Reducing the losses of the tip clearance flow is one of the keys in an unshrouded centrifugal compressor design and development because tip clearances are large in relation to the span of the blades and also centrifugal compressors produce a sufficiently large pressure rise in single stage. This problem is more acute for a low flow high-pressure ratio impeller design. The large tip clearance would cause flow separations, and as a result it would drop both the efficiency and surge margin. Thus a design of a high efficiency and wide operation range low flow coefficient centrifugal compressor is a great challenge. This paper describes a recent development of high efficiency and wide surge margin low flow coefficient centrifugal compressor. A viscous turbomachinery optimal design method developed by the authors for axial flow machine was further extended and used in the centrifugal compressor design. The compressor has three main parts: impeller, a low solidity diffuser and volute. The tip clearance is under a special consideration in this design to allow impeller insensitiveness to the clearance. A patented three-dimensional low solidity diffuser design method is used and applied to this design. The compressor test results demonstrated to be successful to extend the low solidity diffusers to high-pressure ratio compressor. The compressor stage performance showed the total to static efficiency of the compressor being about 85% and stability range over 35%. The test results are in good agreement with the design.
In this study, a program for the off-design performance prediction of multi-stage axial-compressors is developed based on stage-stacking method. To account for the increased losses at off-design conditions, generalized performance curve is applied. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the choice of generalized performance curve and stator exit angle. For this purpose, we tested various generalized performance curves and stator exit angles. In conclusion, Muir's pressure coefficient curve gives a good prediction results regardless of the efficiency curve for a low-stage compressors. On the other hand, for high-stage compressors, The combination of Muir's pressure coefficient curve and Stone's efficiency curve gives a optimistic results. Stator exit angle has a small effect on overall performance curve.
In this study, to investigate the effect of the generalized performance curve on the performance prediction and to find the optimal ones, a systematic study is performed. For this purpose, we compared the influence of the stage performance curves with experimental data in multi-stage axial compressors. As a result, it is discovered that the optimal generalized performance curves vary according to the number of the stages in compressors. And we found that for a low-stage compressors, Muir's pressure coefficient curve gives the best prediction results at design rotational frequency regardless of the efficiency curve. On the other hand, for high-stage compressors, Stone's pressure coefficient curve gives the optimistic results about the performance prediction at design rotational frequency.

In this work, a modified stage-stacking method for the performance prediction of multi-stage axial flow compressors is proposed. The method is based on a simultaneous calculation of all interstage variables (temperature, pressure, flow velocity) instead of the conventional sequential stage-by-stage scheme. The method is also very useful in simulating the effect of changing angles of the inlet guide vane and stator vanes on the compressor operating characteristics. Generalized stage performance curves are used in presenting the performance characteristics of each stage. General assumptions enable determination of flow path data and stage design performance. Performance of various real compressors is predicted and comparison between prediction and field data validates the usefulness of the present method.

For proper installation, operation and performance of axial flow jet engines in aircrafts, the impacts and effects of inlet flow distortion in axial compressors have to be understood. Inlet distortion conditions may cause component-mismatch and instability problems known as rotating stall, and severe oscillations of mass flow rate called surge or a combination of both. Typical effects of this phenomenon include stresses and wear on the compressor blading, destruction of entire jet engines due to the failure of airfoil and mechanical failure or interruption of the combustion process. Therefore, it is important to study inlet flow distortion and its propagation effects to minimize and hence to prevent the occurrence of such calamity. The current novel integral method with parametric analysis signifies its validity to this field of research and offers much potential for further improvements. The present effort further indicates that this simple method may be flourishing in the problems of strongly distorted flow and propagating stall in axial compressor. It is therefore believe that using a more realistic and flexible velocity and pressure profiles could develop this approach further.
The ruptured blade which is rotating at high speed can damage severely the all stage compressor blades and the turbine components. If the shattered blades flow downstream inside the turbine parts, then the turbine blades and vanes can be damaged. The small parts of shattered blades which are flowed into the turbine parts pass through without any damages in the leading edge of the first stage stationary blades. Then they bump against the convex side of the leading edge of the first stage moving blades and the trailing edge of the first stage stationary blades repeatedly. The debris of shattered blades may plug the cooling holes in the turbine blades and vanes. The dent damage and the coating delamination could be also occurred by the debris of shattered blades flowed downstream inside the combustion liner and the transition piece. This paper analyzes the influence on the turbine components and the damage mechanism and characteristics in case of the damaged blade of the multiple-stage axial flow compressor.
Numerical simulations on a single stage transonic compressor which is developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute are carried out and their results are compared with experimental data for cross validations. Comparisons between experimental data and numerical simulation results show good agreements on a performance curve, static pressure and total pressure distributions. CFD results show that there is a clear interaction between tip leakage flow and normal shock in the rotor passage. Tip leakage flows are almost dissipated after the strong normal shock and it forms a strong recirculation near the blade tip. Also a large separation region grows on the suction surface just after the normal shock. As the pressure ratio and blade loading increase, the normal shock line moves upstream and it starts to deviate from the blade leading edge. Then the tip leakage flow does not overcome the strong adverse pressure gradient and flow blockage originated from the tip recirculation region. As a result, the tip leakage flow heads for the neighboring blade leading edge, which results in a compressor stall.

Behaviors of surges appearing near the stall stagnation boundaries in various fashions in systems of a single-stage compressor and flow-path systems were studied analytically and were tried to put to order. Deep surges, which enclose the stall point in the pressure-mass flow plane, tend to have either near-resonant surge frequencies or subharmonic ones. The subharmonic surge is a multiple-loop one containing, for example, in a (1/2) subharmonic one, a deep surge loop and a mild surge loop, the latter of which does not enclose the stall point, staying only within the stalled zone. Both loops have nearly equal time periods, respectively, resulting in a (1/2) subharmonic surge frequency as a whole. The subharmonic surges are found to appear in a narrow zone neighboring the stall stagnation boundary. In other words, they tend to appear in the final stage of the stall stagnation process. It should be emphasized further that the stall stagnation initiates fundamentally at the situation where a volume-modified reduced resonant-surge frequency becomes coincident with that for the stagnation boundary conditions, where the reduced frequency is defined by the acoustical resonance frequency in the flow-path system, the delivery flow-path length and the compressor tip speed, modified by the sectional area ratio and the effect of the stalling pressure ratio. The real surge frequency turns from the resonant frequency to either near-resonant one or subharmonic one, and finally to stagnation condition, for the large-amplitude conditions, caused by the non-linear self-excitation mechanism of the surge.

The study on the measurement method of the aerodynamic performance of a turbo compressor was conducted. It is well known that the performance and the efficiency of the compressor can be calculated from the temperature and pressure distribution in each stage of the compressor. In the past Pitot tubes and thermocouples were used to measure pressure and temperature respectively, and recently pressure and temperature rake is used in order to decrease the measuring time and the number of measurement. The miniature total pressure rake which is available in the compressor with a small axial gap is designed and is under development.

In this study, numerical method, stage stacking method based on the result of numerical method and scaled stage stacking method have been applied to predict the performance of a multi-stage axial compressor with inlet guide vane. The results obtained through three different methods for off-design conditions were compared with performance test data. And the effect the angle of variable inlet guide vane was also investigated. The three-dimensional numerical simulation has been performed by using flow analysis program, $FLUENT^{TM}$ 6.3 and the performance prediction based on the stage stacking method has been performed with compressor analysis code from NASA.
