  • In this paper, we propose a method for improving the performance of low complexity LS channel estimation for OFDM in fast time varying channels. The CE-BEM channel model used for the low complexity LS channel estimation has a problem on its own and deteriorates channel estimation performance. In this paper, we first use time domain windowing in order to remove the effect of ICI caused by data symbols. Then samples are taken from the results of the LS channel estimation and the effects of the windowing are removed from them. For resolving the defect of CE-BEM, the channel responses are recovered by interpolating the resultant samples with DPSS employed as basis functions the characteristics of which is well matched to the time variation of the channel. Computer simulations show that the proposed channel estimation method gives rise to performance improvement over conventional methods especially when channel variation is very fast and confirm that not only which type of functions is selected for the basis but how many functions are used for the basis is another key factor to performance improvement.

  • Current, standards light buoys as maritime traffic safety facilities have 10 different types of buoys and the smallest size of those is 4.4m. Therefore, making for easy replacement and repair parts for the type of small light buoys is proposed. Meanwhile, position reliability of floaters by external forces in the environment fall and stability examination should be considered for prohibiting accidents as loss. In this paper, a new light buoy is analyzed on Encounter Frequency types using commercial program and fluid forces is simulated on cross-sectional shape of the float using two-dimensional Boundary Element Method(BEM).

  • The objective of this study is to understand the generation mechanism of sound and to develop a prediction method for the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan. If the fan is operating at the free field without the casing, the acoustic analogy is a good method to predict the acoustic of the fan. But, the casing gives a dominant effect to the radiated sound field and the scattering effect of casing should be considered. So, in this paper the Kirchhoff-BEM is developed, which can consider the scattering effect of the rigid body. In order to consider the scattering and diffraction effects owing to the casing, BEM is introduced. The source of BEM is newly developed, so the sound field of the centrifugal fan can be obtained. In order to compare the predicted one with experimental data, a centrifugal impeller and a wedge are used in the numerical calculation and the results are compared with the experimental data. Reasonable results are obtained not only for the peak frequencies but also for the amplitudes of the tonal sound. The radiated acoustic field shows the diffraction and scattering effects of the wedge clearly.

  • Nearfield acoustic holography method predicts an unmeasured sound field, therefore it depends on its prediction methods. In particular, if one has radiators or scatters, which cannot be expressed by simple geometry, then inverse boundary element method (BEM) is normally employed to reconstruct the sound field induced by sound sources with irregular profiles. The characteristics of boundary element, including the element shape, characteristic length, order of shape function and others, affect the reconstruction error. Investigating the errors by means of changing these factors will provide a guide line for selecting appropriate factors, associated with the elements of BEM. These factors are investigated by numerical simulations, and the accuracies with respect to the variant factors are compared. Novel suggestions for selecting appropriate boundary element factors are described based on the simulation results.

  • In recent years, the maturity of the technology for a high speed underwater vehicle using supercavitation increase, it is entering the stage of applied research for practical use. In this study, hydrodynamic performance of the supercavitating object was evaluated by using a Viscous-Potential based Boundary Element Method(VP-BEM). 27 models with different shape parameters such as body diameter, length and fore-body shape were considered. The process of the supercavity development of each model was simulated, and drag generated according to operating conditions such as changes in water depth was analyzed.

  • Recent developments in the prediction of the contribution of windnoise to the interior SPL have opened a realm of new possibilities in terms of i) how the convective and acoustic sources terms can be identified, ii) how the interaction between the source terms and the side glass can be described and finally iii) how the transfer path from the sources to the interior of the vehicle can be modelled. This work discusses in details these three aspects of wind noise simulation and recommends appropriate methods to deliver required results at the right time based on i) simulation and experimental data availability, ii) design stage at which a decision must be made and iii) time available to deliver these results. Several simulation methods are used to represent the physical phenomena involved such as CFD, FEM, BEM, FE/SEA Coupled and SEA. Furthermore, a 1D and 2D wavenumber transformation is used to extract key parameters such as the convective and the acoustic component of the turbulent flow from CFD and/or experimental data whenever available. This work focuses on the validation of the wind noise source characterization method and the vibro-acoustic models on which the wind noise sources are applied.

  • Two twin microphones may produce particular patterns of binaural directivity by time delays between the twin microphones. The boundary element method (BEM) was used for the simulation of the sound pressure field around the KEMAR head model in order to quantify the acoustic head effect. The sound pressure onto the microphone was calculated by the BEM to an incident sound pressure. Then a planar directivity pattern was formed by four sound pressure signals from four microphones. The optimal binaural directivity pattern may be achieved by adjusting time delays at each frequency while maintaining the forward beam pattern is relatively bigger than the backward beam pattern. The simulation results were verified by the experimental measurement.

  • A BEM is highly efficient method in the sense of economic computation. However, boundary integration is not easy for the complex and moving surface e.g. in a rotating blade. Thus, Kirchhoff surface is designed in an effort to overcome the difficulty resulting from complex boundary conditions. A Kirchhoff surface is a fictitious surface which envelopes acoustic sources of main concern. Acoustic sources may be distributed on each Kirchhoff surface element depending on its acoustic characteristics. In this study, an axial fan is assumed to have loading noise as a dominant source. Dipole sources can be computed based on the FW-H equation. Acoustic field is then computed by changing Kirchhoff surface on which near-field is implemented, to analyze the effect of Kirchhoff surface on it.

  • In scroll compressors, there are two major noise sources. Sturctural path: excitation of the compressor housing by unbalance forces and forces generated by compression cycle. Gas cavity path: excitation of top cap by discharge gas pulsation. In this study, in order to analyze the radiated noise generated by the discharge gas pulsation, FEM/BEM model of the top cap is established. Measured pressure of discharge pulsation is introduced in the FEM model as the excitation and vibration response is calculated. Radiated sound pressure is then obtained by BEM method based on this vibration response. Results are compared with the measured data. It is shown that the trend of the noise radiation can be predicted in this approadch.
