Seven species and two varieties belonging to the genus Boehmeria Jacq. (Urticaceae) are known to be distributed in Korea. Among them, B. spicata, B. tricuspis, and B. tricuspis var. unicuspis were subjected to an external morphological study. Among the individuals believed to exhibit variations in the leaf shape, B. gracilis and B. silvestrii were newly recognized. Unlike related taxa, B. gracilis has middle leaves with an elliptic, broadly elliptic, ovate, or broadly depressed ovate shape, a regular and serrulate-dentate margin, and an unlobed and short caudate or cuspidate apex. Boehmeria silvestrii has middle leaves with 5-angled ovate, orbicular ovate or broadly ovate shapes, and 3- or 5-lobed and caudate apices. Therefore, we assigned the corresponding names 'Top-geo-buk-kko-ri' and 'Cham-geo-buk-kko-ri'. Meanwhile, the B. spicata complex (B. gracilis, B. silvestrii, B. spicata, and B. tricuspis var. unicuspis) is very closely related in terms of the morphological characters, whereas B. tricuspis exhibits no relationship. Furthermore, because the scientific name and type specimen of B. tricuspis var. unicuspis (Pul-geo-buk-kko-ri) are problematic, the correct name B. paraspicata Nakai and corresponding holotype are presented. Additionally, lectotypes of B. gracilis and B. silvestrii are newly designated here. A taxonomic treatment, descriptions, a key, photographs, type specimens, and leaf variation images of the B. spicata complex are provided in this study.
Korean Bryocoris species, B. gracilis and B. montanus, were reviewed. Of these, B. gracilis Linnavuori, 1962 is first reported in Korea and diagnosed, based on a single female specimen collected from Mount Hwangmaesan, Gyeongsangnam-do province. A key to the Korean species and photographs on external features are given.

Euglena gracilis is a microalga of great biotechnological interest that can create high levels of bioactive compounds, such as tocopherol, paramylon, and folic acid. The objective of this study was to investigate the biological activities of extracts from E. gracilis, especially those focused on immunological activity. E. gracilis biomass was extracted with hot water (HWE) and the remaining pellet was continuously extracted with methanol (HWME). First, we examined the effect of two extracts from E. gracilis on the production of nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of pro-inflammation cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. HWE treatment dose-dependently increased the production of IL-1β and TNF-α. On the other hand, treatment with HWME significantly decreased the generation of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophage cells. In addition, other biological activities of the extracts were further analyzed: α-glucosidase inhibition, protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP1B) inhibition, tyrosinase inhibition, xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition. Analysis of these biological activities showed that HWE has more inhibitory effects than HWME against α-glucosidase, tyrosinase, and XO agents. However, the inhibition of PTP1B and ACE with HWME were higher than with HWE. Taken together, the results suggested that E. gracilis possesses various biological activities―especially immunological capabilities―through regulation of cytokine production. Therefore, E. gracilis extract may be potentially useful for food material with immune-regulating effects.

In this study, the effects of the immune stimulator Euglena gracilis (Euglena) in cyclophosphamide (CCP)-induced immunocompromised mice were assessed. The key component β-1,3-glucan (paramylon) constitutes 50% of E. gracilis. Mice were orally administered Euglena powder (250 and 500 mg/kg body weight (B.W.)) or β-glucan powder (250 mg/kg B.W.) for 19 days. In a preliminary immunology experiment, ICR mice were intraperitoneally injected with 80 mg of CCP/kg B.W. during the final 3 consecutive days. In the main experiment, BALB/c mice were treated with CCP for the final 5 days. To evaluate the enhancing effects of Euglena on the immune system, mouse B.W., the spleen index, natural killer (NK) cell activity and mRNA expression in splenocytes lungs and livers were determined. To detect cytokine and receptor expression, splenocytes were treated with 5 ㎍/ml concanavalin A or 1 ㎍/ml lipopolysaccharide. The B.W. and spleen index were significantly increased and NK cell activity was slightly enhanced in all the experimental groups compared to the CCP-only group. In splenocytes, the gene expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-10, IL-6, and IL-12 receptor were increased in the E. gracilis and β-glucan groups compared to the CCP-only group, but there was no significant difference. Treatment with 500 mg of Euglena/kg B.W. significantly upregulated dectin-1 mRNA expression in the lung and liver compared to the CCP-only group. These results suggest that Euglena may enhance the immune system by strengthening innate immunity through immunosuppression.
