  • Currently, focused ion beams (FIB) are widely used for specimen preparation in atom probe tomography (APT), which is a three-dimensional and atomic-scale compositional analysis tool. Specimen preparation, in which a specific region of interest is identified and a sharp needle shape created, is the first step towards successful APT analysis. The FIB technique is a powerful tool for site-specific specimen preparation because it provides a lift-out technique and a controllable manipulation function. In this paper, we demonstrate a general procedure containing the crucial points of FIB-based specimen preparation. We introduce aluminum holders with moveable pin and an axial rotation manipulator for specimen handling, which are useful for flipping and rotating the specimen to present the backside and the perpendicular direction. We also describe specimen preparation methods for nanowires and nanopowders, using a pick-up method and an embedding method by epoxy resin, respectively.

  • Purpose: This study classified alveolar arch forms and evaluated differences in alveolar bone thickness among arch forms in the anterior esthetic region using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: Axial views of 113 CBCT images were assessed at the level of 3 mm below the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) of the right and left canines. The root center points of teeth in the anterior esthetic region were used as reference points. Arch forms were classified according to their transverse dimensions and the intercanine width-to-depth ratio. The buccolingual alveolar bone thickness of each tooth was measured at 3 mm below the CEJ and at the mid-root level. Differences in the mean thicknesses among arch forms were analyzed. Results: Anterior maxillary arches could be classified as long narrow, short medium, long medium, and long wide arches. Significant differences in buccolingual alveolar bone thickness among the arch groups were found at both levels. The long wide arches presented the greatest bone thickness, followed by the long medium arches, while the long narrow and short medium arches were the thinnest. Conclusion: Arch forms were classified as long narrow, short medium, long medium, and long wide. The buccolingual alveolar bone thickness exhibited significant differences among the arch forms.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans appears to be a valuable method for assessing pulp canal configuration. The aim of this report is to describe endodontic treatment of a mandibular second premolar with aberrant pulp canal morphology detected by CBCT and confirmed by 3D modeling. An accessory canal was suspected during endodontic treatment of the mandibular left second premolar in a 21 year old woman with a chief complaint of pulsating pain. Axial cross-sectional CBCT scans revealed that the pulp canal divided into mesiobuccal, lingual, and buccal canals in the middle third and ended as four separate foramina. 3D modeling confirmed the anomalous configuration of the fused root with a deep lingual groove. Endodontic treatment of the tooth was completed in two appointments. The root canals were obturated using lateral compaction of gutta-percha and root canal sealer. The tooth remained asymptomatic and did not develop periapical pathology until 12 months postoperatively. CBCT and 3D modeling enable preoperative evaluation of aberrant root canal systems and facilitate endodontic treatment.

  • The implementation of imaging methods that enable sensitive and specific observation of anatomical structures has been a constant in the evolution of endodontic therapy. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables 3-dimensional (3D) spatial anatomical navigation in the 3 volumetric planes (sagittal, coronal and axial) which translates into great accuracy for the identification of endodontic pathologies/conditions. CBCT interpretation consists of 2 main components: (i) the generation of specific tasks of the image and (ii) the subsequent interpretation report. A systematic and reproducible method to review CBCT scans can improve the accuracy of the interpretation process, translating into greater precision in terms of diagnosis and planning of endodontic clinical procedures. MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase and Scopus were searched from inception to March 2023. This narrative review addresses the theoretical concepts, elements of interpretation and applications of the CBCT scan in endodontics. In addition, the contents and rationale for reporting 3D endodontic imaging are discussed.

  • We report a case of endodermal cyst of the posterior fossa. A 44-year-old man presented with headache for three months. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a $6{\times}2.5{\times}2cm$ sized extra-axial non-enhancing cystic lesion on the ventral aspect to brain stem. To avoid retraction injury to brain stem, far lateral transcondylar approach was selected. Right suboccipital craniotomy and partial removal of occipital condyle with resection of C-1 and C-2 hemilaminae exposed the extra-axial cyst well. The cyst has a whitish thick membrane. It was not adherent to brain stem and lower cranial nerves. Total removal of the cyst was done without difficulty. Histological analysis disclosed a layer of pseudostratified columnar epithelium with basement membrane. The result of immunohistochemical study was consistent with endodermal cyst.

