Challenges in Selecting an Appropriate Heat Stress Index to Protect Workers in Hot and Humid Underground Mines

  • Background: A detailed evaluation of the underground mine climate requires extensive measurements to be performed coupled to climatic modeling work. This can be labor-intensive and time-consuming, and consequently impractical for daily work comfort assessments. Therefore, a simple indicator like a heat stress index is needed to enable a quick, valid, and acceptable evaluation of underground climatic conditions on a regular basis. This can be explained by the unending quest to develop a "universal index," which has led to the proliferation of many proposed heat stress indices. Methods: The aim of this research study is to discuss the challenges in identifying and selecting an appropriate heat stress index for thermal planning and management purposes in underground mines. A method is proposed coupled to a defined strategy for selecting and recommending heat stress indices to be used in underground metal mines in the United States and worldwide based on a thermal comfort model. Results: The performance of current heat stress indices used in underground mines varies based on the climatic conditions and the level of activities. Therefore, carefully selecting or establishing an appropriate heat stress index is of paramount importance to ensure the safety, health, and increasing productivity of the underground workers. Conclusion: This method presents an important tool to assess and select the most appropriate index for certain climatic conditions to protect the underground workers from heat-related illnesses. Although complex, the method presents results that are easy to interpret and understand than any of the currently available evaluation methods.

청대(淸代) 문언소설(文言小說) 『형창이초(螢窗異草)』의 판본과 국내유입 (The Study of Yingchuangyicao - Focus on the Writer and Printed book)

  • Yingchuang yicao(${\ll}$螢窗異草${\gg}$) is a collection of short stories in Classical Chinese, whose style was much affected by Liaozhai zhiyi(${\ll}$聊齋志異${\gg}$). It consists of 3 chapters, 12 juan, and 138 stories. This work was written by a scholar with the pen name of Hao gezi(浩歌子) in the reign period of Qianlong in the Qing dynasty, and has drawn relatively little attention among the scholars thus far; it was not until 1980's that scholars figured out that the author Hao gezi was Yin Qinglan, the sixth son of the renowned Qing scholar Yin Jishan. Yingchaung yicao had circulated as a manuscript for more than one hundred years until it was printed by Shenbao guan(申報館) in Shanghai in the reign period of Guangxu 2-3 (1876-1877). This edition is currently collected at The Kyujanggan(奎章閣) Institute of National Seoul University. At present, no known study of its introduction to and circulation in premodern Korea is available. However, given that the late $Chos{\ddot{o}}n$ period saw high interest in Chinese narratives, it is speculated that this work was imported to Korea soon after its first publication in China. Later, two publishing houses in Shanghai also published illustrated editions of the work. Given that the Shenbao guan version is the first printed edition of Yingchuang yicao, the copy collected at Kyujanggak Institute should be regarded highly for its academic values.

방사선 발생장치 제조업체 및 의료기관 종사자의 방사선 관리에 대한 지식, 태도 및 실천 (Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Radiation Management among Radiation Generating Device Manufacturers and Medical Personnel)

  • 이 연구는 방사선 발생장치 제조업체 종사자와 의료기관 종사자들 간의 방사선안전관리에 대한 인식을 알아보고 적극적인 대처능력과 안전수준을 향상시키는데 기초자료로 활용하기 위하여 연구조사하게 되었다. 방사선에 대한 지식, 태도 실천 점수는 성별, 연령, 결혼상태, 직종, 직위, 현 직장근무기간, 직장 총 근무기간, 방사선 관련 유사업무 유무, 매뉴얼 비치 여부, 방어 시설유지 여부, 방어 장비보유 수, 방사선 안전교육 여부, 특수건강검진 여부, 방사선 용어인지 여부와 관련이 있었으며, 특히 방사선 관련 직종에서 방사선사의 지식 점수가 가장 높았다(p<0.05). 방사선 안전관리는 방사선제조업체 종사자 및 의료기관 종사자 모두 방사선 노출에 적극적인 방어 노력이 필요하며방사선 안전관리를 위해서는 지침 준수, 주기적인 교육, 시설보강, 매뉴얼 작성, 특수 건강검진 등 제도적 장치가 필요하다.

