The aim of this study was to identify strain KCOM 1265 isolated from subgingival plaque at the species level by comparing 16S ribosomal RNA gene (16S rDNA) and genome sequences. The whole genome of strain KCOM 1265 was extracted using the phenol-chloroform extraction method. 16S rDNA was amplified using polymerase chain reaction and sequenced using the dideoxy chain termination method. Pairwise genome comparison was performed using average nucleotide identity (ANI) and genome-to-genome distance (GGD) analyses. The data showed that the percent similarity of 16S rDNA sequence of strain KCOM 1265 was 99.6% as compared with those of Fusobacterium polymorphum ATCC 10953T and Fusobacterium hwasookii KCOM 1249T. The ANI values of strain KCOM 1265 with F. polymorphum ATCC 10953T and F. hwasookii KCOM 1249T were 95.8% and 93.0%, respectively. The GGD values of strain KCOM 1265 with F. polymorphum ATCC 10953T and F. hwasookii KCOM 1249T were 63.9% and 49.6%, respectively. These results indicate that strain KCOM 1265 belongs to F. polymorphum.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quantitative strain elastography of tongue carcinoma using intraoral ultrasonography. Materials and Methods: Two patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) who underwent quantitative strain elastography for the diagnosis of tongue lesions using intraoral ultrasonography were included in this prospective study. Strain elastography was performed using a linear 14 MHz transducer (Aplio 300; Canon Medical Systems, Otawara, Japan). Manual light compression and decompression of the tongue by the transducer was performed to achieve optimal and consistent color coding. The variation in tissue strain over time caused by the compression exerted using the probe was displayed as a strain graph. The integrated strain elastography software allowed the operator to place circular regions of interest (ROIs) of various diameters within the elastography window, and automatically displayed quantitative strain (%) for each ROI. Quantitative indices of the strain (%) were measured for normal tissues and lesions in the tongue. Results: The average strain of normal tissue and tongue SCC in a 50-year-old man was 1.468% and 0.000%, respectively. The average strain of normal tissue and tongue SCC in a 59-year-old man was 1.007% and 0.000%, respectively. Conclusion: We investigated the quantitative strain elastography of tongue carcinoma using intraoral ultrasonography. Strain elastography using intraoral ultrasonography is a promising technique for characterizing and differentiating normal tissues and SCC in the tongue.
Limestone bodies under the tectonic environment have experienced various tectonic processes, and also changed the stress state. In this study, calcite twins found in limestones of the Joseon Supergroup and Pyeongan Supergroup in the northeastern part of the Ogcheon Belt, South Korea were measured, then the paleostress (i.e., the maximum shortening axis) was reconstructed using the new calcite strain gauge (NCSG) technique. The average twin thickness and average twin intensity increase as the total twin strain increases. We utilize the appearance of twins, the average twin thickness and average twin intensity, and the total twin strain to estimate that the observed calcite twins were produced at temperatures of < $200^{\circ}C$ in the Joseon Supergroup and $170^{\circ}C$ in the Pyeongan Supergroup. In the Joseon Supergroup, the dominant direction of the maximum shortening axis WNW-ESE to NW-SE; NE-SW shortening is also observed. The maximum shortening axes in the Pyeongan Supergroup are oriented NW-SE and NE-SW. The NE-SW direction of maximum shortening is associated with the occurrence of the Songrim orogeny of the Paleozoic to Early Jurassic, and the NW-SE direction of maximum shortening correlates to the Daebo orogeny of the Early Jurassic to Late Jurassic. It is thus concluded that the paleostress across the study area changed from NE-SW to NW-SE during the Mesozoic.
The purpose of this study was to determine the biomechanical effect of wearing carbon nanotube-based insole on cushioning and muscle tuning during drop landing. Twenty male university students(age: $21.2{\pm}1.5yrs$, height: $175.4{\pm}4.7cm$, weight: $70.2{\pm}5.8kg$) who have no musculoskeletal disorder were recruited as the subjects. Average axial strain, average shear strain, inversion angle, linear velocity, angular velocity, vertical GRF and loading rate were determined for each trial. For each dependent variable, a one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) with repeated measures was performed to test if significant difference existed among different three conditions(p<.05). The results showed that Average axial strain of line 4 was significantly less in CNT compared with EVA and PU during IP phase. The average shear strain was less in CNT compared with EVA and PU during other phases. The inversion angle was increased in CNT compared with EVA and PU during all phase. In linear velocity, angular velocity, vertical GRF and loading rate, there were no significant difference between the three groups. This result seems that fine particle of carbon nanotube couldn't make geometric form which can absolve impact force by increasing density through eliminating voids of forms. Thus, searching for methods that keep voids of forms may play a pivotal role in developing of insole. This has led to suggestions of the need for further biomechanical analysis to these factors.
