Reliable high-speed data communications over insufficient channel bandwidth is one of the major challenges of harsh wireless environments that push the achievable spectral efficiency far below its theoretical limits. A Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) scheme is a userful modulation technique for achieving high data rate transmission without increasing the bandwidth of wireless communication systems. The exact general bit error rate (BER) expression of arbitrary rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation has not yet been derived. In this paper, a generalized closed-form expression for the BER performance of rectangular QAM with Gray code bit mapping is derived and analyzed in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. First we analyze the BER performance of an I-ary PAM scheme. Regular patterns in the k-th bit error probability are observed while developing the EBR expression. From these patterns we provide the exact and general closed-from EBR expression of an I-ary PAM. Then we present a general closed-from expression for BER of an arbitrary IXJ rectangular QAM by considering that this signaling format consists of two PAM scheme, i.e., I-ary and J-ary PAM. A simple approximate BER expression for rectangular QAM is given as well.

Overlap is one of the techniques for increasing bit rate in chirp spread spectrum (CSS). More overlaps can offer higher data throughput; however, they may cause more intersymbol interference (ISI) at the same time, resulting in serious bit error rate (BER) performance degradation. Thus, the number of overlaps should be decided according to the required BER performance. In this paper, we derive a closed form expression for BER of the overlap-based CSS system, exploiting the approximated Gaussian Q function. The derived BER expression includes the number of overlaps as a parameter, and thus, would be very useful in determining the number of overlaps for a specified BER. The numerical results demonstrate that the BER derived in a closed form closely agrees with the simulated BER.

In this paper, we present an exact and general expression involving two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions for the bit error rate (BER) of hierarchical MPSK with I/Q phase and amplitude imbalances over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. First we derive a BER expression for the k-th bit of hierarchical 4, 8, 16-PSK signal constellations when Gray code bit mapping is employed. Then, from the derived k-th bit BER expression, we present the exact and general average BER expression for hierarchical MPSK with I/Q phase and amplitude imbalances. This result can readily be applied to numerical evaluation for various cases of practical interest in an I/Q unbalanced hierarchical MPSK system, because the one- and two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions can be easily and directly computed usinB commonly available mathematical software tools.

The decode-and-forward cooperative communication protocol allows single-antenna users in wireless environments to obtain the powerful benefits of multi-antenna systems without the need for physical arrays. Evaluating the performance of this protocol through simulations is time-consuming and therefore, a need exists for an analytical BER expression to serve as a reference. This paper proposed such an expression for coherently BPSK-modulated data.

The commercialization of the fifth generation (5G) mobile systems has quested enabling technologies, such as intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) transmissions, towards the sixth generation (6G) networks. In this paper, we present a bit-error rate (BER) performance analysis on IRS transmissions in 5G non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. First, we derive a closed-form expression for the BER of IRS-NOMA transmissions under Rician fading channels. Then, by Monte Carlo simulations, we validate the proposed approximate BER expression, and show numerically that the derived BER expression is in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, we also analyze the BER performance of IRS-NOMA networks under Rician fading channels with different numbers of reflecting elements, and demonstrate that the performances improve monotonically as the number of reflecting devices increases.

I/Q phase unbalance caused by non-ideal circuit components is inevitable physical phenomenons and leads to performance degradation when we implement a practical coherent M-ary phase shift keying(M-PSK) demodulator. In this paper, we present an exact and general expression involving two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions for the bit error rate(BER) of uniform M-PSK with I/Q phase unbalance over an additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel. First we derive a BER expression for the k-th bit of 8, 16-PSK signal constellations when Gray code bit mapping is employed. Then, from the derived k-th bit BER expression, we present the exact and general average BER expression for M-PSK with I/Q phase unbalance. This result can readily be applied to numerical evaluation for various cases of practical interest in an I/Q unbalanced M-PSK system, because the one- and two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions can be easily and directly computed using commonly available mathematical software tools.

This paper provides a general and compact expression for the probability density function (pdf) and the moment-generating function (MGF) of the maximal ratio combiner output over Rayleigh fading channels. It is then used to derive closed form expression bit error rate (BER) for M-PSK, M-PAM and M-QAM, respectively. A variety of simulations is performed and shows that they match exactly with analytic ones.

We derive an analytical expression for the bit-error rate (ber) of optimal single user detection (osud) of a binary phase-shift keying (bpsk) signal corrupted by a gaussian cochannel interferer (cci). the channel capacity is also calculated to investigate the ber performance.
Uplink multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) with equal gain combining (EGC) over Nakagami fading channels is considered. An improved expression which is a feasible alternative for the bit error rate (BER) performance evaluation of MC-CDMA signals is proposed. Simulated annealing algorithm is employed to obtain the optimum value of the coefficients belonging to the proposed expression. Numerical examples show that the performance curves computed by the improved expression are in good agreement with the results obtained by the exact expression. Thus, the proposed expression can improve the accuracy of BER performance evaluation that has been realized by the approximate expression.

The exact bit error rate(BER) calculation of an UWB-TH PPM multiple access communication system, which is known to be suitable for the fast transmission of massive information data, is introduced. The statistic feature of the multiple access intereference (MAI) of the system is precisely modeled by the characteristic function technique. The concrete expression for the MAI allows the exact expression for BER to be derived. In addition, we propose the approximate expression for the BER which reveals superior accuracy to the expression from the previous Gaussian approximation of the MAI. The validity of the proposed expressions is confirmed from the comparison of proposed results with the results from Monte-Carlo simulation.
