Small-sized axial fans are used as air cooler for electric equipments. But there is a strong demand for higher power of fans according to the increase of quantity of heat from electric devices. Therefore, higher rotational speed design is conducted, although, it causes the deterioration of efficiency and the increase of noise. Then the adoption of contrarotating rotors for the small-sized axial fan is proposed for the improvement of performance. In the present paper, the performance curves of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan with 100mm diameter are shown and the velocity distributions at a partial flow rate at the inlet and the outlet of each front and rear rotor are clarified with experimental results. Furthermore, the flow conditions between front and rear rotors of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan are investigated by numerical analysis results and causes of the performance deterioration of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan at the partial flow rate is discussed.

In the Korean subway station, three types of pre-filters, which include auto filter, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and auto cleaning demister, are widely used. However, these devices have some problems such as the difficulty of maintenance and high operating cost. In this study, axial-flow cyclone separator was employed as a pre-filter inside a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed on a single unit axial-flow cyclone and coupled unit axial-flow cyclone. Calculated and measured pressure drop of the designed axial-flow cyclone were found be comparable to other types of pre-filters and the observed cut-off diameter was less than 10 micron. Considering lower operating and maintenance cost, axial-flow cyclone was proved to be a better solution as a pre-filter.
The development of efficient systems for water quality improvement for water sources such as lakes, dams and reservoirs has become a necessity to provide not only a cleaner and safer water to the urban society, but also to provide a cleaner and safer environment for the aquatic organisms living in lakes, dams and reservoirs. This study concentrates on the outlet design and internal flow analysis of an axial flow pump used in a floating type water treatment system completely powered by renewable energy source. The treatment system is designed to raise water from depths of about 3~5m up to the water surface where it is naturally mixed with air as it is released back to the reservoir. The outlet of a typical axial flow pump is modified to suit the floating type water mixer. The performance of the axial flow pump is studied by investigating the internal flow of the system. Results show that the change in outlet shape does not alter the performance of the original pump at the maximum efficiency point as long as the cross sectional area of inlet is the same as the outlet. The axial pump for floating type water treatment system has good cavitation performance in the whole flow passage.

The flow characteristics in the blade passage and in the wake region of a low speed axial flow fan have been investigated by experimental analysis using a rotating hot-wire sensor for design and off-design operating conditions. The results show that the tip leakage vortex is moved upstream when flow rate is decreased, thus disturbing the formation of wake flow near the rotor tip. The tip leakage vortex interfaces with blade pressure surface, and results in high velocity fluctuation near the pressure surface. From axial velocity distributions downstream of the fan rotor, large axial velocity decay near the rotor tip is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Although the wake flow downstream of the rotor blade is clearly measured at all operating conditions, the trough of the high velocity fluctuation due to Karmann vortex street in the wake flow is mainly observed at a higher flow condition than the design flow rate.

The paper describes an approach for measuring delivery flow ripple generated by oil hydraulic axial piston pumps. In order to reduce pressure ripple which cause to undesirable noise. vibration and fatigue in hydraulic systems it is indispensible measure a delivery flow ripple from pumps. Since the flow ripple measurement of flow pumps is independent of the dynamic characteristics of the connected hydraulic circuit the measurement of flow ripple is most suitable for pump fluid-borne noise rating. The measurement of flow ripple with high frequencies from axial piston pumps is made by applying the remote instantaneous flow rate measurement method which is based on the dynamic characteristics between pressure and flow rate in hydraulic pipeline. The measured flow ripple waveforms are influenced by the configuration of V-shaped triangular relief groove in the valve plate. It can be seen that the appropriate relief groove in valve plate reduces the pressure and flow ripple amplitude and frequency spectrum for high harmonics.
Measurements of the leakage flow in the shrouded cavity were performed in axial compressor cascades at $Re=2.6{\times}10^5$. This paper describes the effects of the leakage flow tangential velocity on kinematics of the leakage flow in the shrouded cavity and consequent overall loss and exit flow turning at stator blade row downstream. Flow data and flow visualization images consistently indicate that leakage flow circumferentially migrates 2, 4 and 5 blade passages in the direction of rotation for ${\upsilon}_y/c=0.09$, 0.35 and 0.45, respectively where ${\upsilon}_y$ is the leakage tangential velocity and c is the mainstream velocity. The leakage flow contracts to a jet across the seal-tooth resulting in an increase in the leakage axial velocity-doubling the leakage axial velocity in upstream cavity compared to that in the downstream cavity. Consequently, two flow regions are distinguished before and after the seal-tooth. As increasing the leakage tangential velocity, the overall loss downstream of stator blade row decreases and the exit flow turning in the range of span. from the hub endwall to 15% increases while the decreases in the flow turning from 15% to 30% span is observed.
Three-dimensional vortical flow and separated flow topology near the casing wall in an axial flow fan having two different tip clearances have been investigated by a Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. The simulation shows that the tip leakage vortex formed close to the leading edge of the blade tip on suction side grows in the streamwise direction. On the casing wall, a separation line is formed upstream of the leakage vortex center due to the interference between the leakage vortex and main flow. The reverse flow is observed between the separation line and the attachment line generated downstream of the trailing edge, and increased with enlarging tip clearance. The patterns of a leakage velocity vector including a leakage flow rate are also analyzed according to two tip clearances. It is noted that the understanding of the distribution of a limiting streamline on the casing wall is very important to grasp the characteristics of the vortical flow in the axial flow fan.
In this study, the experimental study has carried out to select pitch angle on the backward flow in an axial fan that has adjustable pitch blades. With the change of pitch angle of axial fan with adjustable blade, air flow rate, pressure and air flow direction can be changed. Because of this merit, adjustable axial fan can be used in the backward flow. For the selection of the backward flow pitch angle, fan performance test method is selected by KS B 6311. Dynamic pressure, static pressure, electric current and voltage are measured in each pitch angles of axial fan that are $36^{\circ}$, $-16^{\circ}$, $-21^{\circ}$, $-26^{\circ}$, $-31^{\circ}$ and $-36^{\circ}$. In the result of test, fan performance curves at several pitch angle has been investigated. Finally, pitch angle of $-26^{\circ}$ has been selected to get largest flow rate at backward flow situation.

A review on the design analysis of an axial-flow turbine is presented. Followed by a brief introduction to the fundamentals on an axial-flow turbine, a design procedure is described with a sample design of one for a small turbo-jet engine. Design procedure is composed of two parts: one-dimensional analysis of three-dimensional effects based on radial equilibrium theory. The method described herein is so simple and rapid that it can be applied to the preliminary design analysis of turbo-machinery equipped with axial-flow turbines.