The Ichthyofauna was investigated at the seven sites in Paikchon streams from August 1990 to March 1991. The collected fishes were classified to 22 species belong to 19 genera and 11 families, of which 5 species were tentatively identified as endemic species in Korea. Three species, Odontobutis obscurus interrupta, Luciogobius guttatus and Mactopodus chinensis, are collected for the first time in this area. Dominant species were Squalidus gracilis majimae(40.8%), Zacco temmincki(24.2%), Z. platypus(13.3%) and Cobitis koreensis pumilus(7.7%). Stomach contents of S. gracilis majimae were mainly taxa belong to Bacillariophyceae of micro-algee attached to sand or gravel.
The general characteristics of campylobacters and related organisms (e.g., species of the genera Helicobacter and Wolinella, Bacteroides ureolyticus, and Bacteroides gracilis) are as follows: slender, non-sporeforming, gram-negative, vibroid bacteria (helical- or spiral- shpaed; except that B. ureolyticus and B. gracilis are straight-rod), 0.2-0.5 .mu.m in width and 0.5 .mu.m in length. (Smibert, 1984; Penner, 1988). The species of genus Campylobacter and related organisms are chemoorganotrophs; however, they neither oxidize nor ferment carbohydrates and instead obtain energy from amino acids, the salts of tricarboxylic acids (TCA) cycle intermediates, the salts of organic acids, or, in some species, H$\_$2/. With regard to their oxygen responses for growth, they all are microaeophilic i.e., they are capable of oxygen-dependent growth (respiring with oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor) but can not grow in the presence of a level of oxygen equivalent to that present in an air atmosphere (21% oxygen). This review will take interests in how these microorganisms response to oxygen for growth and what repiratory types they have.

In this study we evaluated the immune-enhancing effects of β-glucan, the main component of Euglena gracilis (Euglena), and Euglena on inflammatory factor expression in RAW264.7 macrophages and ICR mice with cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. Macrophages were treated with β-glucan or Euglena for 48 h. The β-glucan and Euglena groups exhibited higher levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α than the control (vehicle alone) group. Animals were fed saline and β-glucan (400 mg/kg body weight (B.W.)) or Euglena (400 or 800 mg/kg B.W.) for 19 days, and on days 17-19, cyclophosphamide (CCP, 80 mg/kg B.W.) was administered to induce immunosuppression in the ICR mouse model. CCP reduced the body weight, spleen index, and cytokine expression of the mice. To measure cytokine and receptor expression, splenocytes were treated with concanavalin A (ConA) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a mitogen for 24 h. In vivo, ConA stimulation significantly upregulated the expression of interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-10, IL-12 receptor β1, IL-1β, and IL-2 in splenocytes from the β-glucan- or Euglena-treated groups compared with those in the splenocytes from the CCP-treated group; LPS stimulation increased the levels of the cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in splenocytes from the β-glucan- or Euglena- treated groups compared with those from the CCP-treated group, but most of these differences were not significant. These results demonstrate the effect of Euglena in ameliorating macrophages and immunosuppression in CCP-treated mice. Thus, Euglena has the potential to enhance macrophage- and splenocyte- mediated immune-stimulating responses.

