Centerline Turbulent Characteristics of an Axisymmetric Flow with the Swirl (소용돌이 성분이 있는 축대칭유동의 중심난류 특성)

  • The swirl effect on an axisymmetric turbulence has been investigated along its centerline by the hot wire anemometry. Flow facility to generate and conrol the swirl has been built by using the rotating honeycomb and grid. For the case of internal flows, as the strength of the swirl increases the flow tends to be locally isotropic by modifying the radial and the rotational components mainly. In comparison with those of the plain free jet, the decay of the centerline turbulences seems to be delayed substantially even with a slight swirl component.

  • Time marching algorithms applied to compressible Navier-Stokes equation have a convergence problem at low Mach number. It is mainly due to the eigenvalue stiffness and pressure singularity as Mach number approaches to zero. Among the several methods to overcome the shortcomings of time marching scheme, time derivative preconditioning method have been used successfully. In this numerical analysis, we adopted a preconditioner of K.H. Chen and developed a two-dimensional, axisymmetric Navier-Stokes program. The steady state driven cavity flow and backward facing step flow problems were computed to confirm the accuracy and the robustness of preconditioned algorithm for low Mach number flows. And the transonic and supersonic flows insice the JPL axisymmetric nozzle internal flow is exampled to investigate the effects of preconditioning at high Mach number flow regime. Test results showed excellent agreement with the experimental data.

  • The two major problems related to the blood flow in a floating type polymer valve are thrombus formation and hemolysis. It is well known that the shear stress in the fluid and flow separation around the valve are blamed for such disastrous phenomena. In this viewpoint, through study of the flow field around the valve is imperative to improve design of the valve. The aim of this study is to investigate the fluid flow around a floating type polymer valve. The numerical method employed in this study is the finite element software called ADINA. Incompressible viscous flow is assumed for blood using the assumption of Newtonian fluid. In this study, two prominent features of the axisymmetric flow around the floating type polymer valve are observed: jet-like flows observed near the gap between the conduit and the valve, and recirculating flow downstream of the valve. We also provided a detailed description of shear stress field according to the variation of flow conditions. The shear stress in fluid has its maximum value near the gap between the valve and the conduit.

A study on the deviation angle of the rotating blade row in an axial- flow compressor (軸流壓縮機 回轉翼列의 流出偏差角에 관한 硏究)

  • Deviation angles are predicted by numerical calculation of three-dimensional compressible flow through the rotating blade row in axial flow compressor. Three-dimensional flow fields are analyzed by the quasi three-dimensional combination of blade-to blade surfaces and hub-to shroud stream surfaces and calculated by the finite element method in the cyclic calculation of both stream surfaces. In the blade-to blade calculations the method of boundary stream line correction is used and in the hub-to shroud calculations the loss effects due to viscous flow are included. The computational results are compared with the available experimental one. It is shown that the computational results from blade-to-blade flow calculation are correct for incompressible, compressible low subsonic and high subsonic flow at the inlet, and the loss effects on the deviation angle can be neglected in the range of the subsonic flow less than the critical Mach number for the axisymmetric flow and even for 3-D non-axisymmetric flow with loss. And it is found that the present results are better agreed with the experimental data than Lieblein's one.

  • Limit analysis is based on the duality theorem which equates the least upper bound to the greatest lower bound. In this study, limit analysis of axisymmetric forming problem with workhardening materials is formulated by minimizing the upper bound functional and finite element program is developed for forward estrusion. Limit loads, velocity and flow line fields are directly obtained under various process conditions and deformation characteristics such as strains, strain rates and grid distortion are obtained from the optimum velocity components by numerical calculation. The experimental observation was carried out for extrusion and compared with computed results. The good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is shown that the developed programming is very effective for the analysis of axisymmetric extrusion.

  • A two-dimensional Stokes flow past a circular disk in a circular tube is analyzed. The circular disk is located coaxially with the circular tube and the Hagen-Poiseuille flow exists at upstream and downstream far from the circular disk. The Stokes approximation is used and the flow is investigated analytically by using the method of eigenfunction expansion and the method of least square. From the analysis, the stream function and the pressure of the flow field are obtained, and the streamlines and pressure distribution are shown. Also, the pressure and shear stress distributions on the circular disk and circular tube wall are calculated, and shown for some typical radii of the circular disk. The additional pressure drop induced by the disk and the drag force exerted on the disk are compared as functions of the radius of the circular disk, and it is shown that the shear force on the wall of the tube increases due to the disk.

  • An axisymmetric submerged body(L=5.6m, Diam=0.53m) is installed in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) of KRISO and the nominal and total velocities without and with the propeller in operation, respectively, are measured using Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV). The flow field is nearly axisymmetric except the wake of the supporting strut, and is considered ideal to study the hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and the oncoming axisymmetric sheared flow. The measured velocity data are then provided to compute the propeller-induced velocity to get the effective velocity, which is defined by subtracting the propeller-induced velocity from the total velocity. We adopted, in computing the induced velocity, two different methods including the vortex lattice method and the vortex tube actuator model to evaluate the resultant effective velocity distribution. To secure a fundamental base of experimental data necessary for the research on the effective wake, we measured the drag of the submerged body, the nominal and total velocity distributions at various axial locations for three different tunnel water speeds.

A Numerical Analysis of Supersonic Intake Buzz in an Axisymmetric Ramjet Engine

  • A numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the inlet buzz and combustion oscillation in an axisymmetric ramjet engine with wedge-type flame holders. The physical model of concern includes the entire engine flow path, extending from the leading edge of the inlet center-body through the exhaust nozzle. The theoretical formulation is based on the Farve-averaged conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentration, and accommodates finite-rate chemical kinetics and variable thermo-physical properties. Turbulence closure is achieved using a combined scheme comprising of a low-Reynolds number k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation model and Sarkar's compressible turbulence model. Detailed flow phenomena such as inlet flow aerodynamics, flame evolution, and acoustic excitation as well as their interactions, are investigated. Mechanisms responsible for driving the inlet buzz are identified and quantified for the engine operating at subcritical conditions.

  • A numerical analysis is performed using two dimensional axisymmetric RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations system on the transition sequence of the Integrated Rocket Ramjet and the unsteady reacting flow-field in a ramjet combustor during unstable combustion. The mode transition of an axisymmetric ramjet is numerically simulated starting from the initial condition of the boost end phase of the entire ramjet. The unsteady reacting flow-field within combustor is computed for varying injection area. In calculation results of the transition, the terminal normal shock is occurred at the downstream of diffuser throat section and no notable combustor pressure oscillation is observed after certain time of the inlet port cover open. For the case of a small injection area at the same equivalence ratio, periodic pressure oscillation in the combustor leads to the terminal shock expulsion from the inlet and hence the buzz instability occurred.

  • A numerical study of axisymmetric rocket main nozzle flow has been accomplished. The CSCM upwind flux difference splitting method with an iterative time marching scheme having second order accuracy in time and space has been used to simulate unsteady flow characteristics in an axisymmetric rocket main nozzle. Though the pressure vary at nozzle inlet with the lapse of time, Mach No. and the density were not changed significontly compared with the temperature. Specific heat ratio $\gamma$=1.134 predicted higher temperature at nozzle throat and exit and nondimensional thrust coefficients at exit than specific heat ratio $\gamma$=1.4 did.
