  • We consider an optimal antenna weighting scheme for a closed-loop transmit antenna diversity system in Rayleigh fading channels. We derive a closed-form expression for the optimal transmitter weights that minimize the average bit error rate (BER) subject to fixed average and peak transmit power constraints. It is shown that the peak power limitation degrades the average BER performance more significantly as the available average power and/or the number of transmit antennas increase.

  • One of the maindisadvantages of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) problem. To reduce PAPR and improve the error performance of the OFDM signal over a fading channel, an OFDM system combining an Adaptive Symbol Selection Scheme (ASSS) and channel estimation can be used. Because of the side information of ASSS, however, the data rate decreases in the conventional ASSS OFDM system. In this letter, to overcome this impairment, we propose a technique to transmit side information by using pilot tones, and demonstrate that the proposed technique can give reasonable bit error rate (BER) performance.

  • This paper proposes a common interleaving method associated with independent channel-encoding among transmitter antenna branches in orthogonal frequency and code division multiplexing based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing to achieve an extremely high throughput such as 1 Gbps using a 100 MHz bandwidth. This paper also investigates the average packet error rate performance as a function of the average received signal energy per bit-to-background noise power spectrum density ratio $(E_b/N_0)$. We found that the loss in the required average received $E_b/N_0$ of the proposed method is only within approximately 0.3 dB in up to a 12-path Rayleigh fading channel, using 16QAM and Turbo coding with a coding rate of 5/6. We also clarify that even for a large fading correlation among antenna branches, 1 Gbps is still possible by increasing the transmission power. Therefore, the proposed method reduces the processing rate to 1/4 in the turbo decoder with only a slight loss in the required average received $E_b/N_0$.

  • In this paper, we compare the bit-error-rate performance of the fast-frequency-hopped spread-spectrum multiple-access (FFH/SSMA) and direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems in a Rician fading channel. Each system has a same data rate, bandwidth and transmits over a Rician fading channel. The results illustrate tradoffs in performance between the FFH/SSMA and DS/CDMA systems as a function of the parameters such as average signal to noise ratio and processing gain. The performance of the FFH/SSMA system is shown to be less sensitive to the change of fading environments, while the change of processing gain and average signal to noise ratio gives considerable affect to the FFH/SSMA system compared with the DS/CDMA system. Without respect to the change of system parameters, for most of Rician fading channels (except non-fading channel), FFH/SSMA system gives better performance than DS/CDMA system in BBR < 10$\^$-3/.

  • The performance of a MIMO system with adaptive modulation (AM) and space-time coding over Ricean fading channels for perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) is presented. The fading gain value is partitioned into a number of regions by which the modulation is adapted according to the region the fading gain falls in. Under a target bit error rate (BER) constraint, the switching thresholds for AM are given. Based on these results, we derive the calculation formulae of the theoretical spectrum efficiency (SE) and average BER. As a result, closed-form SE expression and accurate BER expression are respectively obtained. Besides, using the approximation of complementary error function, a tightly closed-form approximation of average BER is also derived to simplify the calculation of accurate theoretical BER. Computer simulation shows that the theoretical SE and BER are in good agreement with the corresponding simulation, and the approximate BER is also close to the accurate one. The results show that the AM scheme in Ricean fading channel provides better SE than that in Rayleigh fading channel due to the direct-path propagation, and has performance degradation in SE and BER for imperfect CSI.

  • High PAPR (peak-to-average power ratio) is a major drawback of OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) signals. In this paper, a modified SLM (selective mapping) technique that uses erasure decoding of RS (Reed-Solomon) codes is presented. At the transmitter a set of phase sequences are multiplied such that some portions of check symbols in RS-coded OFDM data blocks are phase-rotated. At the receiver, RS decoding is performed with the phase-rotated check symbols being treated as erasures. Hence, there is no need to send side information about the phase sequence selected to transmit for the lowest PAPR. In addition, the estimation process for the selected phase sequence is no longer needed at the receiver, leading to improvement in terms of complexity and performance. To evaluate the performance of this technique, the CCDF (complementary cumulative distribution function) of PAPR, the BER (bit error rate) and the decoding failure probability are compared with those of the previous SLM techniques.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) is a multicarrier modulation(MCM) system that enables high-speed communications using multiple carriers and has advantages of power and spectral efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to complement the existing shortcomings and to design an efficient MCM system. The proposed system uses the inverse discrete wavelet transform(IDWT) operation instead of the inverse fast Fourier transform(IFFT) operation. The bit error rate(BER), spectral efficiency, and peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) performance were compared with the conventional OFDM system through the OFDM system design based on wavelet transform. Our results showed that the conventional OFDM and Wavelet-OFDM exhibited the same BER performance, and that the Wavelet-OFDM using the discrete Meyer wavelet had the same spectral efficiency as the conventional OFDM. In addition, all systems of Wavelet-OFDM based on various wavelets confirm a PAPR performance lower than that of conventional OFDM.

  • In this paper, we propose a CCP (Companding Combined with Predistorter) scheme that maintains BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of systems, while effectively reducing PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) signals, independent of nonlinear property of HPAs (High Power Amplifiers). The proposed CCP scheme combines the conventional companding scheme proposed by the authors with the predistorter, in order to prevent degradation of BER performance caused by signal distortion from nonlinear property of the HPA and the compression property of the companding scheme. Hence, the proposed scheme effectively reduces the PAPR and simultaneously maintains the BER performance, independent of nonlinear property of the HPA. Simulation results showed that the proposed CCP scheme provides the lowest total degradation for all the modulations, when comparing with the companding scheme proposed by Wang and the clipping scheme.

  • In satellite communications, a modulation technique with a low peak-to-average power ratio, high transmission efficiency, and low bit error rate(BER) is required, and differential amplitude and phase shift keying(DAPSK) modulation technique has been appraised as a technology that meets these requirements. However, because conventional DAPSK modulation uses a regular constellation diagram, the Euclidean distance between the symbols in the inner concentric circles of the constellation are quite short. Such a characteristic degrades the BER. In this paper, we propose a DAPSK system that uses an efficient constellation assignment to improve the performance of existing DAPSK systems and evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. From the simulation results, we confirm that the proposed 16-DAPSK system achieves an signal-to-noise ratio gain of 0.8 dB over the conventional approach at a BER condition of $10^{-4}$ when the number of symbols used in the symbol detector of the receiver is 2.

  • OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system is robust to frequency selective fading and narrowband interference in high-speed data communications. However, an OFDM signal consists of a number of independently modulated subcarriers, which can give a large PAPR (peak-to-Average Power Ratio) when added up coherently. In this paper, we propose a new PAPR reduction method using Adaptive Sine Soft Clipping (ASS Clipping) to solve the PAPR problem. The proposed method reduce the PAPR and out-of-band spectrum by cutting down high frequency components. From computer simulation results, we analyze the PSD (Power Spectral Density) and BER (Bit Error Rate) performance as well as PAPR reduction performance when the ASS Clipping method is applied to OFDM system.
