Folic acid, one of the B group of vitamins, is an essential substance for maintaining the functions of the nervous system, and is also known to decrease the level of homocysteine in plasma. Homocysteine influences the lowering of the cognitive function in humans, and especially in elderly people. In order to determine the strains with a strong capacity to produce folic acid, 190 bacteria were isolated from various kinds of jeotgal and chungkuk-jang. In our test experiment, JA71 was found to contain $9.03{\mu}g/mL$ of folic acid after 24 h of incubation in an MRS broth. This showed that JA71 has the highest folic acid production ability compared to the other lactic acid bacteria that were isolated. JA71 was identified as Lactobacillus plantarum by the result of API carbohydrate fermentation pattern and 16s rDNA sequence. JA71 was investigated for its physiological characteristics. The optimum growth temperature of JA71 was $37^{\circ}C$, and the cultures took 12 h to reach pH 4.4. JA71 proved more sensitive to bacitracin when compared with fifteen different antibiotics, and showed most resistance to neomycin and vancomycin. Moreover, it was comparatively tolerant of bile juice and acid, and displayed resistance to Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus with restraint rates of 60.4%, 96.7%, and 76.2%, respectively. These results demonstrate that JA71 could be an excellent strain for application to functional products.
1) The general composition, vitamin, amino acid, digestibility and nutrition efficiency of the seeds of Pinus Koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc. were examined. (2) Pine tree seed contains approximately 17% or more protein nearly pure one. The amino acid composition of the protein was analyzed. When compared with the values of soybean and peanut reported in the literature, it contains slightly mare histidine and glycine etc., showing that the seeds are of high nutritional value. (3) The protein digestibility was 87% and the total content of digestible protein was approximately 14.9%, T.D.N. was 159.4%, proving itself excellent. (4) As to vitamins, it was found out that the seeds contain 275 r of $B_1$ and 99 r. As to minerals, Ca (301.2 mg) P (361 mg) and K (272 mg) were found to be contained in the seeds (5) The basic diet was considered nearly perfect from the view-point of nutrition, and to this were added 30%, 5% and 10% of the test sample respectively and were fed to albino rats. Among the three treatment, the 3% sample adding proved to be the mast effective one, showing the most efficient growth. Thus it can be presumed that the pine tree seeds certainly contain U.G.F. (6) The anatomical examination of the intestines of albino rats showed that the feeding of pine tree seeds bad favorable effect on the development of heart, kidney and pancreas.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Physical exercise promotes energy producing pathways requiring thiamin and riboflavin as a coenzyme. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of regular exercise training on urinary excretion of thiamin and riboflavin. MATERIALS/METHODS: Fifty rats were randomly assigned to one of two groups: non-exercise training (NT, n = 25) and regular exercise training (ET, n = 25) for 5 weeks. The rats performed moderate exercise on a treadmill (0.5-0.8 km/hour) for 30 min/day, 5 days/week. Twenty-four hour urine samples were collected at the end of the 0 week, $3^{rd}$ week, and $5^{th}$ week of training and thiamin and riboflavin were analyzed. RESULTS: No significant differences in thiamin and riboflavin intakes for each week were observed between the NT and ET groups. Urinary thiamin excretion of each group was the highest at the $5^{th}$ week compared to the levels at 0 and $3^{rd}$ week. Urinary thiamin at the $5^{th}$ week was significantly lower in the ET group than in the NT group. Urinary riboflavin excretion was increased by training duration, however, no difference was observed between NT and ET for each week. At 0 and $3^{rd}$ week, no significant relationships were observed between dietary intake and urinary excretion of thiamin and riboflavin, however, at the $5^{th}$ week, urinary excretion was significantly increased by dietary intake only in the NT group (P < 0.05). Thiamin excretion of both NT and ET groups was significantly increased with riboflavin excretion at the $5^{th}$ week (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Regular moderate exercise training increased urinary excretion of thiamin. Dietary intakes and urinary excretions of thiamin and riboflavin showed positive correlation in both the exercise training and non-exercise training groups as the exercise training period went by, while the correlations in the exercise training group were weaker than those in the non-exercise training group. Therefore, regular exercise training can alter the urinary excretion of thiamin and riboflavin in rats.
