patterns with transparency and an overlap of different fabrics with a disruptive pattern. It represented spatial relationships of three dimensions as well as the maximization of visual illusion and the reinforcement of attractiveness. The blurring of a disruptive motif showed the pointage of disruptive motif, the pointage of image, value gradation, the whole blurring of a disruptive pattern cluster and stained appearance. It represented the obscurity of motif form, the uncertainty of object and double meaning. The trompe l'oeil of a partial background object showed the realistic and the painterly imitation of color and texture for partial objects through a close-up. It represented amazement and pleasure by illusion, scarcity and the decoration of surface and synecdochical remind. In conclusion, camouflage in fashion was weakened and modified from a classical military context by a unique expression of various motifs.

  • Surveillance cameras installed in tunnels capture the various video frames effected by dynamic and variable factors. In addition, localizing and managing the cameras in tunnel is not affordable, and quality of capturing frame is effected by time. In this paper, we introduce a new method to detect and track the vehicles in tunnel by using surveillance cameras installed in a tunnel. It is difficult to detect the video frames directly from surveillance cameras due to the motion blur effect and blurring effect on lens by dirt. In order to overcome this difficulties, two new methods such as Differential Frame/Non-Maxima Suppression (DFNMS) and Haar Cascade Detector to track cars are proposed and investigated for their feasibilities. In the study, it was shown that high precision and recall values could be achieved by the two methods, which then be capable of providing practical data and key information to an automatic accident detection system in tunnels.

  • This paper proposes not only the thresholding problem which has been one of the major problems in the pre-existing edge detection method but also the removal of blurring effect occurred at the edge regions due to the smoothing process. The structure of a given image is assigned as one of the three predefined image structure classes by evaluating its toll membership value to each reference structure class:The structure of an image belongs to the structure class which has the least cost value with the image. Upon the structure class assigned, noise removal and edge extraction precesses are performed, e.g., the smoothing algorithm is applied to the image if its structure belongs to the pure noise region class; edge extraction while removing the noise is performed simultaneously if the edge structure class. The proposed method shows that preventing the blurring effect can be usually seen in the edge images and extracting the edges with no using thresholding value by the experiments.
