The relationship between pressure drop and liquid flow rate, for an axial and a radial flow chromatographic column packed with compressible porous media was theoretically analyzed using modified Kozeny-Carman equation. The results were compared with experimental observations obtained using compressible DEAE-agarose as a model medium. At 2-9 psi range studied, the theoretical derivation accounting for 'gel compression' effect predicted simple Langmuirian type response of volumetric flow rate to changes in pressure drop. On the other hand, the experimental response was more or less sigmoidal. At the same pressure drop, radial column showed 2-3 times higher flow rates than those of axial column both theoretically and experimentally. Using r-HBsAg crude extract, protein resolution effects between the two types of columns at different flow rates were compared side-by-side. It turned out that, though general chromatographic behavior was very similar, axial column was somewhat superior in terms of r-HBsAg recovery yield and specificity. However, the number of theoretical plates analysis indicated the protein resolution effects were comparable.

Dynamic response of structures can be evaluated experimentally by conducting cyclic loading tests. It has been known that steel materials are rate-dependent and the lateral response of a structure is significantly affected by the presence of axial force. However, the rate-dependency of steel column structures subjected to both axial and lateral loads has not been sufficiently studied yet due to the difficulty of controlling the axial force in a real-time manner during test. This study introduces an advanced way to apply the axial load in real-time to a column specimen using the adaptive time series (ATS) compensator and the flexible loading beam (FLB), where the H-shape steel columns made of SS275 are used for monotonic and cyclic loading tests with various loading rates with axial loads. The lateral strength and post-yield response of the steel columns are compared for each of monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The estimating equation of yield stress of various strain rate has proposed and finite element analysis were performed for comparison.
The effect of shear coupled with axial force variation on the inelastic seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete bridge piers is investigated in this paper. For this purpose, a hysteretic axial-shear interaction model was developed and implemented in a nonlinear finite element analysis program. Thus, flexure-shear-axial interaction is simulated under variable amplitude reversed actions. Comparative studies for shear-dominated reinforced concrete columns indicated that a conventional FE model based on flexure-axial interaction only gave wholly inadequate results and was therefore incapable of predicting the behaviour of such members. Analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge damaged during the Northridge (California 1994) earthquake demonstrated the importance of shear modelling. The contribution of shear deformation to total displacement was considerable, leading to increased ductility demand. Moreover, the effect of shear with axial force variation can significantly affect strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete members. It is concluded that flexure-shear-axial interaction should be taken into account in assessing the behaviour of reinforced concrete bridge columns, especially in the presence of high vertical ground motion.
In this paper, using perturbation and Galerkin method, the response of a resonant viscoelastic microbeam to an electric actuation is obtained. The microbeam is under axial load and electrical load. It is assumed that midplane is stretched, when the beam is deflected. The equation of motion is derived using the Newton's second law. The viscoelastic model is taken to be the Kelvin-Voigt model. In the first section, the static deflection is obtained using the Galerkin method. Exact linear symmetric mode shape of a straight beam and its deflection function under constant transverse load are used as admissible functions. So, an analytical expression that describes the static deflection at all points is obtained. Comparing the result with previous research show that using deflection function as admissible function decreases the computation errors and previous calculations volume. In the second section, the response of a microbeam resonator system under primary and secondary resonance excitation has been obtained by analytical multiple scale perturbation method combined with the Galerkin method. It is shown, that a small amount of viscoelastic damping has an important effect and causes to decrease the maximum amplitude of response, and to shift the resonance frequency. Also, it shown, that an increase of the DC voltage, ratio of the air gap to the microbeam thickness, tensile axial load, would increase the effect of viscoelastic damping, and an increase of the compressive axial load would decrease the effect of viscoelastic damping.
This paper presents a detailed parametric study, conducted using finite element tools to cover a range of several geometric and material parameters, on the behaviour of thin-walled partially encased composite (PEC) columns. The PEC columns studied herein are composed of thin-walled built-up H-shaped steel sections with concrete infill cast between the flanges. Transverse links are provided between the opposing flanges to improve resistance to local buckling. The parametric study is confined to eccentrically-loaded columns subjected to major axis bending only. The parameters that were varied include the overall column slenderness ratio (L/d), load eccentricity ratio (e/d), link spacing-to-depth ratio (s/d), flange plate slenderness ratio (b/t) and concrete compressive strength ($f_{cu}$). The overall column slenderness ratio was chosen to be the primary variable with values of 5, 10 and 15. Other parameters were varied within each case of L/d ratio. The effects of the selected parameters on the behaviour of PEC columns were studied with respect to the failure mode, peak axial load, axial load versus average axial strain response, axial load versus lateral displacement response, moment versus lateral displacement behaviour and the axial load-moment interaction diagram. The results of the parametric study are presented in the paper and the influences of each of the parameters investigated are discussed.
A simplified spring connection modelling approach for steel flush endplate beam-to-column connections in fire has been developed to enable realistic behaviour of connections to be incorporated into full-scale frame analyses at elevated temperature. Due to its simplicity and reliability, the proposed approach permits full-scale high-temperature frame analysis to be conducted without high computational cost. The proposed simplified spring connection modelling approach has been used to investigate the influence of connection ductility (both axial and rotational) on frame behaviour in fire. 2D steel and 3D composite frames with a range of beam spans were modelled to aid the understanding of the differences in frame response in fire where the beam-to-column connections have different axial and rotational ductility assumptions. The modelling results highlight that adopting the conventional rigid or pinned connection assumptions does not permit the axial forces acting on the connections to be accurately predicted, since the axial ductility of the connection is completely neglected when the rotational ductility is either fully restrained or free. By accounting for realistic axial and rotational ductilities of beam-to-column connections, the frame response in fire can be predicted more accurately, which is advantageous in performance-based structural fire engineering design.