Background: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSHL) has been generally defined as an abrupt loss of auditory acuity without precipitating factors. Since ISSHL was first described as a disease entity, numerous reports assessing a variety of treatment regimens have been published. But its etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, and prognosis are controversial at the present time. Stellate ganglion block(SGB) has been used for the treatment of ISSHL by vasodilatation and increased blood flow to the inner ear. Methods: We reviewed the records of 152 patients to investigate the efficacy of SGB for ISSHL. The control group was managed with medications such as hypaque, heparin, steroid, nicotinic acid, and vitamins. The SGB group was managed with SGB and the same medications. SGB was performed with 8 ml of 1.0% mepivacaine. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated by pure-tone average following therapy. The recovery of hearing was defined as Siegel's criteria I, II, or III. Results: The recovery rate of the SGB group was higher than that of the control group(61.5 vs. 42.9%, p<0.05). The recovery rate was higher in patients who were treated early, within 7 days from the onset of symptoms, especially in the SGB group(79.7%). And in the case that initial hearing loss was severe (>70dB), the SGB group had a higher recovery rate(64.2%) than the control group(42.5%). Conclusions: SGB is thought to be a useful therapy for ISSHL, especially in the patients who were treated soon after onset or whose initial hearing loss was severe.
Contributions of specific foods to absolute intake and between-person variance in 13 nutrients were examined to develop a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for the Korean elderly using dietary data collected by a semiquantitative FFQ with 96 food items. The contributions of specific foods to 90% absolute nutrient intake were measured by assessing their percentage to the total consumption of a nutrient by our samples(n=98). To assess the contribution of the foods to the between-person variance in intake of each specific nutrient, stepwise multiple regression was performed. Cumulative R2 served as the measure of contribution to variation in intake. The most important food source of absolute intake was rice for energy and protein. Important foods of between person variance contribution include bread for energy and pork for protein. Important foods of absolute and variance contribution of nutrient intake were similar for fat(noodles including jajangmyun and kalguksu), calcium(anchovy and milk) and vitamin A (carrot). The number of foods necessary to account for the variation in nutrient intake among older people in Korea differ considerably by nutrient: 18 - 43 and 8-26 foods were accounted for the respective 90 and 80% of absolute intake depending on nutrients. Carbohydrates and vitamin A and C had relatively a few major sources, thus may be assessed well by a small number of foods. Conversely, iron, potassium and B vitamins appear to need longer lists of foods. Fewer numbeer (6 - 12 and 4 - 9) of foods were required for the corresponding percentages of between-person variation for all nutrients. Depending on nutrients, 0.980-0.995 and 0.924-0.987 were respective correlation coefficients of nutrient intakes measured by 96 food items with those by lists of foods for 90% and 80% of absolute intake contribution. These findings suggest that an incomplete food list on the basis of its contribution to absolute and between person variation intakes may still be effective in discriminating among individuals. The results of this study may be useful in the design and use of dietary questionnaire.
