Xeliri Plus Bevacizumab Compared with Folfiri Plus Bevacizumab as First-Line Setting in Patients with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: Experiences at Two-Institutions

  • Background: Efficacy of chemotherapy plus bevacizumab has been shown in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) compared with chemotherapy alone. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FOLFIRI or XELIRI regimens in combination with bevacizumab for mCRC patients in a first-line setting. Materials and Methods: A total of 132 patients with previously untreated and histologically confirmed mCRC were included. They were treated with either FOLFIRI-Bevacizumab (Bev) or XELIRI-Bev according to physician preference. The efficacy and safety of the two regimens were compared. Results: Between 2006 and 2010, 68 patients were treated with the XELIRI-Bev regimen, while the remaining 64 patients received the FOLFIRI-Bev regimen. The median age was 58.5 years (53.6 years in the FOLFIRI-Bev and 59.7 years in the XELIRI-Bev arm, p=0.01). Objective response rate was 51.6% for FOLFIRI-Bev versus 41.2% for XELIRI-Bev (p=0.38). At the median follow-up of 24.5 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was not different between two groups (14.2 months in FOLFIRI-Bev vs. not reached in the XELIRI-Bev, p=0.30). However, median overall survival time for the FOLFIRI-Bev arm was better than that for patients treated with XELIRIBev, but these differences was not statistically significant (37.8 months vs. 28.7 months, respectively, p=0.58). Most commonly reported grade 3-4 toxicities (FOLFIRI-Bev vs XELIRI-Bev) were nausea/vomiting (7.8% vs. 14.7%, p=0.27), diarrhea (10.9% vs 22.1%, p=0.10), hand-foot syndrome (0% vs 8.8%, p=0.02) and neutropenia (18.7% vs 27.9%, p=0.22). Conclusion: Our results showed that FOLFIRI-Bev and XELIRI-Bev regimens were similarly effective treatments in a first-line setting for patients with untreated mCRC, with manageable adverse event profiles.

Existence of antibodies against bovine enterovirus in humans and various animals in Korea (사람 및 동물에 대한 소 엔테로바이러스 항체 분포 조사)

  • Bovine enteroviruses (BEVs) were separated into two groups, BEV-1 and BEV-2. BEVs, found in cattle worldwide, usually cause asymptomatic infections and are excreted in the feces of infected animals. Antibodies against BEV have been found in different species including human, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, horses and monkeys in the world. This study aimed to investigate prevalence of the neutralizing antibodies for BEVs in human and animals in Korea. Antibodies against BEV-1 in humans, cattle, pigs, goats, horses and dogs were shown to be 46.8%, 48.3%, 70.6%, 11.5%, 11.5% and 6.3% respectively. Also, antibodies against BEV-2 were shown to be 98.7%, 68.1%, 89.2%, 59.4%, 9.4% and 96.9% respectively. We found that the neutralizing antibodies against these viruses are common in Korea. The prevalences of antibodies against BEV-1 were lower than those against BEV-2 in humans and in all animals except horses. These results showed that the BEV is considered endemic in cattle in many regions in Korea.

XELOX Plus Bevacizumab vs. FOLFIRI Plus Bevacizumab Treatment for First-line Chemotherapy in Metastatic Colon Cancer: a Retrospective Study of the Anatolian Society of Medical Oncology

  • Background: XELOX plus bevacizumab (XELOX-Bev) and FOLFIRI plus Bevacizumab (FOLFIRI - Bev) treatments are an effective strategies patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC).The aim of this study was to compare efficacy of first-line XELOX-Bev treatment vs FOLFIRI-Bev treatment for mCRC. Materials and Methods: A total of 409 patients with mCRC who received chemotherapy were included and divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (n=298) received XELOX-Bev and Group 2 (n=111) FOLFIRI-Bev. Comparisons were made in terms of overall (OS) and progression-free (PFS) survival, response rate (RR), and grade 3-4 toxicity. Results: Median follow-up was 11 months in Group 1 and 15 months for Group 2. Complete remission was observed in 29 (9.7%) and 2 (1.8%) patients, partial remission in 139 (46.6%) and 27 (24.5%), stable disease in 88 (29.5%) and 49 (44.1%) and progressive disease in 42 (14.1%) and 33 (30.0%) patients in Group 1 and 2, respectively. Median OS was 25 months (range 2-57 months, 95%CI; 22.2-27.7) for Group 1 and 20 months (range 1-67 months, 95%CI; 16.8-23.1) for Group 2 (p=0.036). Median PFS was 9.6 months (range 2-36 months, 95%CI; 8.8-10.4) for Group 1 and 9 months (range 1-44 months, 95%CI; 7.4-10.5) for Group 2 (p=0.019). Objective RR was 56.4% in Group 1 and 26.1% in Group 2 (p<0.001). Conclusions: First-line XELOX-Bev is more effective with a better response rate, prolongation of median PFS/OS, and a superior safety profile compared with FOLFIRI-Bev.