This study is the result of examining the growth and survival rate of larva and spat when supplied with Enriched live food by adding $B_{12}$, chitosan, PSB, and polysaccharides to microalgae (Chaetoceros gracilis, Isochrysis galbana) to raise the survival rate of larva and spat during artificial clam seed production. Microalge (Chaetoceros gracilis, Isochrysis galbana) was strengthened for nutrition with $B_{12}$ 0.1 ppm, chitosan 0.2 ppm, PSB 3 ppm and polysaccharides 1 ppm and was daily supplied for $3{\times}10^3-15{\times}10^3Cells/mL$ and the growth and survival rates were measured. As the result of experiment, the growth of larva did not show much difference with PSB test section $199{\pm}0.59{\mu}m$, $B_{12}$ test section $198{\pm}0.64{\mu}m$, and chitosan $197{\pm}0.52{\mu}m$, survival rate was highest at PSB test section with 99.3%, followed by $B_{12}$ test section 95.9%, and chitosan 94.5%. Growth of early spat was the highest for PSB test section at $2.74{\pm}0.58mm$, followed by polysaccharides $2.67{\pm}0.55mm$, $B_{12}$$2.54{\pm}0.48mm$, and chitosan $2.49{\pm}0.51mm$, and the survival rate was the highest for PSB test group at 32.1%, followed by $B_{12}$ test section 31.6%, chitosan 28.5%, and polysacharrides 21.4%. From such results, PSB is found to be very effective with low-quality improvement when breeding early spat of clams, and especially for floor-type early spat breeding, it had the effect of suppressing protozoan and germs so that detailed studies from various perspectives should be conducted with various chemicals in the future.
The fish species and groups were investigated at the four streams in Goseong from September 2011 to August 2012. During the survey period, 17 species from Goseong stream, 18 species from Maam stream, 20 species from Guman stream, and 15 species from Baedun stream of fish were collected. Four creek downstreams were classified into 2 groups which were categorized by the effects of seawater. Group A is Guman and Maam streams with no estuary barrage, with the exchange of freshwater and seawater. On the other hand, group B is Goseong and Beadun streams which was blocked by the estuary barrage and submerged weir. The former group was mainly consisted of peripheral freshwater fish species such as Tridentiger brevispinis, Gymnogobius castaneus, Mugli cephalus, and Acanthogobius flavimanus. The latter one was composed of primary freshwater fish species such as Zacco koreanus, Squalidus gracilis majimae, and Pseudorasbora parva. These results suggest that estuary barrage and submerged weir in the stream could change the natural flow of seawater and freshwater, resulting in change of fish species and groups.
The immunomodulatory effects of Euglena gracilis (Euglena) and its bioactive component, β-1,3-glucan (paramylon), have been clarified through various studies. However, the detailed mechanisms of the immune regulation remain to be elucidated. This study was designed not only to investigate the immunomodulatory effects but also to determine the genetic mechanisms of Euglena and β-glucan in cyclophosphamide (CCP)-induced immunosuppressed mice. The animals were orally administered saline, Euglena (800 mg/kg B.W.) or β-glucan (400 mg/kg B.W.) for 19 days, and CCP (80 mg/kg B.W.) was subsequently administered to induce immunosuppression in the mice. The mice exhibited significant decreases in body weight, organ weight, and the spleen index. However, there were significant improvements in the spleen weight and the spleen index in CCP-induced mice after the oral administration of Euglena and β-glucan. Transcriptome analysis of the splenocytes revealed immune-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) regulated in the Euglena- and β-glucantreated groups. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses indicated that pathways related with interleukin (IL)-17 and cAMP play significant roles in regulating T cells, B cells, and inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, Ptgs2, a major inflammatory factor, was exclusively expressed in the Euglena-treated group, suggesting that Euglena's beneficial components, such as carotenoids, could regulate these genes by influencing immune lymphocytes and inflammatory cytokines in CCP-induced mice. This study validated the immunomodulatory effects of Euglena and highlighted its underlying mechanisms, suggesting a positive contribution to the determination of phenotypes associated with immune-related diseases and the research and development of immunotherapies.
