The ignition characteristics in a confined axisymmetric coflow $CH_4$ jet were investigated numerically with the Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS). The $CH_4$ fuel stream was diluted with main combustion product gases, such as $O_2$, $N_2$, CO, $CO_2$, and $H_2O$, and the mixed fuel stream was heated up to the sufficient temperature where a supplying fuel stream can be ignited. For the calculation of chemical reaction in the simulation, a 2-step global finite chemistry model was considered. Boundary condition for confined wall was optimized by investigating the effects of wall temperature on the ignition characteristics of fuel stream. In addition, the effects of composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature on the ignition of fuel steam were investigated. The ignition characteristics of $CH_4$ stream with diluents were very sensitive to the wall temperature, composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature.
This Paper deals with the experimental study of the axisymmetric air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface with and without swirl. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of flow, augmentation of heat transfer rate, turbulent intensity, and the comparison of heat transfer rate, the optimal swirling condition about the swirl and nonswirl axisymmetric air jet. In order to augment the heat transfer on the flat heating surface without introducing any additional power, the technique used in the present work was placement of twisted tape inserted pipe in front of the nozzle exit in order to make a swirl. The effect of swirl degree is investigated in case of S=0., 0.056, 0.111, 0.222 and the velocity of the jet was 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44m/s. The distance between the nozle exit and the stagnation point on the impinging plate was the H/D=$1{\sim}14$. In order to analyze of the flow structure which increase heat transfer, the velocity and the turbulent intensity of the axisymmetric jet was measured by a hot wire anemometer according to the swirl number and H/D.

Supersonic, axisymmetric, jets issuing from several kinds of dual, coaxial, nozzles were experimentally investigated. Four different kinds of coaxial, dual nozzles were employed to characterize the major. features of the supersonic, coaxial, dual jets. Two convergent-divergent supersonic nozzles with different impinging angle on the jet axis of were designed to have the Mach number 2.0 and used to compare the coaxial jet flows with those discharging from two sonic nozzles. The primary pressure ratio was changed in the range from 4.0 to 10.0 and the assistant jet ratio from 1.0 to 4.0. The results obtained show that the assistant jets from the annular. nozzle affect the coaxial jet flows and an increase of both the primary jet pressure ratio and assistant jet pressure ratio lead to a longer supersonic length of the dual, coaxial jet.

Supersonic coaxial jets are investigated numerically by using the axisymmetric, Wavier-Stokes equations which are solved using a fully implicit finite volume method. Three different kinds of coaxial nozzles are employed to understand the flow physics involved in the supersonic coaxial jets. Two convergent-divergent supersonic nozzles are designed to have the same Mach number 2.0, and used to compare the coaxial jet flows with those discharging from one constant-area nozzle. The impingement angle of the annular jets are varied. The primary pressure ratio is changed in the range from 2.0 to 10.0 and the assistant jet ratio from 1.0 to 3.0. The results obtained show that the fluctuations of the total pressure and Mach number along the jet axis are much higher in the constant-area nozzle than those in the convergent-divergent nozzles, and the constant-area nozzle lead to higher total pressure losses, compared with the convergent-divergent nozzles. The assistant jets from the annular nozzle affect the coaxial jet flows within the distance less than about ten times the nozzle throat diameter, but beyond it the coaxial jet is conical with self-similar velocity profiles. Increasing both the primary jet pressure ratio and the assistant jet pressure ratio produces a longer coaxial jet core.
An axisymmetric Navier-Stokes procedure has been developed to analyze the pulse jet flow in a ceramic filter unit for the dust dislodging process. Using Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model as a closure relationship, the SIAF(Scalar Implicit Approximate Factorization) algorithm together with the ${\delta}^k-Correction$ iterative time marching scheme is adopted to solve the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations. After some validation tests, the code has been applied to solve the pulse jet flow and examine the effects of geometry and reservoir pressure condition on the pressure level inside the filter unit. To avoid dealing with the uncertainty of such factors as the cohesion of the collected dust and the adhesion of the dust to the medium and also to simplify the analysis, the filter wall is assumed to be impermeable. The results for various test cases are presented.
The present study addresses the flow characteristics involved in the self-induced oscillations of the underexpanded jet impinging upon a cylindrical body. Both experiment and computational analysis are carried out to elucidate the shock motions of the self-induced oscillations and to find the associated major flow factors. The underexpanded sonic jet is made from a nozzle and a cylindrical body is placed downstream to simulate the impinging jet upon an obstacle. The computational analysis using TVD scheme is applied to solve the axisymmetric, unsteady, inviscid governing equations. A Schlieren system is employed to visualize the self-induced oscillations generated in flow field. The data of the shock motions are obtained from a high-speed video system. The detailed characteristics of the Mach disk oscillations and the resulting pressure variations are expatiated using the time dependent data of the Mach disk positions. The mechanisms of the self-induced oscillations are discussed in details based upon the experimental and computational results.
The mear field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distributions is investigated experimentally. Experiments are carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements are undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distributions of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stresses. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend upstream of the exit. There pipes used here include a straight pipe, and 90 and 160 degree-bend pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the upstream of the pipe exit, secondary flow through the bend mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes. The jets into the atmosphere have two levels of initial velocity skewness in addition to an axisymmetric jet from a straight pipe. In case of the curved pipe, a six diameter-long straight pipe section follows the bend upstream of the exit. The Reynolds number based on the exit bulk velocity is 13,400. The results indicate that the near field structure is considerably modified by the skewness of an initial mean velocity distribution. As the skewness increases, the decay rate of mean velocity at the centerline also increases.

Experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of pulsations on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of an axisymmetric impinging jet on a flat plate heated by using a gold coated aim. Vertex motion in the impinging jet is visualized using a fog generator, and a thermochromatic liquid crystal (TLC) technique is used to measure the time averaged local temperature distributions on the impingement plate. In addition, the quantitative data for mean velocity and turbulence intensity are obtained employing hot-wire anemometer. Parameters such as pulsating frequency (f = 0, 10 and 20 Hz) and the nozzle-to-palate spacing (H/D = 2, 10) are considered at the jet Reynolds number of 20,000. Consequently, the significant changes of flow structure and local Nusselt number distribution due to pulsations are observed. In the case of H/D = 2, the enhanced heat transfer coefficient exceeding 30 % is observed at the stagnation point. At the high H/D, heat transfer rate increases with pulsation frequency.

The heat transfer characteristics off swirling air jet impinging on a heated flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The main object is to enhance the heat transfer rate by increasing turbulence intensity of impinging jet with a specially designed swirl generator. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of swirling jet were measured using a hot-wire anemomety. The temperature distribution on the heated flat surface was measured with thermocouples. As a result the swirl effect on the local heat transfer rate on the impinging plate is confined mainly in the small nozzle-to-plate spacings such as L/D<3 at the stagnation region. For small nozzle-to-plate spacings, the local heat transfer in the stagnation region is enhanced from the increased turbulence intensity due to swirl motion, compared with the conventional axisymmetric impinging jet without swirl. For example, the local Nusselt number of swirling jet with swirl number Sw=0.75 and Sw=1 is about 9.7-76% higher than that of conventional impinging jet at the radial location of R/D=0.5. With the increase of the nozzle-to-plate distance, the stagnation heat transfer rate is decreased due to the diminishing axial momentum of the swirling jet. However, the swirling impinging jet for all nozzle-to-plate spacings tested in this study does not enhance the average heat transfer rate.
The Paper studies the flow and heat transfer characteristics to a jet impinging at different oblique angles, to a plane surface by numerical methods. The flowfield and heat transfer rate associated with the oblique Impingement of an axisymmetric jet are of interest as a result of its presence in numerous technological Problems. For the computation of heat transfer rate, the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-\bar {{\upsilon}'^ 2}$ turbulent model were adapted. The accuracy of the numerical calculations was compared with various experimental data reported in the literature. ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-\bar {{\upsilon}'^ 2}$ model showed better agreement with experimental data than standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model in prediction of the turbulent intensity and the heat transfer rate. In the case of computation of flowfield, the study carries on the ${\alpha}=45$ deg, h/D=4.95. The jet Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter(D), was 48,000. For the computation of heat transfer rate, the Re=20,000, the jet orifice-to-plate spacings(L/D) are 4, 6 and 10, and the angle between the axis of the jet orifice and the plate surface is set at 30, 45, 60, or 90 deg. For the smaller spacings, the near-peak Nusselt numbers are not significantly effected by the initial decreases in the Jet angle. The overall shape of the local Nusselt number x-axis profile is influenced by both the jet orifice-to-plate spacing and the jet angle.
