  • The growing conditions of barium nitrate Ba(NO3)2 single crystals by aqueous solution method have been studied. Supersaturation of Ba(NO3)2 was 0.7% at 32.0$^{\circ}C$ and about 3% 34.0$^{\circ}C$. The obtained single crystals have three kind of morphology; the tertrahedron, the cube and rarely dodecahedron face. The faces of obtained crystals have been identified by X-ray diffractometer.

Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Human Metapneumovirus Infections, in Comparison with Respiratory Syncytial Virus A and B (소아에서 발생한 Human metapneumovirus 감염의 임상-역학적 특징: Respiratory Syncytial Virus A and B 감염과의 비교)

  • Purpose: To identify the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of human metapneumovirus infections (hMPV) in children compared to respiratory syncytial virus A (RSV A) and B (RSV B). Method: A retrospective review of medical records was performed in 36 patients with hMPV infection, 106 with RSV A infection, and 51 with RSV B infection, from September 2007 to July 2012. Results: The peak incidence of hMPV infection was observed in May, whereas for RSV infections in November and December. hMPV infection occurred in older patients compared to RSV A and B infection ($29.9{\pm}32.5$ months vs. $13.6{\pm}15.4$ months, P<0.001; $29.9{\pm}32.5$ months vs. $12.1{\pm}13.5$ months, P<0.001, respectively). hMPV infection was more often associated with fever compared to RSV A (97.2% vs. 67.9%, P<0.001), while wheezing was less frequent compared to RSV A and B infection (16.7% vs. 47.2%, P=0.001; 16.7% vs. 37.3%, P=0.037, respectively). hMPV infection was more often diagnosed as pneumonia compared to RSV A infection (72.2% vs. 50.0%, P=0.047) while bronchiolitis was less frequent than in RSV A (5.6% vs. 34.9%, P=0.001) or RSV B infection (5.6% vs. 29.4%, P=0.006). In addition, intravenous antibiotic was more often prescribed for patients with hMPV infection than those with RSV A and B (69.4% vs. 39.6%, P=0.002; 69.4% vs. 43.1, P=0.015, respectively). Conclusion: This study identified characteristics of hMPV infection compared to RSV A and B infection. Seasonality in spring, higher age group, and higher proportion of pneumonia in hMPV infections may be a useful guide for management of respiratory viral infections in children.

Removal of Dyes by the Biosorption Using Biomass of Penicillium janthinellum (Penicillium janthinellum 균체를 이용한 생물흡착에 의한 염료의 제거)

  • A biosorption of azo and reactive dyes into the intact and modified biomass of Penicillium janthinellum were investigated. Initial pH of medium affected the initial adsorption rate and decolorization. The initial optimum pH was found to be 2.0, and the maximum adsorption rates of dyes were $40^{\circ}C$. The reactive dyes called Apollocion Red 7EB, Apollofix Red SF-3B and Apollocion Red H-E3B showed the high initial adsorption rates as 0.06, 0.086 and 0.079 mg/g.min, respectively. A mixture of dyes containing azo and reactive dyes was adsorbed to the biomass of Pen. janthinellum and revealed that the initial adsorption rate was 0.084 mg/g.min. Both percent decolorization and the influence on the dye adsorption rate. Modified biomass of Pen. janthinellum was also investigated for the dye adsorption and the superior dye loading performance was observed compared with the ion-exchange/chelating resins used for removal of Apollocion Red 7EB.

  • To analyze the surface properties of bacteriophytochrome (BphP), five (2B8, 2C11, 3B2, 3D2, 3H7) anti-BphP monoclonal antibodies were produced by using full-length of BphP of Deinococcus radiodurnas. 2B8 and 2C11 preferentially recognized the epitopes at N-terminal region of BphP, whereas 3B2, 3D2 and 3H7 showed preferential affinities to the epitopes of C-terminal region of BphP.

