In this study, the adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ from aqueous solution by the biochar derived from woody biomass at different pyrolysis temperatures has been investigated. The woody biomass wastes used in this study were branch of willow ($Salix$$koreensis$$Andersson$) and bark of chestnut ($Castanea$$crenata$$var.$$dulcis$). Three biochar samples prepared by heating each biomass at temperature of $300^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, and $700^{\circ}C$were tested for the adsorption capacity of Cu. Also the physicochemical properties of the developed biochars were studied using different characterization techniques such as FT-IR, SEM, BET surface area, and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The adsorption of Cu could be well described by Langmuir model for both willow and chestnut biochars with $R^2{\geq}0.98$. The maximum adsorption capacities of the biochar produced at $700^{\circ}C$ from the Langmuir equation were found to be 12.5 mg $g^{-1}$ and 16.9 mg $g^{-1}$ for willow and chestnut, respectively. Chestnut biochar was found to interact more effectively with the active sites available for Cu, resulting higher removal of Cu(II) than wiloow biochar. Ion exchange and surface complexation found to be the main mechanisms involved in the adsorption process. This study demonstrated the feasibility of the biochars derived from woody biomass to be as a low-cost potential adsorbent for heavy metals as Cu(II) removal in aquatic system.

$Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalysts for water gas shift (WGS) reaction were synthesized by co-precipitation method with the fixed molar ratio of Cu/Zn/Al precursors as 45/45/10. Copper and zinc precursor were added into sodium carbonate solution for precipitation and aged for 24h. During the aging period, aluminum precursor was added into the aging solution with different time gap from the precipitation starting point: 6h, 12h, and 18h. The resulting catalysts were characterized with SEM, XRD, BET surface measurement, $N_2O$ chemisorption, TPR, and $NH_3$-TPD analysis. The catalytic activity tests were carried out at a GHSV of $27,986h^{-1}$ and a temperature range of 200 to $400^{\circ}C$. The catalyst morphology and crystalline structures were not affected by aluminum precursor addition time. The Cu dispersion degree, surface area, and pore diameter depended on the aging time of Cu-Zn precipitate without the presence of $Al_2O_3$ precursor. Also, the interaction between the active substance and $Al_2O_3$ became more stronger as aging duration, with Al precursor presented in the solution, increased. Therefore, it was confirmed that aluminum precursor addition time affected the catalytic characteristics and their catalytic activities.

The environmental behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) systems, surfactant plays a critical role in remediation. In this study, sorptive behaviors and partitioning of naphthalene in soils in the presence of surfactants were investigated. Silica and kaolin with low organic carbon contents and a natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content were used as model sorbents. A nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, was used to enhance dissolution of naphthalene. Sorption kinetics of naphthalene onto silica, kaolin and natural soil were investigated and analyzed using several kinetic models. The two compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM) was fitted better than the other models. From the results of TCFOKM, the fast sorption coefficient of naphthalene ($k_1$) was in the order of silica > kaolin > natural soil, whereas the slow sorbing fraction ($k_2$) was in the reverse order. Sorption isotherms of naphthalene were linear with organic carbon content ($f_{oc}$) in soils, while those of Triton X-100 were nonlinear and correlated with CEC and BET surface area. Sorption of Triton X-100 was higher than that of naphthalene in all soils. The effectiveness of a SER system depends on the distribution coefficient ($K_D$) of naphthalene between mobile and immobile phases. In surfactant-sorbed soils, naphthalene was adsorbed onto the soil surface and also partitioned onto the sorbed surfactant. The partition coefficient ($K_D$) of naphthalene increased with surfactant concentration. However, the $K_D$ decreased as the surfactant concentration increased above CMC in all soils. This indicates that naphthalene was partitioned competitively onto both sorbed surfactants (immobile phase) and micelles (mobile phase). For the mineral soils such as silica and kaolin, naphthalene removal by mobile phase would be better than that by immobile phase because the distribution of naphthalene onto the micelles ($K_{mic}$) increased with the nonionic surfactant concentration (Triton X-100). For the natural soil with relatively higher organic carbon content, however, the naphthalene removal by immobile phase would be better than that by mobile phase, because a high amount of Triton X-100 could be sorbed onto the natural soil and the sorbed surfactant also could sorb the relatively higher amount of naphthalene.

