  • The current automotive is seeking the improvement of performance, the prevention of environmental pollution and the saving of energy resources according to miniaturization and lightweight of the components. And the variance analysis on the basis of structure analysis and DOE is applied to the lower control am. We have proposed a statistical design model to evaluate the effect of structural modification by performing the practical multi-objective optimization considering weight, stress and fatigue lift. The lower control arm is performed the fatigue analysis using the load history of real road test. The design model is determined using the optimization of acquired load history with the fatigue characteristic. The characteristic function is made use of the optimization according to fatigue characteristics to consider constrained function in the optimization of DOE. The structure optimization of a lower control arm according to fatigue characteristics is performed. And the optimized design variable is D=47 m, T=36mm, W=12 mm. In the real engineering problem of considering many objective functions, the multi-objective optimization process using the mathematical programming and the characteristic function is derived an useful design solution.

  • Most of mechanical structures are composed of many substructures connected to one another by various types of mechanical joints. In automotive engineering, it is important to study these connected structures under various dynamic forces for the evaluations of fatigue life and stress concentration exactly. In this study, the dynamic response of vehicle structure to external forces is classified an inverse problem involving strains from the experiment and the analysis. The practical dynamic forces are determined by the combination of the analytical and experimental method with analyzed strain by quasi-static finite element analysis under unit force and with measured strain by a strain gage under driving load, respectively. In a stressed body, inter-molecular chemical bonds are failed beyond the certain magnitude. The failure of molecular structure in material is considered as a time process of which rate is determined by mechanical stress. That is, the failure of inter-molecular chemical bonds is the fatigue lift of material. This kinetic concept is expressed as lethargy coefficient. And S-N curve is obtained with the lethargy coefficient from quasi-static tensile test. Equivalent practical dynamic force is obtained from the identification of practical dynamic force for one loading point. Using the practical dynamic force and S-N curve, fatigue life of a window pillar is analyzed with FEM under the identified force by the procedure of above mentioned.

  • DME (Di-Methyl Ether) is synthetic product that is produced through dehydration of methanol or a direct synthesis from syngas. And it is able to save fossil fuel and reduce pollutants of emission such as PM and $CO_2$. In spite of its advantages it is difficult to design DME fuelled engine system because DME fuel may cause to severely generate cavitation and corrosion in fuel delivery system due to physical properties of DME. Therefore, in this study three-dimensional internal flow characteristics with consideration of cavitation were predicted in the DME injector using diesel and DME fuel. Moving grid technique was employed to describe needle motion and 1-D hydraulic simulation of injector was also simulated to obtain transient needle motion profiles. The results of simulation show that cavitations was generated at the inlet of nozzle near high velocity region both diesel and DME. And mass flow rate of DME is reduced by 4.73% compared to that of diesel at maximum valve lift because cavitation region of DME is much more larger. To increase flow rate of DME injector, internal flow simulation has been conducted to investigate the nozzle hole inner R-cut effect. The flow rates of diesel and DME increase as R-cut increases, and flow coefficient of DME fuel injector was increased by 6.3% on average compared with diesel fuelled injector. Finally, optimum shape of DME injector nozzle is suggested through the comparison of flow coefficient with variation of nozzle hole inner R-cut.

  • This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for calculating the wear of journal bearings during the start-up and coast-down cycles of a motoring stripped-down single cylinder engine operating with a tilted shaft. In order to decide whether the lubrication state of a journal bearing is in the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime, we utilize lift-off speed and MOFT (most oil film thickness) under mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime at the corresponding aligned shaft. We formulate an equation for the modified film thickness in a misaligned journal bearing considering the additional wear volume described in Part I of this study. For this, we use the calculation results of the degree of misalignment and tilting angle obtained after finding the eccentricities of the two bearings supporting the crankshaft of a single cylinder engine. In this Part II, we calculate the wear of journal bearings using the fractional film defect coefficient, the asperity load sharing factor, and the modified specific wear rate for the application of mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime. We show that the accumulated wear volume after turning the ignition switch on and off once, increases to ${\sigma}=39{\mu}m$ and then decreases from ${\sigma}=39{\mu}m$ with increasing in surface roughness.