Preliminary studies on the microplastic pollution in Dal lake, Kashmir (first report)

  • We provide the first study on the occurrence of microplastics in Dal lake, Kashmir, India. Microplastics act as catastrophe that trigger many environmental problems. The key origins of microplastics are larger plastics, which split into smaller plastics after UV light disintegration. There is relatively little work carried out on the existence of microplastics. The present work has been undertaken on the occurrence of microplastics at four pre-selected sites (surface water) in Dal lake, Kashmir. The samples were taken to the laboratory to dissolve organic matter by using H2O2 (6%). To speed up the organic digestion; the treated mixture was heated on a hot plate at 70℃. The mixture was then subjected to density separation. The supernatant obtained was observed under the microscope (10X) and measurements were taken. At site-I, the microplastics ranged from 2-3 mm, site-II 5-6 mm, site-III 3-4 mm, site-IV 4-5 mm in thickness, indicating the presence of microplastics in the lake. The presence of microplastics indicated that the lake has undergone an anthropogenic change over a period of time. Our research highlights the value of enhancing the quality of the drainage system and sewage disposal. This work can be helpful to recognize successful microplastic control management techniques and possible threats associated with the Dal lake. So far, no such data on the presence of microplastics in Kashmir lakes is available.

교육수요와 거주지선택에 대한 이론적 분석 (A Theoretical Analysis on the Demand for Education and Residential Location)

  • 본 논문에서는 경쟁입지 균형이론을 이용하여 교육수요와 거주지선택간의 상호관계를 분석하고자 한다. 부모의 취업과 자녀의 교육은 입지특성을 가지고 있기 때문에 소비자들의 교육에 대한 선호체계에 따라 그들의 입지가 결정되는 다양한 균형상태가 존재하게 된다. 일반적으로, 교육에 대한 취향(선호체계)이 강할수록 교육지에 거주지를 입지하려는 경향이 커지고 교육에 대한 취향이 약할수록 직장지에 거주지를 선택하려는 경향이 나타나게 된다. 거주지입지와 교육수요간에는 일정한 상관관계가 존재한다. 즉 교육지 거주자는 일반적으로 직장지 거주자보다 교육시간을 더 많이 소비하게 된다. 이는 교육지 거주자의 보다 높은 교육열과 그들이 부담하는 낮은 교육가격에 기인한다. 소비자들의 공간적 분포에 대한 모형패러미터들의 효과를 보면, 통학 및 통근빈도효과의 경우, 교육지로의 통학빈도가 증가할수록 직장지와 교육지간의 거리는 점점 짧아지고, 금전적 교육비용이 클수록 교육지에 거주하면서 직장지로 통근하기를 선호하는 소비자타입의 범위는 넓어진다. 거리효과는 직장지와 교육지간의 거리가 증가할수록 직장지 거주자의 총 통학시간과 교육지 거주자의 총 통근시간은 증가한다. 임금효과를 보면, 임금이 증가할수록 교육지에 거주지를 선택하는 소비자의 범위가 좁아진다.

