  • Stereoscopic/autostereoscopic systems have been developed to express 3D images, but have not been successfully use in practise. In order to apply 3D display to promising applications such as advertisements and games, we developed a 42" 2D/3D switchable display. It has characteristics that do not require special glasses for 3D images, uses multi-view technology for improving 3D viewing characteristics, and has a 2D/3D switching function to express dynamic 3D contents as well as conventional 2D contents.

  • A three-dimensional (3D) display system based on computer-generated integral photography (CGIP) is proposed and its feasibility is discussed. Instead of the pickup process in conventional If, the elemental images of imaginary objects are computer-generated. Using these images, we observed autostereoscopic 3D images in full color and full parallax. The lateral and depth resolutions of the integrated images are limited by some factors such as the image position, object thickness, the lens width, and the pixel size of display panel.

  • Integral imaging is one of the three-dimensional(3D) display methods, which is an autostereoscopic method. The integral imaging system can provide volumetric 3D image which has both vertical and horizontal parallaxes. The elemental image which is obtained in the pickup process by lens array has the 3D information of the object and can be used for the depth perception and the 3D correlation. Moreover, the elemental image which represents a cyber-space can be generated by computer process.

  • In this paper, we describe one of the most attractive techniques in autostereoscopic three-dimensional display-integral imaging. We explain the weak points of the integral photography in the early days and the methods to overcome these problems. Finally we describe the technical trends developed recently.

  • A natural 3D image is considered by many people to be next-step in evolution of displays. This paper introduces autostereoscopic 3D of 60-view number, which is made using slanted lenticular lens array and LCD of 15.1 inch diagonal size and 3200 by 2400 pixel numbers and presents the results of our prototype. Due to its large view number, smooth motion parallax is observed and the visual fatigue is reduced.

  • In this paper, we explained characteristics of integral imaging microscope using point light source. To display the bio-medical information, which is captured as a form of the elemental images, using autostereoscopic displays, the characteristics analysis of three-dimensional information is required. For integral imaging microscope using point light source array, the elemental image capturing configuration has to satisfy a specific condition. We explain the condition to capture the elemental images and show the experimental results.

  • Among the several types of 3D display methods the autostereoscopic method has an advantage that we can enjoy a 3D image without any additional device but the method has a disadvantage of a narrow viewing zone so that the moving viewer coannot see the 3D image continuously. This disadvantage can be overcome with the detectioni of viewer's positional movement by head tracking. In this paper we suggest a method of detecting the position of the moving viewer's two eyes by using images obtained through a color CCD camera, The suggested method consists of the preprocessing process and the eye-detection process. Through the experiment of applying the suggested method we were able to find the accurate two-eyes position for 78 images among 80 sample input images of 8 different men with the processing speed of 0.39 second/frame using a personal computer.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to give ergonomists the brief summary of the recently published ISO standards on human-system interaction and tips for application of the standards. Background: Standard developers did hard work on developing a standard in a concise manner. But most of standards are often bulky in volume. Readers of the standards are difficult to catch key points from the voluminous contents of standards and intermingle among them. Method: Focused on newly developed display/control technology, this study reviewed the 14 ISO standards on human-system interaction published during 2008-2013 and summarized key points from them. Results: Schematic diagrams and tables concisely illustrated the processes, procedures, dimensions, or best practices recommended by the standards concerning conception, design, and usability testing for consumer products. Conclusion: The standards provided the minimum level of requirements on design and evaluation on the physical input devices, electronic displays, and control interfaces based on the current state of technology. But the minimum requirements specified in the standards nowadays become mandatory ergonomic requirements in global trade world. Application: Ergonomists can take a quick and broad view on international standardization activities on newly developed display/control technology from this summary study.
