Physical Therapists' Awareness of Dementia and Attitude

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the personal characteristics of physical therapists, dementia awareness and dementia attitude, and to find out what relationship is there between personal characteristics and dementia awareness and dementia attitude. Methods: Participants in this study surveyed physical therapists who are members of the Association of Korean Physical Therapists on their awareness of dementia, and conducted online surveys from January 28 to February 27, 2021. The survey questions used in the survey consisted of 29 questions in total, including 9 general characteristics of the participant, 10 questions on perception of dementia, and 10 attitudes toward dementia. All 104 participants were surveyed, and 100 surveys were analyzed, excluding 4 surveys with insufficient responses. Results: In this study, the correct answer rate for all items in the dementia awareness sub-item was 65%, and the dementia attitude-related sub-items were generally positive. However, there was no significant correlation between personal characteristics such as gender, age, educational background, treatment target, treatment experience and dementia awareness, and no correlation with dementia attitude was significant. Conclusion: Regardless of personal characteristics such as gender, age, treatment target, and treatment experience, a positive attitude and correct recognition of dementia can improve the quality of treatment with dementia patients and increase the reliability of patients and caregivers.

Survey on the Gyeonggi-do Physical Therapists' in Awareness of National Responsibility for Dementia (경기도 물리치료사의 치매 국가책임제 인식도 조사연구)

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to provide basic data for the association's policy management and to improve the activity areas by investigating Gyeonggi-do physical therapists' recognition of the national responsibility for dementia. Methods : A total of 1,839 physical therapists participated in this survey, and the data from a total of 29 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 windows. Results : Among the physical therapists in Gyeonggi-do, 61.1 % had low awareness of the national responsibility for dementia, and the recognition of the center for dementia was also low. On the other hand, there was a remarkably high opinion that the physical therapist was a necessary workforce, and positive responses to dementia-related work and education participation were also high, 51.9 % and 68.5 %, respectively. Those with a high educational background, annual salary, clinical experience, or dementia-related institutions, such as nursing homes and physical therapy, had a high awareness of "dementia national responsibility", awareness of "center for dementia" and "participation in dementia-related work and education". On the other hand, "work participation" and "education participation" were found to be inversely related to age and clinical experience. Conclusion : Physical therapists based in Gyeonggi-do showed an awareness of dementia policy. This result will help the association's policy management and protect the physical therapist's rights and interests.

Research of the necessity and awareness of the oriental physical therapy (한방물리치료 필요성과 인지도 연구)

  • Background : With its research and analysis on the actual condition of the oriental medical treatment and the oriental physical therapy and With its research on the physical therapists' awareness of the oriental physical therapy, Providing the basic information for the physical therapy development and the national heath improvement in the future. Methods : This research had performed random sampling survey of 200 physical therapists in Busan city and had excluded 4 with insincere answers or some ommission of survey contents. Result : The first most frequent disease type of the oriental medical center inpatients is paralytic sequela, the second is lumbago, the next is apoplexy in order. The first most frequent disease type of the outpatients is lumbago, the second is stiffness in the shoulder, the next is the sprain in order. And, it came out that most of frequent disease are required the physical therapy. Conclusion : This research results show high demands as well as the necessity of the oriental physical therapy. It seems physical therapy association needs very serious examination on the oriental physical therapy execution.

An Investigation Study on the Role and Performance Ability of Physical Therapists in the Community Care System for Elderly

  • Purpose: A survey was conducted to investigate the role, priority, and awareness of physical therapists in the community care system for the elderly. Methods: Nine hundred ninety-three physical therapists were invited to an online survey from 1st to 30th June 2020. Results: While the awareness of physical therapists for the community care system for the elderly was found to be low, the role priority and performance ability were found to be high. Fall training scored the highest for the job duties of physical therapists, and functional training scored the highest for the performance ability of physical therapists. For the role priority by the education status regarding the community care system, the participants who received the education program showed higher scores in the performance ability than those who did not. For the role priority and performance ability according to the education levels, higher education levels resulted in higher scores in both outcomes. Regarding the clinical experience, low scores were found in the participants with less than five years of experience. Conclusion: Physical therapy establishes itself as an essential area of expertise in the community care system for the elderly. Therefore, these results can be utilized in developing a model for Korean community care for the elderly.

A Study on the Job Recognition and Career Preference of Physical Therapy Major College Students. (물리치료 전공 대학생의 직업인식도와 진로선호도에 관한 연구)

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to provide students with the opportunity to thing about the career of physical therapist and career after graduation through the survey on the perception and career preference of physical therapy service for college students majoring in physical therapy. and to provide guidance for employment guidance. Methods: A total of 271 students majoring in physical therapy at A University in Gyeonggi-do were surveyed. After the preliminary explanation of the questionnaire, the questionnaire was distributed and prepared. of the 271 data, 270 were collected and used as the final analysis data. Results: The results of this study were as follows: 1) The higher the age and the higher the grade, the higher the perceived job recognition rate of the agencies. (p<.05), respectively. In other occupational awareness surveys, there was no significant difference in gender, age, and grade (p>.05). 2) In the preference survey, men preferred orthopedic physical therapy and female preferred neurological physical therapy. The preference for the desired institution after graduation was highest for general hospitals by gender, age, and grade. Conclusion: In conclusion, the higher the age and grade, the higher was the physical therapy profession awareness and overall had a positive perception of physical therapy jobs.