AUTOMATIC DATA COLLECTION TO IMPROVE READY-MIXED CONCRETE DELIVERY PERFORMANCE

  • Optimizing truck dispatching-intervals is imperative in ready mixed concrete (RMC) delivery process. Intervals shorter than optimal may induce queuing of idle trucks at a construction site, resulting in a long delivery cycle time. On the other hand, intervals longer than optimal can trigger work discontinuity due to a lack of available trucks where required. Therefore, the RMC delivery process should be systematically scheduled in order to minimize the occurrence of waiting trucks as well as guarantee work continuity. However, it is challenging to find optimal intervals, particularly in urban areas, due to variations in both traffic conditions and concrete placement rates at the site. Truck dispatching intervals are usually determined based on the concrete plant managers' intuitive judgments, without sufficient and reliable information regarding traffic and site conditions. Accordingly, the RMC delivery process often experiences inefficiency and/or work discontinuity. Automatic data collection (ADC) techniques (e.g., RFID or GPS) can be effective tools to assist plant managers in finding optimal dispatching intervals, thereby enhancing delivery performance. However, quantitative evidence of the extent of performance improvement has rarely been reported to data, and this is a central reason for a general reluctance within the industry to embrace these techniques, despite their potential benefits. To address this issue, this research reports on the development of a discrete event simulation model and its application to a large-scale building project in Abu Dhabi. The simulation results indicate that ADC techniques can reduce the truck idle time at site by 57% and also enhance the pouring continuity in the RMC delivery process.

표준시방서 기반의 의미론적 분석을 반영한 건설 현장 사진 자동 분류 모델 개발 (Development of an Automatic Classification Model for Construction Site Photos with Semantic Analysis based on Korean Construction Specification )

  • 4차 산업 시대에서의 데이터는 산업의 생산성을 높이는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 활용 가능한 데이터가 부족한 건설산업의 디지털화 수준을 높이기 위해서 본 연구에서는 건설 현장 사진을 공종별로 분류하는 모델을 연구하였다. 이미지만을 가지고 분류하는 기존의 이미지 분류 모델과 달리, 본 연구는 표준시방서에서 객체와 공종 간의 중요도를 추출하여 이를 분류 과정에 반영하는 방식으로 공종에 대한 의미론적인 분석을 포함한 분류 모델을 제안하였다. 객체와 공종 간의 중요도는 사진 내에서 탐지한 객체와 표준시방서의 정보를 연결하여 추출한 후 모델에 반영하였고, 이러한 방식으로 개발된 모델을 분류 프로그램에 적용하여 실제 실무에서의 유용성을 확인해 보았다. 제안한 모델은 결과에 해석가능성과 신뢰도를 높여주는 것뿐만 아니라 현장 기사들이 사진을 분류하는데 용이성을 주게 되며, 이러한 연구의 결과는 건설산업의 디지털화에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

근입조건에 따른 마이크로파일의 거동특성 (Behavior Characteristics of Micropile Following the Embedded Condition)

  • 최근 도심지 공사에 있어서는 공간부족 및 주변환경의 영향으로 기성파일의 시공이 불가능한 경우가 많다. 이러한 경우에 소형 장비로 시공이 가능하고 기존 파일의 지지능력을 발휘할 수 있는 소구경 파일 공법이 많이 사용되고 있다. 소구경 파일공법은 현장타설말뚝의 한 종류로서 파일의 직경이 75mm~300mm인 정도로 주변 구조물이나 지반 그리고 공간적인 장애물이 있는 경우에도 시공의 어려움이 거의 없으며 모든 종류의 토질조건에서 시공이 가능하다. 또한 시공과정에서 진동과 소음이 적고 건물 천장이 낮은 곳에서도 시공이 가능하므로 기존 건물의 기초보강에도 많이 이용된다. 이러한 마이크로파일이 압축력이나 인장력을 받았을 때 혹은 시공된 지반특성에 따라 변화되는 거동 특성에 대해서는 연구가 많지 않은 실정이다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 현장에 시공된 마이크로파일에 대한 현장재하시험 자료 분석을 통하여 마이크로 파일에 압축력 및 인장력을 가했을 경우 지반을 구성하는 성분과 파일의 근입조건에 따른 침하 및 지지력 특성을 규명하고 통계분석프로그램인 SAS를 활용하여 마이크로파일의 침하와 지지력에 영향을 미치는 주요한 인자에 대한 분석을 수행하였다.

