  • Convenience and safety are the key words for the automotive driving and various sensor technologies have been studied for enhanced perception of driving environments. In frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems, single antenna is enough for range and velocity detection of multiple targets. Multiple array antenna is needed for estimating direction of arrival(DoA). Using DoA estimation algorithm in time domain as in the conventional systems, it is difficult to distinguish vehicles lie in the same angle. In order to facilitate the enhanced angle estimation, DoA estimation algorithm is applied in frequency domain. In this paper, the method for applying multiple signal classification(MUSIC) algorithm in frequency domain is suggested and the performance is analyzed.

Design of Dual Beam Automotive Laser Radar (차량용 듀얼 빔 레이저 레이더의 설계)

  • In this paper, we develop a dual beam automotive laser radar system which improve the defect of conventional unipolar one beam laser scheme. We introduce an SNR improving method using bipolar signal synthesizing scheme from two unipolar signals at the receiving unit via differential structure by allocating bipolar m-sequence into the two laser wavelengths, which have similar property like 2-D OOC, and investigate its performance. Simulation results show that the proposed dual beam scheme can have 3dB SNR improvement as compared with conventional unipolar signaling laser radar system. Also, we show the simple interference rejection scheme using differential structures. The proposed scheme have a merit to obtain additional 3dB SNR gain applied into the excellent results based on unipolar optical signal studied lately.

Design of 77 GHz Automotive Radar System (77 GHz 차량용 레이더 시스템 설계)

  • This work presents the design and measured results of the single channel automotive radar system for 76.5~77 GHz long range FMCW radar applications. The transmitter uses a commercial GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit(MMIC) and the receiver uses the down converter designed using 65 nm CMOS process. The output power of the transmitter is 10 dBm. The down converter chip can operate at low LO power as -8 dBm which is easily supplied from the transmitter output using a coupled line coupler. All MMICs are mounted on an aluminum jig which embeds the WR-10 waveguide. A microstrip to waveguide transition is designed to feed the embedded waveguide and finally high gain horn antennas. The overall size of the fabricated radar system is $80mm{\times}61mm{\times}21mm$. The radar system achieved an output power of 10 dBm, phase noise of -94 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset and a conversion gain of 12 dB.

Optimal Design of 70GHz Band Array Antenna for Short-Range Radar Sensor using The Chebyshev Polynomials (Chebyshev 다항식을 이용한 70GHz 대역 근거리 레이다 센서용 배열안테나의 최적설계)

  • This paper presents a procedure to optimize the design of 70GHz band array antenna for automotive short range radar sensor applications using Chebyshev polynomials. SRR(: Short Range Radar) systems require a wide angle width and low Side lobe level to detect targets within close proximity while ensuring a high Field of View(FoV). The optimized antenna operates in the 76 to 81GHz frequency range, and to reduce the antenna size, we arranged 12 patches in series, achieving an SLL of 10dB, angle with of 112.5o, gain of 15.4dB and an input return loss of less than -10dB at 78GHz. In this paper, we proceed with antenna design for SRR using Chebyshev polynomials, and present an optimal design for antenna structures to be used in MRR(: Medium-Range Radar) and LRR(: Long Range Radar) applications based on this paper

  • The FMCW(Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar possesses range-velocity ambiguity to identify the correct combination of beat frequencies for each target in the multi-target situation. It can lead to ghost targets and missing targets, and it can reduce the detection probability. In this pap er, we propose an effective identification algorithm for the correct pairs of beat frequencies and the signal processing hardware architecture to effectively support the algorithm. First, using the correlation of the detected up- and down-beat frequencies and Doppler frequencies, the possible combinations are determined. Then, final pairing algorithm is completed with the power spectrum density of the correlated up- and down-beat frequencies. The proposed hardware processor has the basic architecture consisting of beat-frequency registers, pairing table memory, and decision unit. This method will be useful to improve the radar detection probability and reduce the false alarm rate.

  • The potential use of ranging sensors for reducing the occurrence of accidents in real environment is explored by many companies and laboratories. Most of the sensors under investigation utilize the FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) waveforms. The automotive environment presents to the FMCW radar sensor a multitude of moving and fixed targets and the sensor must detect and track only the targets which may pose a threat of collision or passengers accident. The sensor must function accurately in the presence of background echoes generated by moving and fixed targets, ground reflections, atmospheric noises, including rains, fog, and, snow and noise generated within the receiver. False detection of the desired target in this environment may issue false alarms. That may be dangerous to the passenger and the vehicle. A high false alarm rate is totally unacceptable. The false alarm mechanism consists of noise peaks, crossing the threshold and the undesired response of the system to off lane targets which are not potentially hazardous to the radar equipped vehicle. This paper presents an improve technique safety performance for driver-less operation using FMCW radar sensors.

  • This paper presents design of a vehicle stop-and-go cruise control strategy based on analyzed results of the manual driving data. Human drivers driving characteristics have been investigated using vehicle driving data obtained from 100 participants on low speed urban traffic ways. The control algorithm has been designed to incorporate the driving characteristics of the human drivers and to achieve natural vehicle behavior of the controlled vehicle that would feel comfortable to the human driver under low speed stop-and-go driving conditions. Vehicle following characteristics of the cruise controlled vehicle have been investigated using a validated vehicle simulator and real driving radar sensor data.

  • Virtual testing is considered a major requirement for the safety verification of autonomous driving functions. For virtual testing, both the autonomous vehicle and the driving environment should be modeled appropriately. In particular, a realistic modeling of the perception sensor system such as the one having a camera and radar is important. However, research on modeling to consistently generate realistic perception results is lacking. Therefore, this paper presents a sensor modeling method to provide realistic object detection results in a MILS (Model in the Loop Simulation) environment. First, the key parameters for modeling are defined, and the object detection characteristics of actual cameras and radar sensors are analyzed. Then, the detection characteristics of a sensor modeled in a simulation environment, based on the analysis results, are validated through a correlation coefficient analysis that considers an actual sensor.

  • In the proposed method, two regular laser working at two different wavelengths perform moving object detection alternatively in time. The laser intensity and the beaming period of each laser is equally maintain as to the single laser radar, hence, externally, dual beam lasers radar works exactly same as the single beam laser radar except that the proposed dual lasers radar needs additional post-processing of received signals in the receiver. To verify the robustness of the proposed method, a set of computer simulation has been performed. The communication channel is assumed to be additive white Gaussian noise, and the perfect synchronization is assumed. All other simulation parameters such as signal power and signalling period are equally maintain in both systems while the signal processing time such as spreading and filtering are expected to be trivial in call cases.