Study on the Awareness and the Necessity of Home and Visiting Physical Therapy (가정 및 방문 물리치료의 인식도와 필요성에 대한 연구)

  • PURPOSE: This study aims to provide basic materials to re-establish terms and to build the institutional framework for the home and visiting physical therapy. METHODS: For such purpose of the study conducted the research that targeted the physical therapists, who were working at the rehabilitation hospital located in Gyeonggi-do as for the survey questionnaires as to the need and awareness of development of the adequate insurance fee of home physical therapy and visiting physical therapy. RESULTS: The survey result shows the awareness is low on the term separation in referring the home physical therapy and the visiting physical therapy. On the question regarding the performance obligation in the current system of the home and the visiting physical therapies, the answers for the recognition are shown to be 58% and 88.1% while no significant differences according to ages and working periods are found in all questions (p>.05). In the meanwhile, on the question regarding necessities of the home and the visiting physical therapies, answers agreeing the necessity is shown as 96.3%. And, on the question regarding the expected effect, the score shows to be very high with 40.5 points out of 50 points and significant differences according to the age and the working period (p<.05). CONCLUSION: It directly reflects the result, as the age and the working period are longer, the necessity shows to be higher.

Research to the recognition and the need of development for proper insurance costs for Home Physical Therapy, Visiting Physical Therapy and School of Physical Therapy (가정.방문물리치료 및 학교물리치료의 적정 보험수가 개발의 필요성과 인식에 대한 연구)

  • Background : This study aims to examine the awareness as to the terminological comprehension about the home and visiting physical therapy and the school physical therapy and the need for development as to the associated insurance costs. And the purpose of the study is to provide the basic data in terms of the preparation process for implementation of the related system. Methods : The study conducted the research that targeted the physical therapists, who were working at the rehabilitation hospital located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do as for the survey questionnaires as to the need and awareness of development of the adequate insurance fee of home physical therapy, visiting physical therapy and school physical therapy. Result : Even though the level of understanding for the terminologies was low, the need for development of insurance fee for home physical therapy, visiting physical therapy and school physical therapy was shown to be high regardless of age and work experience. However, there was not a statistical difference in accordance with age and work experience (p>.05). Conclusion : It directly reflects the result, which hopes home physical therapy, visiting physical therapy and school physical therapy to enter immediately into the frame of system.

Effect of Physiotherapeutic Intervention Using TECAR Therapy on Pain Self-Awareness and Hip Joint Function in Hip Impingement Syndrome: A Case Study

  • PURPOSE: The current case study focuses on identifying the effects of the independent application of TECAR therapy and physiotherapeutic intervention using TECAR therapy on pain self-awareness and hip joint function in patients with hip impingement syndrome caused by nonstructural changes. Subjects: The research subject was a 34-year-old woman struggling with acute pain in her left hip, difficulty in actively moving the hip, and a problem in its overall function. METHODS: The subject's pain awareness and hip joint function were measured using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and passive range of motion (PROM), respectively. The experimental intervention was carried out in 24 sessions of 16 minutes each, three times a week, for eight weeks. RESULTS: The VAS score decreased to 0 cm on the post-test from 4.3 cm, 6.5 cm, and 7.2 cm in the pre-test at the rest, standing, and gait positions, respectively. The index of PROM measured hip joint flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, external rotation, and passive straight leg raise. The values increased to 122.5°, 24.5°, 78°, 33°, 65°, 42°, and 96.5° in the post-test compared to 88.5°, 15°, 39°, 21.5°, 23°, 22°, and 46.5° in the pre-test, respectively. CONCLUSION: TECAR therapy and physiotherapeutic intervention using TECAR can help reduce pain and enhance the hip joint function in patients with hip impingement syndrome.

Survey on the Perceptions of Tele-Physical Therapy of Health and Non-Health Majors in Their 20s (20대 보건계열과 비 보건계열 전공자의 원격물리치료에 대한 인식도 조사)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of tele-physical therapy of health and non-health majors. It can provide basic research data for the provision of medical services in the future by identifying the level of awareness of the need for tele-physical therapy and the factors that affect it. Methods: The subjects were adults aged 20 to 29 in Korea, with 199 participants consisting of 83 health majors and 116 non-health majors. The survey was conducted over a period of 14 days. The survey comprised 19 questions, including 10 questions about general characteristics and 9 questions about tele-physical therapy recognition. The results were statistically analyzed using a statistical package program. Results: There was a significant difference between the two groups regarding the recognition of tele-physical therapy, with an average of 2.64 points in health majors and an average of 1.71 points in non-health majors, showing a low overall score. There was no significant difference in perception of the necessity of tele-physical therapy, with an average of 3.71 points in health majors and an average of 3.49 points in non-health majors, showing a high score, which was defined as a score of 3 or higher. Conclusion: Health and non-health majors showed low awareness of tele-physical therapy. A high level of perceived necessity for tele-physical therapy was shown. In the perception of tele-physical therapy in health majors, 'awareness', 'health improvement', and 'convenience' affect the perception of the necessity of tele-physical therapy. In non-health majors, 'knowledge and skills', 'health improvement', 'expected treatment satisfaction', and 'resolving restrictions on hospital visits' affect the perception of the necessity of tele-physical therapy.