과학탐구 실험대회의 문제점 분석 (Critical Analyses of '2nd Science Inquiry Experiment Contest')

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the problems of 'Science Inquiry Experiment Contest(SIEC)' which was one of 8 programs of 'The 2nd Student Science Inquiry Olympic Meet(SSIOM)'. The results and conclusions of this study were as follows: 1. It needs to reconsider the role of practical work within science experiment because practical work skills form one of the mainstays in current science. But the assessment of students' laboratory skills in the contest was made little account of. It is necessary to remind of what it means to be 'good at science'. There are two aspects: knowing and doing. Both are important and, in certain respects, quite distinct. Doing science is more of a craft activity, relying more on craft skill and tacit knowledge than on the conscious application of explicit knowledge. Doing science is also divided into two aspects, 'process' and 'skill' by many science educators. 2. The report's and checklist's assessment items were overlapped. Therefore it was suggested that the checklist assessment items were set limit to the students' acts which can't be found in reports. It is important to identify those activities which produce a permanent assessable product, and those which do not. Skills connected with recording and reporting are likely to produce permanent evidence which can be evaluated after the experiment. Those connected with manipulative skills involving processes are more ephemeral and need to be assessed as they occur. The division of student's experimental skills will contribute to the accurate assess of student's scientific inquiry experimental ability. 3. There was a wide difference among the scores of one participant recorded by three evaluators. This means that there was no concrete discussion among the evaluators before the contest. Despite the items of the checklists were set by preparers of the contest experiments, the concrete discussions before the contest were necessary because students' experimental acts were very diverse. There is a variety of scientific skills. So it is necessary to assess the performance of individual students in a range of skills. But the most of the difficulties in the assessment of skills arise from the interaction between measurement and the use. To overcome the difficulties, not only must the mark needed for each skill be recorded, something which all examination groups obviously need, but also a description of the work that the student did when the skill was assessed must also be given, and not all groups need this. Fuller details must also be available for the purposes of moderation. This is a requirement for all students that there must be provision for samples of any end-product or other tangible form of evidence of candidates' work to be submitted for inspection. This is rather important if one is to be as fair as possible to students because, not only can this work be made available to moderators if necessary, but also it can be used to help in arriving at common standards among several evaluators, and in ensuring consistent standards from one evaluator over the assessment period. This need arises because there are problems associated with assessing different students on the same skill in different activities. 4. Most of the students' reports were assessed intuitively by the evaluators despite the assessment items were established concretely by preparers of the experiment. This result means that the evaluators were new to grasp the essence of the established assessment items of the experiment report and that the students' assessment scores were short of objectivity. Lastly, there are suggestions from the results and the conclusions. The students' experimental acts which were difficult to observe because they occur in a flash and which can be easily imitated should be excluded from the assessment items. Evaluators are likely to miss the time to observe the acts, and the students who are assessed later have more opportunity to practise the skill which is being assessed. It is necessary to be aware of these problems and try to reduce their influence or remove them. The skills and processes analysis has made a very useful checklist for scientific inquiry experiment assessment. But in itself it is of little value. It must be seen alongside the other vital attributes needed in the making of a good scientist, the affective aspects of commitment and confidence, the personal insights which come both through formal and informal learning, and the tacit knowledge that comes through experience, both structured and acquired in play. These four aspects must be continually interacting, in a flexible and individualistic way, throughout the scientific education of students. An increasing ability to be good at science, to be good at doing investigational practical work, will be gained through continually, successively, but often unpredictably, developing more experience, developing more insights, developing more skills, and producing more confidence and commitment.

Pharmacognostical Evaluation of Andrographis stenophylla C. B. Clarke

  • Andrographis stenophylla C. B. Clarke., (Acanthaceae) is an erect glabrous undershrub with very narrow leaves and stems from a stout rootstock, the corolla pale with dark red stripes. The plant grows in hills of about 1200 meters height in South India. No scientific work reports are available with regard to this plant. The present study, thus deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the plant A. stenophylla using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physico-chemical, morphological and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of A. stenophylla and can possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.