This paper presents a numerical model for simulating the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls subject to cyclic loadings. The material behavior of cracked concrete is described by an orthotropic constitutive relation with tension-stiffening and compression softening effects defining equivalent uniaxial stress-strain relation in the axes of orthotropy. Especially in making analytical predictions for inelastic behaviors of RC walls under reversed cyclic loading, some influencing factors inducing the material nonlinearities have been considered. A simple hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain relation of steel is also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively. To assess the applicability of the constitutive model for RC element, analytical results are compared with idealized shear panel and shear wall test results under monotonic and cyclic shear loadings.
This paper proposes a mechanical model to describe the load-deformation responses of the reinforced concrete plate members under service load state. An Analytical method is introduced on the basis of the rotating crack model which considers equilibrium, compatibility conditions, load-strain relationship of cracked member, and constitutive law for materials. The tension stiffening effect in reinforced concrete structures is taken into account by the average tensile stress-strain relationship from the load-strain relationship for the cracked member and the constitutive law for material. The strain compatibility is used to find out the crack direction because the crack direction is an unknown variable in the equilibrium and compatibility conditions. The proposed theory is verified by the numerous experimental data such as the crack direction, moment-steel strain relationship, moment-crack width relationship. The present paper can provide some basis for the provision of the definition of serviceability for plate structures of which reinforcements are deviated from the principal stresses, because the present code defines the serviceability by the deflection, crack control, vibration and fatigue basically for the skeletal members. The proposed theory is applicable to predict the service load state behavior of a variety of reinforced concrete plate structures such as skew slab bridges, the deck of skew girder bridges.
The stress triaxiality and lode angle are known to be most dominant fracture parameters in ductile materials. This paper proposes a three-dimensional failure strain surface for a ductile steel, called a low-temperature high-tensile steel (EH36), using average stress triaxiality and average normalized lode parameter, along with briefly introducing their theoretical background. It is an extension of previous works by Choung et al. (2011; 2012; 2014a; 2014b) and Choung and Nam (2013), in which a two-dimensional failure strain locus was presented. A series of tests for specially designed specimens that were expected to fail in the shear mode, shear-tension mode, and compression mode was conducted to develop a three-dimensional fracture surface covering wide ranges for the two parameters. This paper discusses the test procedures for three different tests in detail. The tensile force versus stroke data are presented as the results of these tests and will be used for the verification of numerical simulations and fracture identifications in Part II.
Accidental events such as collisions, groundings, and hydrocarbon explosions in marine structures can cause catastrophic damage. Thus, it is extremely important to predict the extent of such damage, which determines the total amount of oil spills and the residual hull girder strength. Punching fracture tests were conducted by Choung (2009b), where various sizes of indenters and circular unstiffened steel plates with different thicknesses were used to quasi-statically realize damage extents. A three-dimensional fracture strain surface was developed based on a reference (Choung et al., 2015b), where the average stress triaxiality and average normalized Lode angle were used as the parameters governing the fracture of ductile steels. In this study, new numerical analyses were performed using very fine axisymmetric elements in combination with an Abaqus user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface. Conventional numerical analyses were also conducted for the tests to identify the best fit fracture strain values by changing the fracture strains. Based on the phenomenon of the average normalized Lode angle starting out positive and then becoming slightly negative, it was inferred that the shear stress primarily dominates in determining the fractures locations, with a partial contribution from the compressive stress. It should be stated that the three-dimensional fracture surface effectively predicted at least the shear stress-dominant fracture behavior of a mild steel.
This paper presents estimation of average compressive strengths of three types of stiffened panels under lateral pressure and axial compression based on simplified formulas from CSRs and nonlinear FEAs. FEA scenarios are prepared based on the slenderness ratios of the stiffened panels used for in-service vessels. The seven step lateral pressures by 1bar increment are imposed on FE models assuming maximum 30m water height. The number of FEAs for FB-, AB-, and TB-stiffened panels is totally 189 times. FEA results show that existence of pressure can evolves significant reduction of ultimate strengths, meanwhile CSR formulas do not take into account the lateral pressure effect. Lateral pressure acting on the stiffened panel with higher column slenderness ratio more reduces the ultimate strengths than those with smaller column slenderness ratio. A new concept of relative average compressive strain energy instead of the ultimate strength is introduced in order to rationally compare the average compressive strength through complete compressive straining regime. The differences of the ultimate strengths between CSR formulas and FEA results are relatively small for FB- and AB-stiffened panels, but larger discrepancies of relative average compressive strain energies are shown.