From the cooked-rice as a raw material, activated carbons throughout a hydrothermal synthesis and vacuum soak of KOH for chemical activation were obtained. Activated carbon electrodes for electric double layer supercapacitors were prepared and electrochemical characteristics were examined. Including the specific surface area by BET method and pore size distribution by NLDFT method, physical properties of activated carbons were investigated by means of SEM, EDS, XRD, and TG analyses. Cycle voltammetry and AC-impedance measurements were conducted to confirm the electrochemical characteristics for the electrodes. From hydrothermal synthesis, $5{\sim}7{\mu}m$ diameters of spherical carbons were obtained. After the activation at $800^{\circ}C$, it was notable for the activated carbon to be the specific surface $1631.8cm^2/g$, pore size distribution in 0.9~2.1 nm, and micro-pore volume $0.6154cm^3/g$. As electrochemical characteristics of the activated carbon electrode in 6M KOH electrolyte, it was confirmed that the specific capacitances of 236, 194, and 137 F/g at the scan rate of 5, 100, and 500 mV/s respectively were exhibited and 91.2% of initial capacitance after 100,000 cycles at 200 mV/s was maintained.

This study selected the optimal catalyst for the process of producing $C_9$-alcohol by hydrogenating $C_9$-aldehyde, and carried out an experiment in order to establish the operating condition for maximizing the yield of $C_9$-alcohol. The BET surface area and the specific area of copper were most excellent in $CuO/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ (60:30:10 wt%) catalyst produced using acetate as a precursor of copper and $Na_2CO_3$ as a precipitant, and the catalyst also showed the highest performance in $C_9$-aldehyde hydrogenation. Using a trickle bed reactor loaded with optimized catalyst, we attained 94.1 wt% yield of $C_9$-alcohol under the condition of $175^{\circ}C$, 800 psi and $WHSV=3hr^{-1}$. According to the result of comparing with other catalysts used in the hydrogenation of aldehyde, the catalyst showed similar performance to that of Ni/kieselghur and higher than that of $Cu-Ni-Cr-Na/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni-Mo/Al_2O_3$. According to the result of examining the stability of the catalyst through a long-term catalysis test, the yield of $C_9$-alcohol decreased slowly after around 72 hours due to the increasing production of high boiling-point byproducts.

This study was performed to change the hydrophilic $NH_4Y$-zeolite to the hydrophobic one for removal of VOCs by removing the $Al^{3+}$ in the zeolite-structure to increase the Si/Al ratio, for which the three pelleted $NH_4Y$-zeolite samples were contacted separately with the steam of $400^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively, in a stainless steel column for 4 hours. Then extraction of the ex-structure aluminum of the hydrolyzed zeolites with the nitric acids of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 0.10 M at $90^{\circ}C$ in 500 mL-flasks, respectively, according to steam temperature were followed. XRD analysises of the dealuminated zeolites showed that the peaks of the zeolites that had been hydrolyzed with the steams of both $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ are distorted more with the increase of the concentration of nitric acid used for extraction of the ex-structure aluminums, however, those hydrolyzed with steam of $400^{\circ}C$ became amorphous phase when treated with the all nitric acids of four concentrations. Also the EDX analysises showed that the BET surface areas and TPVS of the zeolites that had been hydrolyzed with the steam of $600^{\circ}C$ were increased with the concentration of the nitric acid when the nitric acids of 0.25 M and 0.5 M had been used but decreased when the nitric acids of 0.75 M and 1.0 M had been used. These results led to the conclusion that both the $600^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$-steam and the 0.5 M-nitric acid are appropriate to change the hydrophilic $NH_4Y$-zeolites to the hydrophobic one, which were proven by the measurement of the benzene and tolune-adsorbing capacities showing the same trend as the BET surface area and TPV The Si/Al ratios and water-adsorbing capacities of the dealuminated zeolites were increased and decreased, respectively, with the concentration of the nitric acids so that it showed that the hydrophobicity is increased.