  • The role of radiographic imaging in determining the size, numbers and the position of implants is very important. To perform the implant procedure, the dentist needs to evaluate the bone pathology and bone density, and to know the precise height, width, and contour of the alveolar process, as well as its relationship to the maxillary sinus and mandibular canal. The author analyzed 3 implant cases for treatment planning with the cone beam CT. All axial, panoramic, serial and buccolingual-sectioned images of 3 cases with stent including vertical marker were taken by using Mercuray (Hitachi, Japan). When the curved line drawn intentionally did not include dot image of a vertical marker on the axial image of CBCT, the image of the vertical marker was deformed on its buccolingually sectioned image. There was wide discrepancy in inclination between the alveolar bone and tooth on buccolingually sectioned image.

  • Multi-detector row CT (MDCT) provides faster speed, longer coverage in conjunction with thin slices, improved spatial resolution, and ability to produce high quality muliplanar and three-dimensional (3D) images. MDCT has revolutionized the non-invasive evaluation of the central airways. Simultaneous display of axial, multiplanar, and 3D images raises precision and accuracy of the radiologic diagnosis of central airway disease. This article introduces central airway imaging with MDCT emphasizing on the emerging role of multiplanar and 3D reconstruction.

  • Purpose: Abdominal CT (computed tomography) is a principal diagnostic imaging modality for torso trauma at the Emergency Department (ED). When acute osseous pelvic injuries are detected by abdominal CT, additional three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction pelvic CT is often performed. We compared abdominal CT with pelvic CT to provide information about acute osseous pelvic injuries. Methods: A retrospective investigation of patients'electronic medical records during the five year period between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008 among Korean soldiers who underwent pelvic CT after abdominal CT at the ED was conducted. Axial images of abdominal CT were compared with axial images and 3D reconstruction images of pelvic CT. Results: Sixteen patients underwent subsequent pelvic CT after abdominal CT. Axial images of abdominal CT showed the same results in terms of fracture detection and classification when compared to axial images and 3D reconstruction images of pelvic CT. Pelvic CT (including 3D reconstruction images) followed by abdominal CT neither detected additional fracture nor changed the fracture type. Conclusion: This study has failed to show any superiority of pelvic CT (including 3D reconstruction images) over abdominal CT in detecting acute osseous pelvic injury. When 3D information is deemed be mandatory, 3D reconstructions of abdominal CT can be requested rather than obtaining an additional pelvic CT for 3D reconstruction.

  • Purpose : To determine normal CT number range of parotid gland by analyzing the change by age increase and the difference among individuals and between both sexes in CT number of normal parotid gland. Materials & Methods : 134 subjects who took the CT scan between the period of Jan. 1996 and Dec. 1997 at Yonsei University, Dental Hospital were selected. Criteria for selection were that the patients must be within the normal range clinically and radiologically, and the entire parotid gland on the axial view must be shown. Among the axial views. the one showing the greatest parotid gland size was selected and its CT number was recorded. Also. CT numbers from both masseter muscle were recorded as its control. Results : There was statistically significant correlation between CT number of right and left of parotid glands and masseter muscles. With the increase of age. there is a significant decrease in the CT number of parotid gland(p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in CT number between sexes except the 7th decade and beyond age group of parotid gland(p>0.05). Conclusion : As age increases, CT number of parotid gland has a tendency to decrease, and there is no significant difference in the CT numbers between left and right parotid gland. Therefore in the CT scan of patients suspected of having a salivary gland disease of the parotid gland. to consider normal range of the age-dependent CT numbers of parotid gland and compare the CT numbers of the right and left parotid gland might be useful in diagnosing the disease.
