COLLAPSE CHARACTERISTICS OF ALUMINUM EXTRUSIONS FILLED WITH STRUCTURAL FOAM FOR SPACE FRAME VEHICLES

  • For improving high-safety, convenience, and ride comfort, the automotive design suffers from radical increase of the weight, the recycling-related rules, regulations on the waste gas, and environmental protection of the resources. Among them, it is well known that the weight increase is the most critical. Thus, in order to minimize the weight of the body-in-white that takes up 20-30% of the whole weight of the automobile, most automotive manufacturers have attempted to develop the aluminum intensive body-in-white using aluminum space frames. In this research, the crush test and simulation for aluminum extrusions are performed to evaluate the collapse characteristics of that light weighted material. Also. the same test and simulation was done for aluminum extrusions filled with structural foam. Then, these results are analyzed and compared. From these studies, the effectiveness of structural foam is evaluated in improving automotive crashworthiness. Finally, the design strategy and guideline of the structural form are suggested in order to improve the crashworthiness for aluminum space frame in the vehicle.

Strategy and Development of Recycling Technology for End-of-Life Vehicles(ELVs) in Germany

  • The quantity of passenger cars in industrial countries has been significantly increased in recent years. According to prognoses, this tendency is likely to continue in the forthcoming future. As a direct consequence, an increase of End-of Life-Vehicles (ELV) will confront us with the problem of "ELV-Recycling". In order to cope with this situation, the European regulation for the treatment of End-of-Life-Vehicles (09/2000) has been transferred to national law in Germany (ELV-Regulation from 1 July 2002). The long term aim is to reduce residues from the ELV-treatment to less than 5 wt% from 30 wt% within the next 10 years (2015). For that reason, there is a need for innovative and more efficient recycling techniques tailored to future materials in automobiles. The design process at automotive industry is continuously changing due to the strong demand on optional equipment and new technical solutions for fuel saving. Light materials, such as aluminum and plastics, consequently become more important and cause a decrease of ferrous metals. Since plastic materials are often used as compounds, a separation into initial material types by means of mechanical recycling methods is not possible. For that reason, efficient recycling can only be realized by introducing recycling-friendly car designs. In the end an integrated approach of auto makers and recycling industry is of decisive significance for the fulfillment of future regulations.

Automotive Recycling System and Recycling Business of Dismantler in Japan (일본(日本)의 자동차 리싸이클링시스템과 해체업계(解體業界) 경영동향(經營動向_)

  • In order to review the End-of Life Vehicle(ELV) recycling system and recycling business of dismantlers in Japan, scheme of the automobile recycling law, status of ELV recycling, exports of used cars, ELV marketing business of dismantler and upgrading of used parts net work were studied. On the other hand, field survey in details for dismantling works were conducted at West-Japan Auto Recycling Co.. Although the ELV recycling system has been operating smoothly without any noticeable trouble, recycling business is running under severe circumstance. Exports of used cars have been increasing day by day through worldwide 176 countries. Finally, reuse parts of ELV concerning innovation marketing was discussed.

  • The history of polyurethane is relatively shorter compared to that of the other polymers, though its importance has grown rapidly. Due to its unique properties, polyurethanes are widely applied in various fields. In particular, the automotive industry is one of the important application fields. To date, polyols and isocyanates used in the polyurethane industry are generally of petrochemical origin. Recently, owing to the oil crisis, legislation, and growing awareness towards environmental preservation, the demand for more sustainable and eco-friendly raw materials has increased. In this paper, the latest research and development trends in polyurethane applications were reviewed, with a focus on the automobile industry in areas such as seat comfort, noise reduction, light weight, biomass-based polyurethane, and recycling.

  • Plastic supply and recycling are increasingly becoming matters of social concern. In our country, Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR) system has been adopted in 2003 to expand recycle and reuse of waste resources at producer side, and due to expansion of the EPR system, amount of the mixed plastic waste generation has been drastically increased. Plastic-plastic separation is most fundamental technique to achieve effective plastic recycling. This paper reviews recent developments in plastic-plastic separation techniques and describe future tasks. The mechanisms of each separation which contain gravity separation, electrostatic separation, flotation, and separation of automotive shredder residue are described, and commercial scale and lab-scale results are introduced.

