  • The purpose of this study was to examine an effect of fluoride recharging on fluoride release and surface change of fluoride-releasing restorative materials. Six commercially available fluoride releasing restorative materials (Fuji II LC Improved: FL, Compoglass F: CF, Dyract AP: DA, F2000: FT, Gradia Direct: GD, and Tetric Ceram: TC) were selected as experimental materials. Disk specimens were fabricated with split teflon mold to the final dimensions of 15 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness. Ten samples of each material were fabricated and stored in deionized water at $37^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 3 months. Before fluoride recharging, all specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 emery papers. Fluoride recharging was done at 5-day interval using 2.0% NaF gel. The release of fluoride into the storage water was monitored using a fluoride ion electrode. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple range test. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Fluoride recharge capability were FL > CF > DA and TC group after 12 times exposure to 2.0% NaF gel (P<0.05). 2. All the experimental materials, except for FT group, showed the increase of fluoride release and surface roughness. 3. Fluoride-releasing rates returned to base line within 3 days.

  • A Urea-SCR(Selective Catalytic Reactor) system, which converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water in the presence of a reducing agent, creates a major exhaust gas aftertreatment system for NOx reduction among other compounds. With regard to vehicle applications, a urea solution was chosen based on its eutectic composition of a 32.5wt% urea-water solution. An important advantage of this eutectic composition is that its melting point of $-11.7^{\circ}C$ is sufficiently low to avoid solidification in cold environments. However, the storage tanks must be heated separately in case of low ambient temperature levels to ensure a sufficient amount of liquid is available during scheduled start ups. In this study, therefore, a numerical investigation of three-dimensional unsteady heating problems analyzed to understand the melting processes and heat transfer characteristics including liquid volume fraction, temperature distributions, and temperature profiles. The investigations were performed using Fluent 6.3 commercial software that modeled coolant and electric heater models based on a urea solution. It is shown that the melting performance with the electric heater is higher than a coolant heater and is more efficient.

  • The vast stores of biomass available in the worldwide have the potential to displace significant amounts of petroleum fuels. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one of several paths by which we can convert biomass to higher value products. The wood pyrolysis oil (WPO) has been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of WPO in a diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, high acidity, high viscosity, and low cetane number of the WPO. One possible method by which the shortcomings may be circumvented is to co-fire WPO with other petroleum fuels. WPO has poor miscibility with light petroleum fuel oils; the most suitable candidates fuels for direct fuel mixing are methanol or ethanol. Early mixing with methanol or ethanol has the added benefit of significantly improving the storage and handling properties of the WPO. For separate injection co-firing, a WPO-ethanol blended fuel can be fired through diesel pilot injection in a dual-injection dieel engine. In this study, the performance and emission characteristics of a dual-injection diesel engine fuelled with diesel (pilot injection) and WPO-ethanol blend (main injection) were experimentally investigated. Results showed that although stable engine operation was possible with separate injection co-firing, the fuel conversion efficiency was slightly decreased due to high water contents of WPO compare to diesel combustion.

  • This study evaluated the injection rate and the injection efficiency of the artificial recharge in the upper drought-prone watershed region, where the remaining water was used for injection, by using a numerical model to secure water during a drought. As a result of a numerical model under the condition of diverse injection rates per a well and hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer, the optimal injection rate per a well was estimated as 50.0 ㎥/day, and the injection efficiency was simulated as 33.2% to 81.2% of the total injection volume. As the injection time was shorter, the injection efficiency tented to increase non-linearly. As the injection rate increased, the residual storage in aquifer increased and available groundwater amount also increased, which could be advantageous for drought relief. For a more accurate assessment of injection efficiency, the model will be validated using the field injection data and optimum scenarios will enable the efficient operation of the artificial recharge system in the study area.

