  • Dynamic characteristics of the clearance flow between an axially oscillating rotational disk and a stationary disk were examined by experiments and computations based on a bulk flow model. In the case without pressure fluctuations at the inlet and outlet of the clearance, parallel and contracting flow paths had an effect to stabilize the axial oscillation of the rotating disk. The enlarged flow path had an effect to destabilize the axial oscillation due to the negative damping and stiffness for outward and inward flows, respectively. It was shown that the fluid force can be decomposed into the component caused by the inlet or outlet pressure fluctuation without the axial oscillation and that due to the axial oscillation without the inlet or outlet pressure fluctuation. A method to predict the stiffness and damping coefficients is proposed for general cases when the device is combined with an arbitrary flow system.

  • This paper handled an investigation on the turbulent flow characteristics of three-dimensional small-size axial fan(SSAF) according to operating loads. Also, it was carried out by unsteady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional large eddy simulation(LES). The downstream flow type of SSAF is changed from axial flow to radial flow around the beginning of stall region at the aerodynamic performance curve. Axial mean velocity component largely grows around blade tip at the operating point of A to D, but transverse and vertical mean velocity components as well as Reynolds shear stresses highly develop around blade tip at the operating point of E to H. On the other hand, the peak value of turbulent kinetic energy developed around blade tip shows the highest at the operating point of E.

  • For proper installation, operation and performance of axial flow jet engines in aircrafts, the impacts and effects of inlet flow distortion in axial compressors have to be understood. Inlet distortion conditions may cause component-mismatch and instability problems known as rotating stall, and severe oscillations of mass flow rate called surge or a combination of both. Typical effects of this phenomenon include stresses and wear on the compressor blading, destruction of entire jet engines due to the failure of airfoil and mechanical failure or interruption of the combustion process. Therefore, it is important to study inlet flow distortion and its propagation effects to minimize and hence to prevent the occurrence of such calamity. The current novel integral method with parametric analysis signifies its validity to this field of research and offers much potential for further improvements. The present effort further indicates that this simple method may be flourishing in the problems of strongly distorted flow and propagating stall in axial compressor. It is therefore believe that using a more realistic and flexible velocity and pressure profiles could develop this approach further.

  • It has been recognized that the flow in the blade passage of an axial turbomachinery rotor is very complex and is influenced by various flow phenomena, of which the tip leakage flow passing through the gap between rotor blade tip and casing plays a significant role. The losses produced due to the existence of the clearance have been known to be a large contributor of the rotor overall losses. Despite several experimental studies on non-rotating blade in the cascade configuration, and on actual rotating blades, the detailed nature of the complex flow phenomena associated with tip leakage, however, remains largely unresolved. Thus, a single-stage compressor test rig was built and measurements were taken at upstream and downstream of the rotor of this compressor at the aerodynamics laboratory of University of New South Wales. A five-hole probe and a hot-wire probe were used to measure mean and fluctuating flow parameters. The results show that tip leakage losses rise rapidly beyond tip gap of 0.01 Furthermore, the present project also identifies the regions in the wake behind the rotor of the axial compressor where such losses are concentrated. These results should be useful in the better design of rotors for improved performance of axial compressor.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the performance improvement of axial-flow pump with guide vanes. Design optimization for guide vanes in an axial-flow pump has been studied through the implementation of a commercial CFD code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the axial-flow pump by designing the guide vanes. Geometric design variables were defined by the meridional plane and vane plane development of guide vanes. The effect of hub tip ratio analyzed the meridional plane of guide vanes. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs. The objective functions for guide vane geometric variables were defined as the total efficiency and the total head at the design flow rate. From the $2^k$ factorial design results, the important design variables were found and the performance was increased in comparison with the base design model.

  • The vibration of fuel rods in axial flow is a universally recognized issue within both engineering and academic communities due to its significant importance in ensuring structural safety. This paper aims to thoroughly investigate the stability and nonlinear vibration of a fuel rod subjected to axial flow in a newly designed high temperature gas cooled reactor. Considering the possible presence of thermal expansion and large deformation in practical scenarios, the thermal effect and geometric nonlinearity are modeled using the von Karman equation. By applying Hamilton's principle, we derive the comprehensive governing equation for this fluid-structure interaction system, which incorporates the quadratic nonlinear stiffness. To establish a connection between the fluid and structure aspects, we utilize the Galerkin method to solve the perturbation potential function, while employing mode expansion techniques associated with the structural analysis. Following convergence and validation analyses, we examine the stability of the structure under various conditions in detail, and also investigate the bifurcation behavior concerning the buckling amplitude and flow velocity. The findings from this research enhance the understanding of the underlying physics governing fuel rod behavior in axial flow under severe yet practical conditions, while providing valuable guidance for reactor design.

  • Experimental study was conducted to reveal the instability such as leakage flow and rotating stall in an axial flow fan. For this study, unsteady total pressure probe and multi-hole pressure probe were specially designed for measuring the flow field upstream and downstream of rotor. The measured pressure signal was analyzed by Single and Double Phase Locked Averaging Technique. From the result of total pressure fields at inlet and outlet of the rotor, the useful information on the structure of the stall cell in radial direction was provided. Also, detailed flow measurements were carried out with a specially designed high frequency multi-hole pressure probe, providing some insight to the leakage flow and their interation.

  • An application of contra-rotating rotors, in which a rear rotor is in tandem with a front one and these rotors rotate in the opposite direction each other, has been proposed against a demand for developing higher specific speed axial flow pump. One prototype rotors, which we have designed with a conventional method, has given the positive slope of head characteristic curve especially in the rear rotor. It is necessary to understand the internal flow behavior in the rear rotor to establish the design guideline for achieving higher and more reliable performance. In the present study, we carried out the experimental investigations of the internal flow field of the rear rotor, especially at the partial flow rate, by Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) for the main flow and the limiting streamlines observation on rotor surfaces for the boundary layer flows.

  • The paper describes an approach for measuring flow ripple generated by oil hydraulic axial piston pumps. Flow ripple has periodic waveforms due to the cyclic nature of a pump's operation, and interacts with the connected hydraulic systems such as pipes and components to produce a pressure ripple, also known as fluid-borne noise. It is indispensable to measure a flow ripple because increasing of vibration and noise caused by a flow ripple has become a point to be considered and has need of solving these problems. The measurement of flow ripple with high frequencies from oil hydraulic axial piston pumps is msde by using the remote instantaneous flow rate measurement method. As a result, the reverse flow through the relief groove in valve plate has an important effect upon a flow ripple generated by a pumps.

  • A throughflow analysis program for axial flow turbines is constructed, which can handle not only the two-dimensional multi-streamline (streamline curvature) method but also the one-dimensional mean line method. Calculations are performed for single stage and multi-stage axial flowturbines. For a wide operating range, the performance and flow field calculated by the present streamline curvature method are close enough to the test data. It is also revealed for the single stage turbine that the present analysis leads to far better correspondence with the experiment than other researchers" throughflow analyses. A special focus is put on the comparison of the results between the streamline curvature analysis and the mean line analysis. It is found that the mean line analysis can not predict the performance for highly off-designed conditions as accurately as the streamline curvature method, which shows the importance of considering the spanwise variation of loss and flow.
