Microstructure and Yield Asymmetry Behavior of Indirect-extruded Mg-Sn-Al-Zn Alloys (Mg-Sn-Al-Zn 마그네슘 합금 간접압출재의 미세조직 및 소성이방성)

  • Mg-(9-x)Sn-xAl-1Zn (x=1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.%) alloys were subjected to indirect extrusion, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-extruded Mg-Sn-Al-Zn (TAZ) alloys were investigated. The TAZ 811 alloy exhibited a finer grain structure than the TAZ 541 alloy due to a larger number of Mg2Sn particles, which pinned the grain boundaries and prevented growth of recrystallized grains. The TAZ alloys showed an unusual yield asymmetry behavior. The tension-compression yield asymmetry increased with decreasing average grain size. The TAZ 811 alloy with a small grain size exhibited a larger yield asymmetry than that of the TAZ 541 alloy having a relatively large grain size, which is mainly attributed to the low Al content and large number of second phase particles in the TAZ 811 alloy.

  • The effect of annealing on the magnetic properties and the microstructures of the amorphous $Fe_{76-x}Cu_1Mo_xSi_{14}B_9$(x=2,3) alloys were investigated. When annealed at 500${^{\circ}C}$ for 1hr, $8{\sim}9{\times}10^3$ of the effective permeability and 3~4 A/m of the coercive force were achieved upon crystallization to $\alpha$-Fe phase. And the average diameter of the $\alpha$-Fe grains was about 20nm. For the nanovrystalline ferromagnets. the fine grain size is the important requirement to obtain a good soft magnetic property. In this work, in order to get the finer grain size of $\alpha$-Fe phase, two-step annealing treatment was given. That is, following the low-temperature at $400{^{\circ}C}$ for 1~3hr, the high-temperature annealing at $500{^{\circ}C}$ for 1hr was carried out. As the low-temperature annealing time increased, the effective permeability increased to $1.2{\sim}1.7{\times}10^4$ and the coercive force decreased to about 2 A/m. And the grain size was observed to be smaller than 10nm. The increased permeability and the decreased coercive force were attributed to the reduced average crystalline anisotropy by the refinement of $\alpha$-Fe(Si) grains.

  • The microstructure and electrical characteristics of A ∼ C's ZnO varistors fabricated according to variable sintering condition, which sintering temperature was 1130 $^{\circ}C$ and speeds of pusher were A: 2 mm/min, B: 4 mm/min, C: 6 mm/min, respectively, were investigated. The experimental results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: The sintering density of A ∼C's ZnO varistors sintered at 1130 $^{\circ}C$ were decreased by sintering keep time to shorten, such as A: 9hour, B: 4.5hour and C: 3hour. A's ZnO varistor exhibited good densification nearly 98 % of theory density. In the microstructure, A∼C's ZnO varistors fabricated variable sintering condition was consisted of ZnO grain(ZnO), spinel phase(Z $n_{2.33}$S $b_{0.67}$ $O_4$), Bi-rich phasc(B $i_2$ $O_3$), wholly. Effect of Variety and Stage of Maturity on Nutritive Value of Whole Crop Rice Silage for Ruminants: In situ Dry Matter and Nitrogen Degradability and Estimation of Metabolizable Energy and Metabolizable Protein

  • The effect of eight varieties of whole crop rice silage (WCRS) harvested at four stages of maturity were investigated for in situ DM and N degradability, ME and MP yield and content in an 8${\times}$4 factorial experiment. The varieties were Akichikara, Fukuhibiki, Habataki, Hamasari, Hokuriku 168, Kusanami, Tamakei 96 and Yumetoiro. Hamasari and Kusanami were forage varieties while all others were grain varieties. Forages were harvested on 10, 22, 34 and 45 days after flowering, ensiled and kept in airtight condition. Between 45 and 49 days after ensiling, silages opened, chopped and milled green to pass through 4 mm screen. Samples were incubated in the rumen of two Holstein steers for 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h over eight 4 d periods. Bags at 0 h were washed in a washing machine. Variety affected DM (p<0.001: except 'a+b', p<0.01) and N (p<0.001) degradability characteristics of WCRS. Stages of maturity also affected DM (p<0.001: except 'a+b', p<0.05; 'c', p<0.08) and N (p<0.01: except 'c', p<0.05) degradability characteristics of WCRS. Interactions between variety and stages of maturity occurred in all DM (p<0.001) and N (p<0.001) degradability characteristics except (p>0.05) for DM 'b', DM 'c', DM 'a+b' nd N 'c'. Effective DM degradability was higher in grain varieties than forage varieties and degradability increased with maturity. N availability decreased only slightly with maturity. Variety was the key factor for N degradability characteristics of WCRS since variety accounted for most of the total variation for degradability characteristics. Both ME and MP content and yield were higher (p<0.001) in grain varieties, and they increased (p<0.001) with the maturity. The results clearly demonstrated that the grain type varieties contained higher ME and MP content than forage varieties, and increase in maturity increases both ME and MP content of WCRS.