  • The global minimum structures of the benzene-water, Bz-$H_2O$ and benzene-water cation complex, [Bz-$H_2O]^+$ have been investigated using ab initio and density functional theory(DFT) with very large basis sets. The highest levels of theory employed in this study are B3LYP/cc-pVQZ for geometry optimization and MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ for binding energy. The harmonic vibrational frequencies and IR intensities are also determined at the various levels of theory to confirm whether the structure of water complex is affected by the presence of benzene. The binding energies of Bz-$H_2O$ (N-1) structure are predicted to be 3.92 kcal/mol ($D_e$) and 3.11 kcal/mol ($D_0$) after the zero-point vibrational energy correction at the MP2/cc-pVQZ//B3LYP/cc-pVQZ level of theory. The binding energies of [Bz-$H_2O]^+$ (C-1) structure are predicted to be 9.06 kcal/mol for $D_e$ and 7.82 kcal/mol for $D_0$ at the same level of theory.

  • In this study, the effectiveness of overflow improvement of weir was tested by conducting hydraulic experiments at the designated spot for installment of side weir under the condition of installment of hydraulic structures such as small reservoir in mainstream. The height of the reservoir was set up as a third of that of the weir, accordingly the rate of the height of the weir and the distance of the reservoir from the weir($B_h/L_b$) were 0.05, 0.025, 0.0167 each. As a result, overflows per unit width increased by 8.1%, 5.4% and 3.9% perspectively. A new discharge coefficient that adds $B_h/L_b$ as parameter to the existing discharge coefficient of trapezoidal broad crested side weir was suggested and the application of the new formula of discharge coefficient by comparing measured overflow with calculated overflow was identified.

  • An efficient procedure for the synthesis of 6,7-dichloro-5,8-phthalazinedione (4) was developed in 49% overall yield via chloroxidation of 5,8-diaminophthalazine (8). And a series of its derivatives, 7-pyridinium-5,8-phthalazinedione-6-oxide (9), 6-chloro-7-phenylamino-5,8-phthalazinedione (10), 6,6-dimethoxy-6H-2,3,6b,11-tetraazabenzo[a]fluoren-5-one (11a), and 6,6-diethoxy-6H-2,3,6b,11-tetraazabenzo[a]fluoren-5-one (11b) have been synthesized.

  • The regioselectivity in the nitrosation of seven N-methyl-N'-substituted phenylureas ($CH_3NHCONHC_6H_4-G$; G = H, p-CH$_3$, m-CH$_3$, m-CH$_3$O, p-F, m-F, m-Br) was examined using NaNO$_2$ and 4 different acids (diluted HCl, HCOOH, CH$_3$COOH, CF$_3$COOH). In all cases, the two regioisomeric products, N-nitroso-N-methyl-N'-substituted phenylureas (A) and N'-nitroso-N-methyl-N'-substituted phenylureas (B) were observed to be formed as major products and product ratios were determined by the integration of their methyl peaks in $^1$H-NMR. Electron donating substitutent(G) on phenyl of the ureas generally led to increase the ratio of B to A. The data have revealed that the relative sensitivity of the nitrosonium species (HONO, HCOONO, CH$_3$COONO, CF$_3$COONO) toward the change of electron density on nitrogen with phenyl substitutents are 1.00 : 0.93 : 0.78 : > ∼ 0.7.

  • Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD which is commonly called as Bisroot strain is being used for functional foods through the treatment of long-term intestinal disorders, since the live strains in the form of active endospores can successfully reach the target intestine in humans. The cells of B. polyfermenticus SCD were treated for 4h in artificial gastric juice (pH 2.0,3.0) and bile acid. Final viability of the strain in artificial gastric Juice (pH 2.0, 3.0) is reached to 62.8% and 81.2% respectively B. polyfermenticus SCD is resistant to antibiotics such as streptomycin, rifampicin, nystatin and ampicilin. B. polyfermenticus SCD is well known supplies the nutrients by synthesizing vitamin $B_1$, $B_2$, C and K. B. polyfermenticus SCD produces various digestive enzymes and the enzymes enable to completely digest diets in our body. Above all, $\alpha$-amylase and pretense activities are very higher than B. subtilis KCTC 1020, about two fold and twenty five fold respectively. B. polyfermenticus SCD is very stable during long-term storage period in phosphate buffers of wide-range pH, solutions of various concentrations of sodium chloride, 5% glucose solution and water.