  • Automotive industries are interested in material development with low weight and recycling. Grommet is made from EPDM at rubber and used as an automotive component. The nonlinear material properties of rubber are important to predict the behaviors of rubber product. This study concerns material property test to achieve stress-strain curve. Curve fitting is carried out to obtain the nonlinear material constant. The nonlinear material constants of rubber are used for the nonlinear finite element analysis. The results of finite element analysis is executed to predict the behavior property of grommet.

  • Today the tastes of consumers change rapidly and the kinds of the products become diverse. Therefore the product life cycle becomes shorter and shorter. Moreover the save of resources and the recycling for the environmental preservation are the essential theme. On this the necessary information for the product development increases enormously. For the right use of the information the design process should be supported by the proper design tool. For this the 'design catalogue system for recycling' is suggested here. This system consists of four parts, that is, 'the existing automobile system database', 'working principle database', 'assessment system of the ease of disassembly' and 'one's own product development database' By the use of this system the product development period could be reduced about 30% drastically.

Recycling of Aluminum Alloy from Al-Cu Metal Matrix Composite Reinforced with SiC Particulates

  • In this study, we investigate the recycling of aluminum-based metal matrix composites(AMCs) embedded with SiC particulates. The microstructure of the AMCs is characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The possibility of recycling the composite scrap is attempted from the melted alloy and SiC particulates by re-melting, holding and solidification in crucibles. The recovery percentage of the matrix alloy is calculated after a number of holding times, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes and for different particulate sizes and weight fractions in the Al matrix. The results show that the recovery percentage of the matrix alloy, as well as the time required for maximum recovery of the matrix, is dependent on the size and weight fraction of SiC particulates. In addition, the percentage recovery increases with particulate size but drops with the particulate fraction in the matrix. The time to reach maximum recovery falls rapidly with an increase in particulate size and fraction.

A Study on the Thermal Properties of Glass for Effective Salvage Process of Flat Cathode-ray Tube (평면 음극선관의 재생률 향상을 위한 유리재료의 열적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The CRT(Cathode-ray Tube) of salvage is a process of separating the panel and funnel to recycle a cathode-ray tube. In this paper, the thermal properties of glass for CRT were studied to improve its recycling ratio. In the salvage process, several patterns of breakage, as called 'comer pull', were easily generated on the sealing surface of panel or funnel glass due to the residual tensile stress, which had correlations with some parameters of the manufacturing process of CRT and the initial material properties of glass. Finite element analyses and experimental approaches on the flit sealing process were carried out to obtain the major characteristic of glass related to the residual stress. From this study, it was identified that the thermal expansion coefficient of glass had much influence on the residual stress of panel glass after frit sealing process. Therefore, the optimal conditions of thermal properties for CRT glass were proposed to achieve an effective salvage process. By using these optimal conditions, the size of comer pull on the panel and funnel glass was reduced to 10% level compared with the original size, and the recycling ratio of CRT was increased in the salvage process.

Design Catalogue for Recycling of Automobile Parts (자동차 리사이클링을 고려한 설계 카탈로그)

  • The world faces a legacy of serious environmental problems such as exhaustion of natural resources and lack of landfill sites. To address these problems, recycling of materials and products has been proposed, but at present, it is realized only within a few fields. This is because most industrial products consist of various components made of different materials and their recycling are based on the assumption that they can be separated and classified easily, the actual situation however cannot satisfy this assumption. The issue in recycling the components and wastes of used cars, in turn, gives rise to emphasis on the disassembly process. For the efficient disassembly, the component materials and their easy separation as well as the recyclability must be taken into account as early as in the design process. It should be developed an almost perfect design catalogue with existing technologies by analyzing design characteristics, manufacturing, assembly and disassembly processes for major parts and components of automobiles in terms of existing and newly proposed recycling technologies. Also it is essential to provide more technical know-how and application methods that may be helpful to utilize different components and component groups.