This study investigated the influence of catalyst preparation on the activity of $Co-CeO_2$ catalyst for $N_2O$ decomposition. $Co-CeO_2$ catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation and incipient wetness impregnation. In order to estimate the performance of the as prepared catalysts, direct catalytic $N_2O$ decomposition test was carried out under $250{\sim}375^{\circ}C$. As a result, the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation (CoCe-CP) showed an enhanced performance on $N_2O$ decomposition reaction even in the presence of $O_2$ and/or $H_2O$, whereas the impregnation catalyst (CoCe-IM) did not. In order to investigate the difference in catalytic activity, characterization such as XRD, BET, TEM, $H_2-TPR$, $O_2-TPD$, and XPS was conducted. It is confirmed that the particle size and specific surface area were changed depending on the catalyst preparation method and the synthesis process influenced the physical properties of the catalysts. In addition, the improvement in the activity of the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation is due to the enhanced reduction from $Co^{3+}$ to $Co^{2+}$ and the improved oxygen desorption rate. However, it has been confirmed that the surface electron state and binding energy, which are related to $N_2O$ decomposition, do not change depending on the preparation method.

This study is aimed at investigating an effect of HCl gas on selective reduction of NOx over a CuHM and $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst. SCR process is the most effective method to remove NOx, but catalyst can be deactivated by the acidic gas such as HCl gas which is also included in flue gas from the incinerator. In dry condition of flue gas, the CuHM catalyst treated by HCl gas has shown higher NO removal activity than the fresh catalyst. The activity of the catalyst can be restored by treating at $500^{\circ}C$. On the contrary. $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst is obviously deactivated by HCl and the deactivation increases in proportion to the concentration of HCl gas. The deactivated catalyst is not restored to it's original activity by heat treatment for regeneration. In wet flue gas stream, the CuHM catalyst has shown lower activity than fresh catalyst and $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst was severely deactivated by HCl treatment. The activity loss of catalysts are mainly due to the decrease of Br$\ddot{o}$nsted acid site on the catalyst surface by $NH_3$ TPD. The change of BET surface area of CuHM catalyst after the reaction isn't observed but $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst is observed. The amount of $Cu^{{+}{+}}$ and $V_2O_5$ is decreased after the reaction. From these results, it is expected that CuHM catalyst should be better than $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst for its application to the incineration of flue gas.
The emission of SO2 is inevitable in case of combustion of most fossil fuels except LNG in commercial power plant which has a bad effect on the durability of SCR catalyst. To develop a low temperature SCR catalyst which has a high NOx removal performance and excellent durability to SO2, V2O5/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by coating on the metal foam substrate with the impregnation amount of Sb2O3 as promotor. This study has evaluated the NOx removal performance and the durability to SO2 on a laboratory scale atmospheric reactor and analyzed the properties of the prepared catalysts by means of porosimeter, BET, SEM (scanning electron microscope), EDX (energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). It was found that the surface area of catalyst increased with the impregnation amount of Sb2O3 and the NOx removal performance showed the highest value at the 2 wt% impregnation of Sb2O3. This results was considered to be due to the optimum active site on the catalyst surface. And also, Sb2O3 impregnated catalysts presented that NOx removal performance was maintained despite the exposure to SO2 for 5 hours. Therefore it was confirmed that metal foam SCR catalyst for low temperature could be manufactured with the optimum control of Sb2O3 impregnation according to the SO2 presence or not.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron(nZVI) is famous for its high reactivity originated from its high surface area and it has received considerable attentions as one of the latest innovative technologies for treating contaminated groundwater. Due to its fine powdery form, nZVI has limited filed applications. The efforts to overcome this shortcoming by immobilizing nZVI on a supporting material have been made. This study investigated the differences of resin-supported nZVI's characteristics by changing the preparation methods and evaluated its reactivity. The borohydride reduction of an iron salt was proceeded in ethanol/water solvent containing a dispersant and the synthesis was conducted in the presence of ion-exchange resin. The resulting material was compared to that prepared in a conventional way of using de-ionized water by measuring the phyrical and chemical characteristics. BET surface area and Fe content of nZVI-attached resin was increased from $31.63m^2/g$ and 18.19 mg Fe/g to $38.10m^2/g$ and 22.44 mg Fe/g, respectively, by switching the solution medium from water to ethanol/water with a dispersant. The reactivity of each material was tested using nitrate solution without pH control. The pseudo first-order constant of $0.462h^{-1}$ suggested the reactivity of resin-supported nZVI prepared in ethanol/water was increased 61 % compared to that of the conventional type of supported nZVI. The specific reaction rate constant based on surface area was also increased. The results suggest that this new supported nZVI can be used successfully in on-site remediation for contaminated groundwater.
