An azimuth propeller can generate thrust in all directions by rotating its housing with an electric motor. An azimuth propeller can be operated using several methods to stop a ship. This study aims to derive an efficient method to stop a ship safely using an azimuth propeller through full-scale maneuvering trials with the research vessel "NARA" of Pukyong National University in 4.63 m/s (9 kts). Five methods with different azimuth propeller operations were tested to stop the ship. The test results confirmed that the simultaneous use of the thrust and the hydrodynamic force acting on the strut is the most effective method to stop the ship.
Recently, the application of the electric propulsion system becomes popular because of its advantage over conventional propulsion. However, the complicated flow mechanism and interaction around the azimuth thruster are not fully understood yet, and the studies on the powering performance characteristics with azimuth/pod thrusters are now in progress. The experimental method developed in KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering) is introduced and the results of the powering performance tests, consisting of resistance, self-propulsion and propeller open water tests for a cable layer with two azimuth thrusters are presented. For the analysis of powering performance with azimuth thrusters, it is necessary to evaluate the thrust/drag for components of a thruster unit, Extrapolation results could differ according to the various definitions of the propulsion unit; that is the pod, thruster leg and/or nozzle can be treated as hull appendages or as part of propulsion unit, The powering performances based on several definitions are investigated for this vessel. The results of the measurements for the 3-dimensional velocity distribution on the propeller plane are presented to understand the basis of the difference in propulsion characteristics due to the propeller rotational directions.
Recent, The propeller had high performance according as high performance of small ship. So, We has the development for azimuth thrusters. This Paper has structure improvement of steering support flange in azimuth thrusters. Steering support flange is very important part. because, Steering support flange supports all weight of azimuth thrusters. We has static & dynamic analysis of Steering support flange, and we discover the very safety. So, We has optimum design for the cost reduction. The first method of optimum design, We has the thickness reduce to 30mm from 5mm. Next method of optimum design, We had added stiffener. And we has the structure & dynamic behavior analysis. We had to dynamic behavior analysis. The first, We had to modal analysis. The result of 1st-modal analysis is that original model had to 76.48hz and new model had to 200.9hz. The second, We had to harmonic analysis. The result, We gave the thrust power to steering support flange. and We had to frequency analysis to $0{\sim}500hz$. The result, Deflection ration reduce to 16.64.
In this study, CFD analysis was conducted to compare the aerodynamic performance of the isolated propeller and pusher propeller, which is affected by the wake of wide fuselage. The moving reference frame (MRF) method was used for isolated propeller analysis, while the MRF and sliding mesh method were used sequentially for the pusher propeller to analyze the change in the aerodynamic characteristics based on the azimuth angle. Under the same torque condition, the thrust of the pusher propeller was greater than that of the isolated propeller. Thrust increment of the pusher propeller was mainly generated near the root of the blade where the fuselage wake was concentrated. The net efficiency of the pusher propeller was greater than or equal to that of the isolated propeller. Because of the flat fuselage shape, thrust and torque of the pusher propeller periodically changed with the rotation of the propeller.

A type of electric propulsion employed by specialized purpose vessels or offshore is the azimuth thruster. Azimuth thruster application had been increasing recently and resulted to excellent vessel maneuverability. However, this system is very complex and some of its major component being exposed under the seawater level presents difficulty in sealing design. For Polar class icebreaker operating in extreme sea condition, this requires a high level of reliability and safety. In this study, the characteristics of lubricating orifice pipe structural vibration installed at the lower reduction gear were investigated and analyzed through beam analysis theory and comparison of experiments. Propeller excitation and the resonant modes of vibration causing excessive vibration and suitable countermeasures to prevent damage due to vibration fatigue on the pipe are presented.

This paper shows the result of development about the revolution system of azimuth thruster which of power is less than 250kW for small ship. Advanced Azimuth revolution system can revolve propeller and rudder from 360 degree so that this system for vessel maneuvering can be excellent of propulsion effectively. Fluid power control system for azimuth thruster is designed with PID control system by using CEMTool/SIMTool program. And the actuator used for servo valve can control rudder angle, pressure and direction. The first, We had a test for the angle control of revolution system. The result of angle control confirmed that it has the good efficiency from experiment result of time input degree $30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$. The second, We had to a test for the pressure characteristic of hydraulic motor. As a result, We confirmed the maximum pressure 3.5MPa and steady state 0.7MPa nom experiment result of time input degree $30^{\circ}$. In this paper, it is identified the pressure characteristic of hydraulic motor and angle control for azimuth thruster by AMESim, and it has been confirmed the usefulness of AMEsim modeling was verified by comparison between AMESim simulation results and experiments results.

In this study, we conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for the unsteady hydrodynamic interaction of multiple thrusters by solving Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A commercial CFD software, STAR-CCM+ was used for all simulations by employing a ducted thruster model with combination of a propeller and No. 19a duct. A sliding mesh technique was used to treat dynamic motion of propeller rotation and non-conformal hexahedral grid system was considered. Four different combinations in tilting and azimuth angles of the thrusters were considered to investigate the effects on the propulsion performance. We could find that thruster-hull and thruster-thruster interactions has significant effect on propulsion performance and further study will be required for the optimal configurations with the best tilting and relative azimuth angle between thrusters.

In this study, a numerical analysis was performed on 26 inch single and coaxial propeller using the ANSYS Fluent 19.0 Solver to analyse the effect of the distance between coaxial propellers as one of the design parameter. The Moving Reference Frame (MRF) method was used for single propeller, while the sliding mesh method was used for a coaxial propeller to analyse the flow field varying with azimuth angle. The thrust and power are decreased as the upper and lower propeller approaching each other. As H/D is increased, interference between the propellers is decreased. According to the flow field variable contour of the coaxial propeller, it appears that the change in aerodynamic performance is due to the loading effect and the tip vortex wake effect.
Helicopter dynamics are plenty of nonlinearity. A complete mathematical model including propeller dynamics and fortes generated by the propellers is very difficult to obtain. So the method used to design to design a controller is a parameter estimation. Design controller based on variable structure system. This paper deals with LQR control technique to control efficiently, its elevation angle and azimuth one. The purpose of the experiment is to design a controller allows to use a desired elevation angle and azimuth ones. The system model has a helicopter model with 2-degree-of freedom. The simulation results were verified usefulness of controller.

Present paper shows the basic design procedure for platform support vessel operating in open sea, and hull form development process. General design concept considering the operating mission, operating sea condition and shipping freight, etc. is explained shortly. For the hull form design, the initial hull form was designed based on the reference PSVs. The resistance and propulsion test results for the initial hull form with twin Azimuth thruster were analyzed and a few items for improvement were derived. At the next stage, main parameters including Length, Cp-curve, Cb, Lcb, etc. were changed totally for the hull form improvement. Furthermore, 3 different bulbous bows for the fore-body design to reduce the wave resistance and after-body design to reduce the residual resistance were carried out. The best hull form among the 3 fore-bodies with same after-body was selected through the comparison of wave resistance calculation results. Twin ducted Azimuth thruster with the smaller propeller diameter than the former were adapted to increase the propulsive efficiency. The final hull form with the twin Azimuth thruster was evaluated to satisfy more than the target design speed 14 knots in sea condition with sea margin 15% at the 5,000kW BHP through the model test in KRISO.
