Surface modifications like rib-roughening and displaced insert devices like the twisted tape are commonly used in applications such as compact heat exchangers and cooling systems. In this paper, regionally averaged heat transfer distributions in square channels with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Regionally averaged Nusselt number and channel averaged Nusselt number in turbulent air flows are presented for Reynold numbers from 8,900 to 29,000. We have obtained the following conclusions from the experimental study: 1) The local Nusselt number in the two-sided heated case is higher than that in the four-sided heated condition. 2) In the 4 heating wall channel with twisted tape inserts, Nusselt number based on bottom wall temperature is enhanced by 1.2 - 1.6 times if adding the axial interrupted ribs on the bottom wall only. 3) The twisted tape with interrupted ribs under the two-sided heating condition produces the highest heat transfer coefficient.

A suppression of turbulent fluid motion and a control of oxygen and dopants could be improved by application of magnetic field in Czochralski growth of silicon. The effect of an axial magnetic field on Czochralski system was numerically calculated. The fluid motions induced by temperature gradients and by crystal and crucible rotations were suppressed by magnetic force. The S/L interface was gradually flattened in proportion to the increase of magnetic field due to a reduced ascending velocity in the vicinity of center line. The t.emperature distributions in the melt at 8=0.3 Tesla were similar to those analyzed by the conduction heat transfer only. The dissipated amounts of heat flux from melt and crystal surfaces by Ar gas blowing was Jess than 3 %.

A detailed geometrical model of a Krško reactor core was developed using a Monte Carlo neutron transport code MCNP. The main goal of developing an MCNP core model is for it to be used in future research focused on ex-core calculations. A script called McCord was developed to generate MCNP input for an arbitrary fuel cycle configuration from the diffusion based core design package CORD-2, taking advantage of already available material and temperature data obtained in the nuclear core design process. The core model was used to calculate 3D power density profile inside the core. The applicability of the calculated power density distributions was tested by comparison to the CORD-2 calculations, which is regularly used for the nuclear core design calculation verification of the Krško core. For the hot zero power and hot full power states differences between MCNP and CORD-2 in the radial power density profile were <3%. When studying axial power density profiles the differences in axial offset were less than 2.3% for hot full power condition. To further confirm the applicability of the developed model, the measurements with in-core neutron detectors were compared to the calculations, where differences of 5% were observed.

In this study, a model of a flat plate solar collector using a heat pipe was manufactured and tested to investigate such operational characteristics of the present system of solar collector as start-up process, temperature distribution on the absorber plate and operation of the heat pipe. Moreover, collector efficiency was measured for 20-30 minutes of operation at various conditions of weather and the result was compared with that tested by Hill et. a. for a flat plate solar collector using direct circulation of coolant. Some results obtained in this study could be summarized as follows. (1) The required time for the initial start-up process was about 5-6 minutes, but the heat pipe began to operate as soon as the absorber plate was exposed to solar radiation. (2) On the absorber plate, the temperature distributions in axial direction maintained nearly constant, while temperature distributions in transversal direction showed smooth decrease with $3-5^{\cird}C$ along with solar radiation. (3) Thermal inertia of the collector system had a favorable effect to damp the turbulent variation of solar radiation. (4) The collector efficiency of the present system showed nearly the same tendency but a decrease of about 10% compared with that using direct circulation of coolant.

