The flow inside an axial turbomachinery must be unsteady. Rotor-stator interaction by two blade rows influences performance, the generation of noise and vibration. So, it will be necessary to study the rotor-stator interaction for the design of an axial fan in which the axial gap between two blade rows is small. In this study, rotor-stator interaction is investigated by experimental methods. The research fan has one stage which consists of 24 rotor blades and 22 stator blades. Three-dimensional velocities measured using $45^{\circ}$ slanted hot wire probe and total pressure is measured using Kiel total pressure probe between rotor and stator with the axial 25%, 55%, 145% of chord length,. This study describes the influence of rotor-stator gap on the flow pattern, performance and loss. The efficiency curve show that the change of the rotor-stator gap make difference in the efficiency. And, the 3-dimensional velocity distribution show that the potential interaction between the rotor and the stator have a great effect on the flow field downstream of rotor, where there are wake flow. various vortices in hub region and leakage vortex in casing region etc.
A stereoscopic PIV (SPIV) measurement system based on the translation configuration was developed and applied to the flow behind a forward-swept axial-fan. Measurement of three orthogonal velocity components is essential for flow analysis of three-dimensional flows such as flow around a fan or propeller. In this study, the translation configuration was adopted to calculate the out-of-plane velocity component from 2-D PIV data obtained from two CCD cameras. The error caused by the out-of-plane motion was estimated by direct comparison of the 2-D PIV and 3-D SPIV results that measured from the particle images captured simultaneously. The comparison shows that the error ratio is relatively high in the region of higher out-of-plane motion near the axial fan blade. The turbulence intensity measured by the 2-D PIV method is bigger by about 5.8% in maximum compared with that of the 3-D SPIV method. The phase-averaged velocity field results show that the wake behind an axial fan has a periodic flow structure with respect to the blade phase and the characteristic flow structure is shifted downstream in the next phase.
Numerical simulations are made to predict the axial force coefficients of a two-stage launch vehicle, and the results are compared with those by wind tunnel tests. It is found that the forebody axial force is not affected by whether the base of the body is modeled or not. Modeling the sting support used in wind tunnel tests reduced the base axial force compared to the results without it. The present calculation shows that the forebody axial forces are underestimated while the base axial forces are overestimated. The total axial force, therefore, compares with the experimental data with better accuracy by cancelling out the errors of opposite signs. Modeling of the sting support in numerical simulations is found to be necessary to get a better agreement with the experiments for both base and overall axial force coefficients.
Using the axial Green's function method for Steady Stokes flows, we introduce a new pressure correction formula to satisfy the incompressibility condition, in which the pressure is related to the integral of the second order derivatives of the velocity. Based on this formula, we propose the iterative method for solving the Stokes flows in complicated domains. Even if the domain is complex, this method maintains the second order of convergence for the velocity.
Up to the present the study on the performance prediction of HAWT was perfomed mainly by assuming the axial flow. So in this paper we aimed at the fully non-axial flow of HAWT. For this purpose, we defined the wind turbine pitch angle in addition to the yaw angle to specify the arbitrary wind direction. And we adopted the Glauert method as the basic analysis method then modified this method suitably for our goal. By comparing the computational results obtained by this modified new Glaurert method with the experimental results, it was proved that our method was a very efficient method.
The present work is aimed at investigating an unusual variation in flow and performance characteristics of a small propeller fan at low flow rates. A performance test of the fan showed dual performance characteristics, i.e., radial type characteristics at low flow rates and axial type at high flow rates. Dual performance characteristics of the fan are numerically investigated using viscous flow calculations. The Finite Volume Method is used to solve the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations in the flow domain around a fan. The performance parameters and the circumferentially averaged velocity components obtained from the calculations are compared with the experimental results. Numerical values of the performance parameters show good agreement with the measured values. The calculation simulates the steep variations of performance parameters at low flow rates and shows the difference in the flow structure between high and low flow rates. At a low flow coefficient of $\Phi$=0.2, the flow enters the fan in an axial direction and is discharged radially outward at its tip, which is much like the flow characteristics of a centrifugal fan. The centrifugal effect at low flow rates makes a significant difference in performance characteristics of the fan. As the inlet flow rate increases, flow around the fan changes into the mixed type at $\Phi$=0.24 and the axial discharge at $\Phi$=0.4.
This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes analysis to optimize the blade shape of an axial flow fan. Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations with $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations using the unstructured grid. Regression analysis is used for generating response surface, and it is validated by ANOVA and t-statistics. Four geometric variables, i.e., sweep and lean angles at mean and tip respectively were employed to improve the efficiency. The computational results are compared with experimental data and the comparisons show generally good agreements. As a main result of the optimization, the total efficiency was successfully improved. Also, detailed effects of sweep and lean on the axial flow fan are discussed.
The flow inside an axial turbomachinery with multi-stage can be characterized as unsteady phenomena. In order to predict accurately these complex unsteady flow patterns including rotor-stator interaction effects, enormous computer resources are required. So it is not compatible in preliminary design process. In this study, steady coupled blade row flow with rotor-stator interaction solver is developed using interrow mixing model and used to predict the performance of the axial fan. To verify the computational method, the calculations are compared with experimental results and show satisfactory agreement with them. The interaction effects on the performance of the axial fan have also been studied by comparing the results of steady coupled blade row and steady single blade row flow calculation.
In this paper, a successful noise reduction of an axial flow fan for a refrigerator is presented. The vortex sheet generated at the blade tip of fan was suppressed by changing the shape of the tip. The structure of vortex sheet and detailed flow pattern around the fan were studied by two-dimensional LDV(Laser-Doppler Velocimetry). Effective ways to work out the result as mentioned above are to make the tip of the blade varied in thickness and to have elliptical shapes. To seek the optimal value fur the shape of new fan, several cases were examined. Through the application of the methods, the refrigerator became less noisy by 3.8 dB(A) in terms of air-borne noise produced only by the axial flow fan compared to the current one.

This paper establishes an iterative calculation model for the hydrodynamic performance of propeller in oblique flow based on low order potential based surface panel method. The hydrodynamic performance of propeller is calculated through panel method which is also used to calculate the induced velocity. The slipstream of propeller is adjusted according to the inflow velocity and the induced velocity. The oblique flow is defined by the axial inflow velocity and the incident angle. The calculation results of an instance show that the thrust and torque of propeller decrease with the increase of axial inflow velocity but increase with the incident angle. The unsteadiness of loads on the propeller blade surface gets more intensified with the increases of axial inflow velocity and incident angle. However, comparing with the effect of axial inflow velocity on the unsteadiness of the hydrodynamic performance of propeller, the effect of the incident angle is more remarkable.