In this paper, simplified modeling approach describing the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete columns is discussed. The inelastic response of a reinforced concrete column or pier subjected to cyclic deformation reversals or earthquake ground motion is evaluated by use of lumped hysteretic representation. For this purpose, the hystertic model under axial force variation is developed and implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program. The analytical predictions obtained with the new formulation are compared with test results and reveal accuracy and applicability in terms of strength and stiffness. In addition, comparison between results with and without axial force variation stresses the importance of the proposed approach.

With the results of calculation for natural frequencies, the forced reponses of coupled vibration of propulsion shafting were analysed by the modal analysis method. For the forced response analysis, axial exciting forces, axial damper/detuner, propeller exciting forces and damping coefficients were extensively investigated. As the conclusion of this study, some items are cleared as next. - The torsional amplitudes are not influenced by the radial excitation forces. - The axial vibrational amplitudes are influenced by the tangential exciting forces. An increase of amplitude is observed for the speed range in the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. - The coupling effect becomes larger if torsional and axial critical speed are closer together. - The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong, comparing with those of axial forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, as a resume one can say, that- Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimension model is still valid. - The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is impotent, especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimension model is insufficient in most of cases. - The torsional exciting torque of propeller can be neglected in most of cases. But, the axial exciting forces of propeller can not be neglected for calculating axial vibration of propulsion shafting.

Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried out in this work. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used in the flow analysis. Three design variables were selected to optimize the stacking line of the blade. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, adiabatic efficiency was successfully improved. It is also found that the design process provides reliable design of a turbomachinery blade with reasonable computing time.

Dynamic response of buried pipelines both in the axial and the transverse directions on concrete pipe and steel pipe, FRP pipe were investigated through a forced vibration analysis. The dynamic behavior of the buried pipelines for the forced vibration is found to exhibit two different forms, a transient response and a steady state response, depending on the time before and after the transfer of a seismic wave on the end of the buried pipeline. The former is identified by a slight change in its behavior before the sinusoidal-shaped seismic wave travels along the whole length of the pipeline whereas the latter by the complete form of a sinusoidal wave when the wave travels throughout the pipeline. The transient response becomes insignificant as the wave speed increases. From the results of the dynamic responses at the many points of the pipeline, we have found that the responses appeared to be dependent critically on the boundary end conditions. Such effects are found to be most prominent especially for the maximum values of the displacement and the strain and its position.