  • Dielectric properties at microwave frequencies of ($Zr_{0.65}$, $Sn_{0.35}$) $Ti_{1.04}$ $O_{4.04}$ ceramics with additives, NiO as an agent to improve dielectric properties and $B_{2}$ $O_{3}$ as a firing agent were investigated. When 0.5 - 1.5 wt% of NiO is add, the grain growth is inhibited and the shape of the grain is uniformed, Dielectric constant(Fr) and bulk density are increased with raising amount of NiO at sintering temperature of 1330 - 1360.deg. C, but the temperature coefficient of resonant frquency(.epsilon.$_{r}$) decreased gradually as the NiO content increased. The value of Qx $f_{o}$ was increased as the amount of NiO was increased in the range of 0.5 to 1.0 wt% and the Qx $f_{o}$, was decreased slightly with raising sintering temperature. With NiO of 1.0 wt% and at sintering temperature of 1360.deg. C, this ceramics was found to have excellent microwave properties of .epsilon.$_{r}$=37.8, Qx $f_{o}$ = 48.600 and .tau.$_{f}$ = 7 ppm/.deg. C.C.. C.. C.C.. C.. C.

Magnetic Properties of $\alpha$-Fe Based Nd-Fe-B Nanocrystalline with High Remanence (고잔류자화 $\alpha$-Fe기 Nd-Fe-B 초미세결정립 합금의 자기특성)

  • The effects of Nb and Cu additives as will as substitutional Co into $Nd_{4}Fe_{85.5}B_{10.5}$ melt-spun alloy were studied aiming for finding a $\alpha$-Fe based Nd-Fe-B composite alloys with high energy product. The addition of Nb and Cu to $Nd_{4}Fe_{85.5}B_{10.5}$ decreased the average grain size and increased the coercivity up to 207kA/m(2.6kOe), Further-more, the substitution of Co for Fe in $Nd_{4}Fe_{82}B_{10}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloy resulted in the decrease of the average grain size (<20nm) and improved the hard magnetic properties. The remanence, coercivity and energy product of optimally annealed $Nd_{4}Fe_{74}Co_{8}B_{10}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloy were 1.345, 219kA/m(2.75kOe) and $95.5kJ/m^{3}$(12MGOe), respectively.

  • [ $B_4C$ ] ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering process and their sintering behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties were evaluated. Relative density of $B_4C$ ceramics could be achieved by spark plasma sintering method reached as high as 99% at lower temperature than conventional sintering method, in addition, without any sintering additives. The mechanical properties of $B_4C$ ceramics could be improved by the heat treatment at $1300^{\circ}C$ during sintering process which can be removed $B_2O_3$ phase from a $B_4C$ powder surface. This improvement results from the formation of a fine and homogeneous microstructure because the grain coarsening was suppressed by the elimination of $B_2O_3$ phase. Particularly, mechanical properties of the specimen experienced the $B_2O_3$ removing process improved over 30% compared with the specimen without that process.

  • In this study, the effect of solution treatment temperature on the tensile property in intermediate thermo-mechanical treated Al-Li alloys are investigated. After the intermediate thermo-mechanical treated Al-Li, Al-Li-Mg and Al-Li-Mg-Zr alloys were solution treated at various temperatures (500, 520 and $540^{\circ}C$), these were aged at $190^{\circ}C$, $240^{\circ}C$ and tested tensile properties. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; 1) The optimum solution heat-treatment temperature is $540^{\circ}C$ for a Al-Li alloy, and the recrystallized grain size is about $70{\mu}m$. 2) The optimum solution heat-treatment temperature is $500^{\circ}C$ for a Al-Li-Mg alloy, and the recrystallized grain size is the most coarse in all alloys. 3) The tensile property is independent of the solution treatment temperature in a Al-Li-Mg-Zr alloy, and the recrystallized grain size is the finest owing to addition of Zr.

  • HDDR treated anisotropic Nd-Fe-B powders have been widely used, due to their excellent magnetic properties, especially for sheet motors and sunroof motors of hybrid and electric vehicles. Final microstructure and coercivity of such Nd-Fe-B powders depend on the state of starting mother alloys, so additional homogenization treatment is required for improving magnetic properties of them. In this study, a homogenization treatment was performed at $900\sim1140^{\circ}C$ in order to control the grain size and Nd-rich phase distribution, and at the same time to improve coercivity of the HDDR treated magnetic powders. FE-SEM was used for observing grain size of the HDDR treated powder and EPMA was employed to observe distribution of Nd-rich phase. Magnetic properties were analyzed with a vibrating sample magnetometer.

  • Yield mapping is necessary for precision farming. An on-site rice weighing system for a head-feed combine was developed to measure the total weight of rice grain harvested while the combine was operated. A load cell system was used to monitor rice weights accumulated into the combine grain tank using a load cell. This method gave cumulative grain weight readings as a function of time. The system consisted of a load cell, two supporting brackets, and a computer-based data acquisition system. The weights measured with the system from two fields were compared with those obtained with a commercially available electronic balance. The response of the load cell to varying grain weights was linearly modeled, showing a coefficient of determination of 0.998 and a standard error of ${\pm}4.09kg$.