  • This paper proposes an approach for measuring voltage of high voltage(HV) battery of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle(PHEV) and battery electric vehicle(BEV). The proposed methods use isolation resistor and isolation amplifier in order to measure high voltage which should be electrically separated from measuring circuit. In terms of practical applications their advantages and disadvantage are discussed and key design points are addressed by simulations. More importantly, the proposed methods are applicable to various applications such as on-board charger, inverter and battery management system (BMS) which are directly connected to HV battery in PHEV and BEV.

  • This paper proposed a regenerative braking system (RBS) strategy for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) driven by a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. In the regenerative braking mode of BEV, the BLDC motor works as a generator. Consequently, the DC-link voltage is boosted and regenerative braking energy is transferred to a battery and/or ultracapacitor (UC) using a suitable switching pattern of the three-phase inverter. The energy stored in the HESS through reverse current flow can be exploited to improve acceleration and maintain the batteries from frequent deep discharging during high power mode. In addition, the artificial neural network (ANN)-based RBS control mechanism was utilized to optimize the switching scheme of the vehicular breaking force distribution. Furthermore, constant torque braking can be regulated using a PI controller. Different simulation and experiments were implemented and carried out to verify the performance of the proposed RBS strategy. The UC/battery RBS also contributed to improved vehicle acceleration and extended range BEVs.

  • This study was conducted to derive optimal design floods by Gerneralized Extreme Value(GEV) and Weibull-3 distributions for the annual maximum series at ten watersheds along Han,Nagdong, Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin reiver systems. Adequency for the analysis of flood data used in this study was established by the tests of Independence. Homogeneity , detection of Outlines, L-moments. Design flood sobtaine dby /methods of Moments and L-Moments using different methods for plotting positions in BEV and Weibull-3 distributions were compared by the Relative Mean Errors(RME) and Root MEan Square Errors(RMSE). The result wa found that design floods derived by the L-moments using the other formulas for plotting positions from the viewpoint of Relative Mean Errors and Root Mean Square Errors.

Serve as You Learn: Problem-Based Service-Learning Integrated into a Product Innovation and Management Class

  • Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students participate in organized activities and develop a sense of civic responsibility while acquiring content knowledge of the discipline. The purpose of this study was first, to examine the underlying theories and principles of service-learning, and second, to present a case of systemic implementation of problem-based service-learning into a Product Innovation and Management class in higher education. The New Product Development for an E-Commerce Small Business project was developed for a community partner, BevShots, reflecting the needs of the firm, and was tightly woven into the course content. Students' participation in the project had a significant effect on increasing their awareness of the needs in the community and identifying their roles as citizens as well as enhancing their content knowledge learning. The community partner also received benefits for his business by participating in the project. Through this study, we aim to inspire fashion design and merchandising educators to implement service-learning projects/classes in the curriculum.

  • Environmental sustainability is critical; else, the whole planet would face climatic disasters in the near future. A transportation system based on electric vehicles is assumed to be capable of providing long-term mobility. However, despite several attempts by national and international authorities, a great aim could not be met in India or the rest of the globe. Existing electric cars have a number of limits and obstacles. This report highlighted significant environmental and safety-related constraints that contribute to the low adoption rate of BEVs in India. A SWOT analysis was also carried out to identify the important elements influencing the future of BEV penetration in India.

  • This paper proposes an Extended and Adaptive Inverse Perspective Mapping (EA-IPM) model that can obtain an accurate bird's-eye view (BEV) from the forward-looking monocular camera on the sidewalk with various curves. While Inverse Perspective Mapping (IPM) is a good way to obtain ground information, conventional methods assume a fixed relationship between the camera and the ground. Due to the nature of the driving environment of the mobile robot, there are more walking environments with frequent motion changes than flat roads, which have a fatal effect on IPM results. Therefore, we have developed an extended IPM process to be applicable in IPM on sidewalks by adding a formula for complementary Y-derive processes and roll motions to the existing adaptive IPM model that is robust to pitch motions. To convince the performance of the proposed method, we evaluated our results on both synthetic and real road and sidewalk datasets.

  • Effective thermal management in a battery electric vehicle (BEV) is crucial for reducing energy consumption and maximizing driving range in cold climates. Consequently, original equipment manufacturers are actively investing in the development of local heating systems. Visualizing occupant thermal behaviors or comfort can readily provide valuable insights that would substantially impact the design and control strategies of such microclimate systems. This study uses MATLAB for three-dimensional visualization of human thermal psychology. The developed program enables qualitative assessment of occupant comfort in BEVs.