  • Mechanical tappet is used to reduce the cost and friction loss compared with hydraulic tappet. But the mechanical tappet doesn't have the ability to control the clearance between cams and valves and is selected by measuring the distance between valves and cams in order to minimize the clearance of valves by considering thermal expansion of valves. So, the valve clearance is nearly zero after fully warming-up periods, but there is valve clearance before warming-up. Especially at cold condition, the clearance is relatively large and can bring about some problems. In this study, the valve motions like lift, velocity, seating velocity and bouncing height were studied at various valve clearance conditions by experiment and analysis. As the valve clearance increases, the ramp area becomes shorten and it causes the valve train motion to have bad effects.

  • This study is about distributions of heat transfer in air conditioning duct used for marine and oil drilling ship. As the convective heat transfer coefficient increased, heat transfer was conducted dynamically to inside as it exited to the outlet of duct. So, it was checked that the amount of heat transfer generated at duct increased as the convective heat transfer coefficient increased. In case the convective heat transfer coefficient was low, the temperature of duct showed the relatively high temperature distribution due to the temperature influence of internal fluid as the heat transfer between the outside and inside of the duct. In case of temperature distribution generated the volume of the duct along the change of the convective heat transfer coefficient, it was found out that the temperature descended as heat transfer was promoted and the convective heat transfer coefficient increased.

  • This study concerns the distributions of flow in an air conditioning duct used for a marine and oil drilling ship. From the results of carrying out flow analysis and structural analysis of a ventilation duct applied to a marine structure, the following conclusion could be gained. The pressure tended to increase as the flow velocity at the inlet increased and the pressure at the inlet increased. It was recognized that the pressure decreased due to the influence of a corrugated tube when it entered and exited from the duct. As a result of structural analysis, a higher train was generated at the corrugated tube compared with the duct. In addition, in the case of the internal pressure of 0.7MPa, which was the designed load, it was found that there was almost no influence as it was within 0.1mm.

  • The results of the measurement of the flow-rate coefficient (Cv-value) and the analysis of a small ball valve are summarized follows. The Cv-values of 1/2-, 3/4- and 1-inch ball valves were measured using a flow-rate measurement test. The manufacturer obtained the Cv-value using a theoretical calculation method. The new experimental measurement and analysis method yielded more reliable results. In addition, the Cv value obtained through numerical analysis was almost identical the value provided by the manufacturer, which was based on experimental results. A Study on Flow Analysis results are all similar appearances as the reliability of the results.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and test the flow rate of a 1-inch ball valve used in a thermal power plant. To identify the flow-rate characteristics, numerical analysis was conducted and an experimental apparatus of the valve flow rate coefficient was used to compare the flow coefficient Cv values. To determine the internal pressure distribution, the sites of opening ball valves and flow fields were investigated. In particular, a smaller the valve opening resulted in a more complicated the flow field of the ball. The valve flow characteristic test showed that the Cv value and flow rate increased with increasing valve-opening rate and the secondary function was performed. The pressure drop increased as the valve opening rate decreased. In addition, the experimental results for the flow analysis are similar to the numerical analysis results.

  • This study conducts the flow analysis on the basis of the impeller RPM of water metering valve. The software used for the flow analysis is STAR-CCM+. In terms of the structure of the metering valve, it has an impeller installed inside, and a metering chamber has inlet and outlet holes. The flow analysis on the water metering valve drew the following conclusions: Regarding the flow field in the valve, the impeller had the highest velocity distribution, and complex flow field was generated in the metering chamber. In particular, since the path between the inlet and outlet holes in the metering chamber and the valve body was narrow, there was a section that had flow field interference. The flow rate and flow coefficient distribution according to the impeller RPM were on the linear increase. Given that, it showed the feature of the valve used for water metering on the basis of the impeller RPM.
