  • The objective of this paper is, based upon the principles of artificial life, to induce emergent behaviors of multiple autonomous mobile robots which form from simple local rules to complex global intelligence. Here, we propose an architecture of neural network learing with reinforcement signals which perceives the neighborhood information and decides the direction and the velocity of movement as mobile robots navigates in a group. As results of the simulations, the optimum weights are obtained in real time, which not only prevent from the collisions between agents and obstacles in the dynamic environment, but also have the mobile robots move and keep in various patterns.

  • This paper deals with the global dynamic behavior of multiple autonomous mobile robots with suggested navigation strategies within unbounded and bounded spatial domain. We derive some navigation strategies of robots wirh complete detectability with finite range to reach their goal states without collision which is motivated by Coulomb's law regarding repulsive and attractive forces between electrical charges. An analysis of the dynamic behavior of the interacting robots with the suggested navigation strategies under the assumption that communication is not permissible between robots is made and some examples are illustrated by computer simulation. The convergence of robot motions to their goal states under certain conditions is established by considering their global dynamic behavior even when some objects are close to their goal points.

  • This paper presents a new quantisation algorithm which has the closed-loop form and guarantees the boundness of accumulative error. This algorithm is particularly useful for mobile robot navigation that is usually implemented on embedded systems. If wheel commands of the mobile robot are given by velocity or positional increment at every control instant and quantised due to finite word length of controller's CPU, the quantisation error gets accumulated to causes large position error. Such an error accumulative characteristic is fatal for non wheeled mobile robots or autonomous vehicles with non-holonomic constraint. To solve this problem, we propose a non-error accumulative quantisation algorithm with closed-loop form. We also show it can be extend to a generalized form corresponding to the n-th order accumulation. The boundness of the accumulative quantisation error is investigated by a series of computer simulation. The proposed method is particularly effective to precise navigation control the autonomous mobile robots.

  • This article presents a new acceleration/deceleration method for real-time control of autonomous mobile robots. In this method, a function which produces the table of acceleration/deceleration in real-time is proposed. This function, while satisfying the basic concept of mechanics, can choose both various ranges of velocity and distance ranges for the selected velocities. Moreover it can control motors with real time. This function is convenient to be realized by programming. and it is faster than other functions because it can be made by assembly language.

  • In this paper, Fundamental rules governing group intelligence "arrangement" behavior of multiple number of autonomous mobile robots are represented by a small number of fuzzy rules. Complex lifelike behavior is considered as local interactions between simple individuals under small number of fundamental rules. The fuzzy rules for arrangement are generated from clustering the input-output data obtained from the arrangement algorithm. Simulation shows the fuzzy rules successfully realizes fundamental rules of the flocking group behavior.

  • In this paper, we propose a global ultrasonic system for the self-localization and autonomous navigation of indoor mobile robots. The ultrasonic sensor is regarded as the most cost-effective ranging system among the possible alternatives, and it is widely used for general purpose, since it requires simple electronic drivers and has relatively high accuracy. The global ultrasonic system presented in this paper consists of four or more ultrasonic generators fixed at reference positions in the global coordinates of an indoor environment and two receivers mounted on the mobile robots. By using the RF (Radio Frequency) modules added to the ultrasonic sensors, the robot is able to control the ultrasonic generation and to obtain the critical distances from the reference positions, which are required in order to localize is position in the global coordinates. A kalman filter algorithm designed for the self-localization using the global ultrasonic system and the experimental results of the autonomous navigation are presented in this paper.

  • In recent years, the research of 3D mapping technique in urban environments obtained by mobile robots equipped with multiple sensors for recognizing the robot's surroundings is being studied actively. However, the map generated by simple integration of multiple sensors data only gives spatial information to robots. To get a semantic knowledge to help an autonomous mobile robot from the map, the robot has to convert low-level map representations to higher-level ones containing semantic knowledge of a scene. Given a 3D point cloud of an urban scene, this research proposes a method to recognize the objects effectively using 3D graph model for autonomous mobile robots. The proposed method is decomposed into three steps: sequential range data acquisition, normal vector estimation and incremental graph-based segmentation. This method guarantees the both real-time performance and accuracy of recognizing the objects in real urban environments. Also, it can provide plentiful data for classifying the objects. To evaluate a performance of proposed method, computation time and recognition rate of objects are analyzed. Experimental results show that the proposed method has efficiently in understanding the semantic knowledge of an urban environment.

  • A precise embedded ultrasonic localization system is developed for autonomous mobile robots in indoor environments, which is essential for autonomous navigation of mobile robots with various tasks. Although ultrasonic sensors are more cost-effective than other sensors such as LRF (Laser Range Finder) and vision, they suffer inaccuracy and directional ambiguity. First, we apply the matched filter to measure the distance precisely. For resolving the computational complexity of the matched filter for embedded systems, we propose a new matched filter algorithm with fast computation in three points of view. Second, we propose an accurate ultrasonic localization system which consists of three ultrasonic receivers on the mobile robot and two or more transmitters on the ceiling. Last, we add an extended Kalman filter to estimate position and orientation. Various simulations and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system.