The function of the liver is so complicated and important that various Hepatic diseases are occured due to functional retardation of liver. Above all, the incidence of Hepatitis and liver cirrhosis among Koreans has shown an increasing tendency recently. 113 cases of Hepatitis and 125 cases of liver cirrhosis which had been admitted, more than 10 days, to KOREA Hospital between November, 1968 and July,1972, were studied through clinic charts. This project was conducted to development several camellia tea mixed herb teas having any physiological effects. Leaves of tea tree contain many compounds, such as polysaccharides, volatile oils, vitamins, minerals, purines, alkaloids(eg. caffeine) and polyphenols(catechins and flavonoids). Although all three tea types(green, oolonr and black) have antibacterial and free radical capturing(antioxidizing) activities, the efficacy decreases substantially the darker the variety of tea is. This is due to lower contents of anti-oxidizing polyphenols remaining in the leaves. Unlike tea tree(Camellia sinensis), the biochemical features and effects of camellia(Camellia japonica) are not well known. Fresh mature leaf of sasanqua camellia(C. sasanqua), roasted young leaf tea(C. japonica) and fresh mature leaf and bark of camellia had high antibacterial activity against P. vulgaris and B. subtilis. In antifungal activity bioassay, young leaf roasted teas of camellia and sasanqua camellia had high activity against C. albicans and T. beigelil. Plant extracts from Camelia japonica had higher inhibitory activity against fungi than against bacteria. In cytotoxic effect against human acute myelogenous leukaemia cell extracts including fresh leaf(200$\mu\textrm{g}$/m1), bark(230$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) and flower tea (320$\mu\textrm{g}$/m1)inhibited growth of AML cells.(중략)
In this study, as preliminary research for the development of natural estrogen supplement the chemical properties of Iranian black pomegranate juice concentrate and seeds were evaluated. Proximate compositions of pomegranate juice concentrate and seeds were as follows; crude lipid 0.4% and 8.2%, moisture 39.9% and 6.6%, crude protein 0.9% and 12.2%, ash 1.4% and 1.7%, and carbohydrate 42.0% and 84.5% respectively. Major amino acids are glutamic acid (1310.0ppm) and aspartic acid (896.2ppm) in juice concentrate, and glycine (611.1ppm) and arginin (401.6ppm) in seeds. Ascorbic acid has the highest concentration of 20.0mg/l00g in juice concentrate and 0.23mg/l00 in seeds. The compositions of unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid and linolenic acid were higher than those of saturated fatty acids such as stearic palmitic acid. Major minerals were potassium, calcium and sodium, potassium was highest in both juice concentrate and seeds. Vitamins were composed of ascorbic acid (20.0mg/l00g), vitamin B$_1$(0.12mg/100g) and niacin (0.80mg/l00g) in juice concentrate, and only ascorbic acid(0.23mg/l00g) in seeds. Organic acids such as citric and L-malic acid were detected only in pomegranate juice concentrate. The contents of total polyphenols were 4.55g/L in juice concentrate and 3.5mg/l00g in seeds, respectively. Phytoestrogens detected in pomegranate juice concentrate and seeds were daidzein, quercetin, genistein and 17 $\beta$-estradiol.
This study investigated the effects of astaxanthin, which is used to improve the muscle color of fish, on the nutritional composition of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The trout were fed extruded pellets containing astaxanthin (pigmented rainbow trout) or without astaxanthin (non-pigmented rainbow trout). No significant differences in the contents of crude protein and crude ash between the two muscles of the two groups were observed. However, the crude fat composition of the muscle of pigmented rainbow trout was about two times higher than that of control muscle. In the muscle of pigmented rainbow trout, the contents of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), which are functional polyunsaturated fatty acids, were 1.6 fold higher than in non-pigmented muscle. In addition, the contents of minerals such as Zn and Fe, vitamins (B group, C, and E), free amino acids, carotenoids and astaxanthin were increased in the muscle of rainbow trout fed pellets supplemented with astaxanthin. Specifically, the content of the bioactive compound astaxanthin, was increased six times in the pigmented muscle, as compared to the control muscle. The results suggest that a diet supplemented with astaxanthin improves the nutritional composition of rainbow trout muscle as well as improving the muscle color.
Cultural conditions for $\alpha$-D-Glucosidase Inhibitor production from Streptomyces sp. YS-221-B isolated from soil arid identified as Streptomyces flauovirens or a subspecies of it were investigated. When the strain was cultured in a flask containing 2% glucose, 0.3% asparagine, 0.0002% riboflavin, 0.05% $K_2$HPO$_4$, 0.1% MgSO$_4$.7$H_2O$, 0.05% NaCl, pH 8.0 at 3$0^{\circ}C$, maximum production of the inhibitor was obtained after 8-9 days of cultivation. Sugar alcohols such as mannitol, i-inositol, erythritol as carbon sources, asparagine and beef extract as nitrogen sources were favorable for inhibitor production. Among vitamins, riboflavin, p-aminobenzoic acid, pyridoxamine and folic acid promoted the production of inhibitor, but depressed by the addition of hesperidine, and also depressed by cobalt, lithium and ferrous salts.
