It is investigated that internal defect of planetary gear which consists of two gears with different number of teeth on both side. The internal defect, central burst, begin to form at the place of adiabatic shear band which usually has maximum ductile fracture value during the forming operation, forward and backward extrusion. It makes the plastic forming of planetary gear difficult. The prediction of defect to minimize the cost to produce the planetary gear. The finite element simulation code DEFORM is applied to analyze the defects. In the analysis, the toothed gears are assumed as axisymmetric cylinders whose diameters are equal to those of pitch circles of the each gears. Experiments were carried out with the SCM415 alloy steel as billet material and AIDA 630-ton knuckle-joint press. The calculated results and experimental inspections are compared to design a die and blank without defects and the results are useful to predict the internal defect.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the robustness of p-version model with hierarchic intergrals of Legendre shape functions in various applications including plane stress/strain, axisymmetric and shell problems. The most important symptoms of accuracy failure in modern finite elements are spurious mechanisms and a phenomenon known as locking which are exhibited for incompressible materials and irregular shapes which contain aspect ratios(R/t, a/b), tapered ratio(d/b), and skewness. The condition numbers and energy norms are used to estimate numerical errors, convergence characteristics and algorithmic efficiencies for verifying the aforementioned symptoms of accuracy failure. Numerical results from p-version models are compared with those from NASTRAN, SAP90, and Cheung's hybrid elements.

For the numerical computation of three-dimensional compressible flow field within a blade row in a centrifugal compressor, a quasi 3-dimensional solver which combines a reversible B-B flow and an irreversible H-S flow using finite element methods was developed. In a reversible B-B flow, the governing coordinates are modified in order to be applied to any type of turbomachinery, and two kinds of stream functions are introduced in order to make the Kutta condition exactly satisfied. In an irreversible H-S flow, the changes of entropy in the irreversible governing equations are determined not by empirical source but by the theoretical treatment of dissipation forces. The dissipation forces are obtained from the distribution of shear stresses in the flow passage which are given from the wall shear stresses using the exponential functions. A more accurate quasi-3-dimensional solver is established where the effect of body forces is involved in the non-axisymmetric H-S flow. Some numerical results obtained from authors' previous studies for axial flow machines assure that the present method is able to predict well as long as the flow is subsonic and not under strong viscous effect.
This paper presents the plastic inhomogeneous deformation behavior of bimetal composite rods during the axisymmetric and steady-state extrusion process through a conical die. The rigid-plastic FE model considering frictional contact problem was used to analyze the co-extrusion process with material combinations of Cu/Al. Different cases of initial geometry shape for composite material were simulated under different conditions of co-extrusion process, which includes the interference and frictional conditions. The main design parameters influencing on deformation pattern are diameter ratio of the composite components and semi-die angle. Efforts are focused on the deformation patterns, velocity gradient, predicted forming load and the end distance through the various simulations. Simulation results indicate that there is an obvious difference of forming pattern with various diameter ratio and semi-die angle. The analysis in this paper is concentrated on the evaluation of the design parameters on the deformation pattern of composite rod.

A 75ton thrust turbopump system for liquid rocket engine was analyzed thermally and mechanically. A 2D axisymmetric model of the turbopump assembly was created. In the analysis operation cycle including chill-down, operation and post operation steps were considered. Appropriate heat transfer conditions for each step were modeled and applied. Transient temperature distribution was calculated, consequent mechanical analysis was conducted to predict stress and deformation. Effects of external heat insulators and heat dissipation at the bearings were considered in the heat transfer analysis.
In this study a simple model is developed that predicts impact damage in a composite laminate avoiding the need of the time-consuming dynamic finite element method (FEM). The analytical model uses a non-linear approximation method (Rayleigh-Ritz) and the large deflection plate theory to predict the number of failed plies and damage area in a quasi-isotropic composite circular plate (axisymmetric problem) due to a point impact load at its centre. It is assumed that the deformation due to a static transverse load is similar to that oc curred in a low velocity impact. It is found that the model, despite its simplicity, is in good agreement with FEM predictions and experimental data for the deflection of the composite plate and gives a good estimate of the number of failed plies due to fibre breakage. The predicted damage zone could be used with a fracture mechanics model developed by the second investigator and co-workers to calculate the compression after impact strength of such laminates. This approach could save significant running time when compared to FEM solutions.

A split-die design for the cold forging of symmetric parts such as those having a hexagonal cross-section is presented in this paper. Parts with a hexagonal cross-section, such as bolt heads and nuts, should be forged with a die that has a hexagonal-shaped hole. A split type die is required to mitigate the buildup of stress concentrations located at the corners of the hexagonal hole. Generally, the insert of a hexagonal die is made by cutting each corner of a cylinder using a hexagonal hole and then combined with the die and shrink-fitted. However, split dies face problems when extruding material at the corners of the hexagonal split die. To address this problem, two types of split dies were evaluated: rounded hexagonal dies and angular hexagonal dies. The effects of the pre-stress ring on the dies were compared and analyzed and results show that using the angular split hexagonal die can extend the lifetime of forging dies.
This paper investigates the time dependent behaviour of Haarajoki test embankment on soft structured clay deposit. Half of the embankment is constructed on an area improved with prefabricated vertical drains, while the other half is constructed on the natural deposit without any ground improvement. To analyse the PVD-improved subsoil, axisymmetric vertical drains were converted into equivalent plane strain conditions using three different approaches. The construction and consolidation of the embankment are analysed with the finite element method using a recently developed anisotropic model for time-dependent behaviour of soft clays. The constitutive model, namely ACM-S accounts for combined effects of plastic anisotropy, interparticle bonding and degradation of bonds and creep. For comparison, the problem is also analysed with isotropic Soft Soil Creep and Modified Cam Clay models. The results of the numerical analyses are compared with the field measurements. The results show that neglecting effects of anisotropy, destructuration and creep may lead to inaccurate predictions of soft clay response. Additionally, the numerical results show that the matching methods accurately predict the consolidation behaviour of the embankment on PVD improved soft clays and provide a useful tool for engineering practice.

Rapid prototyping(RP) is a novel technology to create 3D products directly from CAD system. This study proposes a new RP method which uses the PZT ceramic plate to make a Drop-On-Demand liquid jet from the nozzle. The characteristic of drop formation in the new system is investigated both numerically and experimentally. The optimal drop for 3-D Printing can be obtained by the proper amplitude and frequency of the applied voltage. Also the process of the drop formation is analyzed using the pressure wave theory and verified by numerical simulation. First, the pressure wave generated by the deformation of the Piezo-plate at the nozzle is analyzed by solving the 2D axisymmetric wave equation via Finite Element Method. Finally, the drop formation process is simulated using a commercial software, FLOW 3D considering the pressure at the nozzle obtained by solving the wave equation as the boundary condition.

The aim of this study is focused on getting an almost exact solution which is the simplicity and exactness of an axisymmetrically loaded cylindrical shell. This method replaces the finite element method which is a very powerful tool for analysis of any kind of structure which has an arbitrary shape, but is still a numerical analysis. Instead, this study uses the method of distribution of end actions which is a kind of iteration technique to implement the leading matrix method. The distribution and carry-over factors of a cylinder are calculated by the theory of a differential equation of a beam on an elastic foundation. The results are satisfactory when this method is applied to a cylinder that is subjected to a concentrated load and hydrostatic pressure when compared with the BEF analogy separately.