The characteristics of flows, temperatures, concentrations of the boron are numerically studied when uniform axial magnetic fields are applied in the Czechralski crucible. The to governing factors to the flow regimes are buoyancy, thermocapillarity, centrifugal forces, magnetic forces, diffusion coefficient and segregation coefficient of the boron. Since the concentration of the boron is so low that buoyancy effects are negligible, it cannot affect the flow and temperature fields. From the fact that the flow fields are rotationally symmetric, two velocity components in the meridional plane and the circumferential velocity are calculated together with the temperature in the steady state. Based on the known velocity and temperature distributions the unsteady concentration distributions of the boron are calculated. As the strength of the magnetic is increased, the flow velocities are decreased. Circumferential velocities are large near the crucible side-wall and in the region below the rotating crystal. Steep temperatures gradient near the edge of the rotating crystal causes the Marangoni convection. It has been found out that the convection characteristics affects the unsteady transport phenomena of the boron.
This paper is concerned with the wave propagation behavior of rotating functionally graded temperature-dependent nanoscale beams subjected to thermal loading based on nonlocal strain gradient stress field. Uniform, linear and nonlinear temperature distributions across the thickness are investigated. Thermo-elastic properties of FG beam change gradually according to the Mori-Tanaka distribution model in the spatial coordinate. The nanobeam is modeled via a higher-order shear deformable refined beam theory which has a trigonometric shear stress function. The governing equations are derived by Hamilton's principle as a function of axial force due to centrifugal stiffening and displacement. By applying an analytical solution and solving an eigenvalue problem, the dispersion relations of rotating FG nanobeam are obtained. Numerical results illustrate that various parameters including temperature change, angular velocity, nonlocality parameter, wave number and gradient index have significant effect on the wave dispersion characteristics of the understudy nanobeam. The outcome of this study can provide beneficial information for the next generation researches and exact design of nano-machines including nanoscale molecular bearings and nanogears, etc.
The thermalehydraulic characteristics for the CANadian Deuterium Uranium Flexible (CANFLEX)-burnable poison (BP) fuel channel, which is loaded with a BP at the center ring based on the CANFLEX-RU (recycled uranium) fuel channel, are evaluated and compared with that of standard 37-element and CANFLEX-NU (natural uranium) fuel channels. The distributions of fuel temperature and critical channel power for the CANFLEX-BP fuel channel are calculated using the NUclear Heat Transport CIRcuit Thermohydraulics Analysis Code (NUCIRC) code for various creep rate and burnup. CANFLEX-BP fuel channel has been revealed to have a lower fuel temperature compared with that of a standard 37-element fuel channel, especially for high power channels. The critical channel power of CANFLEX-BP fuel channel has increased by about 10%, relative to that of a standard 37-element fuel channel for 380 channels in a core, and has higher value relative to that of the CANFLEX-NU fuel channel except the channels in the outer core. This study has shown that the use of a BP is feasible to enhance the thermal performance by the axial heat flux distribution, as well as the improvement of the reactor physical safety characteristics, and thus the reactor safety can be improved by the use of BP in a CANDU reactor.

Characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been studied numerically in a square duct with a periodic pressure gradient. The flow in a duct was assumed to be fully developed and constant heat flux was imposed at the surfaces of a square duct. The distributions of axial velocity and time-space averaged temperature are investigated with angular velocity and amplitude ratio at a given Reynolds number 1000. When the periodic pressure gradient was imposed axially in a duct, the reverse flow may be occurred near the duct wall. The magnitude of this reverse flow increases as the amplitude ratio increases or as the angular frequency decreases. In the ranges of the amplitude ratio and the angular velocity in present investigation, the ratio of the periodic time space averaged temperature to the nonperiodic space averaged temperature has been found to be greater than one. This means that the cooling effect at the duct walls deteriorates with a periodic situation compared with nonperiodic one.
Constitutive relation of thermoelasto-plastic material undergoing phase transformation during quenching process were developed on the basic of continuum thermodynamics. The metallic structure, temperature and residual stresses distributions were numerically calculated by the finite element technique. The metallic structure were defined by transformation from austenite to pearlite and characterized as a fuction of thermal history and mixture rule of phase. On the distribution of thermal stress along the radial direction, axial and tangential stresses are compressive in the surface, and tential in the inner part. Radial stress is tensile in the whole body. The reversion of residual stress takes plase at 11.5~15.5mm from the center.

The transient magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generalized Couette flow with heat transfer through a porous medium of an electrically conducting, viscous, incompressible fluid bounded by two parallel insulating porous plates is studied in the presence of uniform suction and injection and a heat source considering the Hall effect. A uniform and constant pressure gradient is imposed in the axial direction and an externally applied uniform magnetic field as well as a uniform suction and injection are applied in the direction perpendicular to the plates. The two plates are kept at different but constant temperatures while the Joule and viscous dissipations are included in the energy equation. The effect of the Hall current, the porosity of the medium and the uniform suction and injection on both the velocity and temperature distributions is investigated.