  • Since vegetation significantly influences on soil carbon and nutrient storage, vegetation change has been focused on terrestrial carbon and nutrient cycling studies. In this study we investigated soil carbon and major nutrient capitals at the abandoned fields, which had different vegetation composition: a three year abandoned field ($AGR_3$), two ten years abandoned fields ($PD_{10}$ dominant with Pinus densiflora and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and $PM_{10}$ dominant with Populus maximowiczii), and an over sixty years forest ($FOR_{60}$). which were located at Hongcheon-gun, Kangwon-do, South Korea. Both main effects for organic matter (%) were significant: shallow soil > deep soil and $FOR_{60}=PM_{10}$ > $AGR_3=PD_{10}$. Nitrogen concentrations at $PM_{10}$ were the highest, while the lowest at $PD_{10}$. Available phosphorus concentrations were the highest at $PD_{10}$, which were over 10 times of site $FOR_{60}$ and $AGR_3$ at 0-10 cm soil depth. The average organic matter ($173Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and nitrogen contents ($10Mg\;ha^{-1}$) of $PM_{10}$ and $FOR_{60}$ were higher than those of $AGR_3$ and $PD_{10}$ by 57% and 42%, respectively. The available phosphorus contents above 30 cm mineral soil at $PD_{10}$ ($3.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and $PM_{10}$ ($1.3Mg\;ha^{-1}$) were over 120 times and 40 times more than at $FOR_{60}$. Calcium ($3.7Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and magnesium contents ($2.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$) at $FOR_{60}$ were twice or three times higher than at other sites. Organic matter amounts in 0-10 cm and 10-30 em soil had significant positive relationships with nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium contents, but not available phosphorus and potassium contents. This study could not identify the effect of chronological factor and vegetation composition on soil carbon and nutrient capital owing to diverse topography as well as limited study sites. However, this study suggests the accuracy of investigation for regional carbon and nutrient sequestration can be achieved by considering the period of abandoned time on the fields and the land use types. These results may suggest the benefits of forest restoration for soil carbon and nutrient accumulation in marginal agricultural lands in South Korea.

  • Nitrogen included in animal manure can be used as organic fertilizer if it is treated properly but it may cause serious air and water pollution without proper management. Significant amount of nitrogen losses happen in the form of ammonia when the manure staying in animal house and storage facilities and being composted and applied to the field. In order to maximize the manure nitrogen utilization, it is important to understand the mechanisms of nitrogen loss during the diverse manure handling and treatment procedures. The plant available nitrogen portion of total nitrogen in excreted manure was evaluated based on animal type, animal manure collection system, manure treatment process, and application method. About 27% of nitrogen included in excreted pig manure could be plant available if it is applied to the filed after composting process. The plant available nitrogen portion varies from 29% (surface application) to 54% (solid injection) based on application method of digestated piggery slurry. Plant can use 18% of manure nitrogen if the composted cattle and poultry manure applied to the field using surface application method. Manure treatment and application methods need to be carefully selected to control and utilize the manure nitrogen properly.

  • The Purpose of this study is to develop the rainfall-delayed response model (RDR Model) which influences the baseflow proportion of rivers as a result of the antecedent precipitation of the previous several months. The assesment of accurate baseflows in the rivers is one of the most important elements for the planning of seasonal water supply for agriculture, water resources development, hydrological studies for the availability of water and design criteria for various irrigation facilities. The Palukan river gauging site which is located in the Pulukan catchment on Bali Island, Indonesia was selected to develop this model. The basic data which has been used comprises the available historic flow records at 19 hydrologic gauging stations and 77 rainfall stations on Bali Island in the study. The methology adopted for the derivation of the RDR model was the water balance equation which is commonly used for any natural catcbment ie.P=R+(catchment losses) -R+(ET+DP+DSM+DGW). The catchment losses consist of evapotranspiration, deep percolation. change in soil moisture, and change in groundwater storage. The catchment areal rainfall has been generated by applying the combination method of Thiessen polygon and Isohyetal lines in the studies. The results obtained from the studies may be summarized as follows ; 1. The rainfall-runoff relationship derived from the water balance equation is as shown below, assuming a relationship of the form Y=AX+B. Finally these two equations for the annual runoff were derived ; ARO$_1$=0.855 ARF-821, ARF>=l,400mm ARO$_2$=0.290ARF- 33, ARF<1,400mm 2. It was found that the correction of observed precipitation by a combination of Thiessen polygons and Isohyetal lines gave good correlation. 3. Analysis of historic flow data and rainfall, shows that surface runoff and base flow are 52 % and 48% (equivalent to 59.4 mm) of the annual runoff, respectively. 4. Among the eight trial RDR models run, Model C provided the correlation with historic flow data. The number of months over which baseflow is distributed and the relative proportions of rainfall contributing in each month, were estimated by performing several trial runs using data for the Pulukan catchment These resulted in a value for N of 4 months with contributing proportions of 0.45, 0.50, 0.03 and 0.02. Thus the baseflow in any month is given by : P$_1$(n) =0.45 P(n) +0.50 P(n-I ) +0.03 P(n-$_2$) +0.02 P(n-$_3$) 5. The RDR model test gave estimated flows within +3.4 % and -1.0 % of the observed flows. 6. In the case of 3 consecutive no rain months, it was verified that 2.8 % of the dependable annual flow will be carried over the following year and 5.8 % of the potential annual baseflow will be transfered to the next year as a result of the rainfall-delayed response. The results of evaluating the pefformance of the RDR Model was generally satisfactory.

  • Particularly in research related to seawater intrusion the change of fluid electrical conductivity is one of major concerns, and effective monitoring can help to optimize a water pumping performance in coastal areas. Special considerations should be given to the mounting of sensors at proper depth during the monitoring design since the vertical distribution of fluid electrical conductivity is sensitive to the characteristics of seawater intrusion zone. This tells us the multi-channel electrical conductivity monitoring is of paramount consequence. It, however, is a rare event when this approach becomes routinely available in that commonly used commercial stand-alone type sensors are very expensive and inadequate for a long term monitoring of electrical conductivity or water level due to their restricted storage and difficulty of real-time control. For this reason, we have developed a real-time monitoring system that could meet these requirements. This system is user friendly, cost-effective, and easy to control measurement parameters - sampling interval, acquisition range, and others. And this devised system has been utilized for the electrical conductivity monitoring in boreholes, Yeonggwang-gun, Korea. Monitoring has been consecutively executed for 24 hours, and the responses of electrical conductivity at some channels have been regularly increased or decreased while pumping up water. It, with well logging data implemented before/after pumping water, verifies that electrical conductivity changes in the specified depths originate from fluid movements through sand layer or permeable fractured rock. Eventually, the multi-channel electrical conductivity monitoring system makes an effective key to secure groundwater resources in coastal areas.

  • In this paper it is outlined the methodology of estimating the parameters of water balance analysis method for calculating recharge, using ground water level rises in monitoring well when values of specific yield of aquifer are not available. This methodology is applied for two monitoring wells of the case study area in northern area of the Jeiu Island. A water balance of soil layer of plant rooting zone is computed on a daily basis in the following manner. Diect runoff is estimated by using SCS method. Potential evapotranspiration calculated with Penman-Monteith equation is multiplied by crop coefficients($K_c$) and water stress coefficient to compute actual evapotranspiration(AET). Daily runoff and AET is subtracted from the rainfall plus the soil water storage of the previous day. Soil water remaining above soil water retention capacity(SWRC) is assumed to be recharge. Parameters such as the SCS curve number, SWRC and Kc are estimated from a linear relationship between water level rise and recharge for rainfall events. The upper threshold value of specific yield($n_m$) at the monitoring well location is derived from the relationship between rainfall and the resulting water level rise. The specific yield($n_c$) and the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) are calculated from a linear relationship between observed water level rise and calculated recharge for the different simulations. A set of parameter values with maximum value of $R^2$ is selected among parameter values with calculated specific yield($n_c$) less than the upper threshold value of specific yield($n_m$). Results applied for two monitoring wells show that the 81% of variance of the observed water level rises are explained by calculated recharge with the estimated parameters. It is shown that the data of groundwater level is useful in estimating the parameter of water balance analysis method for calculating recharge.

  • This paper aims to study the browning reactions of lipid originated carbonyl compounds with nitrogenous compounds in dried fishes, flounder, mackerel, shrimp, hair tail fish, and whale. The major fatty acids in the flounder, the mackerel, the shrimp, and the hair tail fish were $C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{22:5},\;C_{22:6}$, and those in the whale meat were $C_{16:0},\;C_{18:1},\;C_{20:4}$. The nonpolar lipid contained higher percent of $C_{18:1}$ while the polar lipid contained higher percent of $C_{22:6}$. When those fishes were dried and stored, the PoV and CoV were high in the mackerel and the hair tail fish, whereas low in the flounder, the shrimp, and, the whale. The browning was developed more rapidly in the lipid soluble fraction than in the water soluble fraction of each sample, and the loss of available lysine and polyenoic acids were accompanied. The polyunsaturated fatty acids markedly decreased, particularly, in phospholipid than in neutral lipid, and $C_{20:5},\;C_{22:5},\;C_{22:6}$ were rapidly decreased during the storage.
