  • 141,841 car-to-car collision had occurred in 2003, and among the accidents 51,796 were rear-end impact. According to insurance company for loss or damage, more than $60\%$ of rear-end impact victims suffer neck injury. This means at least 31,000 neck injury victims have happened in 2003. More than $97\%$ of the neck injury victims have low severity injury than A.I.S 2. Head restraint, which is designed to limit rearward head movement and equipped on seat, can considerably protect neck from rear-end impact. In this paper we evaluated head restraint geometry and drivers' sitting position according to RCAR standard and carried out low speed volunteer crash test. The crash speed is 4km/h and N.I.C value is used to determine injury probability. Through these research results we can introduce the method to prevent neck injury at rear-end impact.

  • Numerical modeling has been carried out to investigate the two-dimensional air flow in automobile interior with a forced exhaust close to main air inlet for typical ventilation modes. The characteristics such as streamlines and temperature fields in the passenger compartment room with the forced exhaust are analyzed with comparison of the cases without a forced exhaust. The simulation results show that air flow on the floor near the front seat is increased with the forced exhaust for all ventilation modes. Flow recirculation in the cabin is most active in mode 2 with a vertical suction inlet in comparison with other two modes. In particular, less time is taken for air temperature to reach the inlet temperature due to the forced exhaust for the ventilation modes. Finally, it could be predicted that ventilating air flow is much improved with the forced exhaust in the interior Modeling results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of automobile interior fur air ventilation system.

  • Recently, mobility and accessibility occurs for the elder and the handicapped in the aging problem. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of slide-up seat, which helps to care the handicapped passenger in and out the automobile when we enjoy trip with the families including the elder and handicapped. We check the trajectories of slide-up seat inside and outside car to protect its corrosion and the stress at the joints of mechanical structure. Those can be helped to keep the safety and accuracy of the multiple dynamic systems for precision quality assurance in mass production.

  • Purpose: Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children younger than 14 years old. The purposes of this study were to 1) provide a basic overview of child safety seats, 2) review car seat safety usage and misuse, 3) suggest interventions to motivate the usage of child safety seats. Method: The design was a descriptive study with literature review. Previous studies were searched of PUBMED, ProQuest and KERIS. Result: Child safety seats and automobile safety belts protect children in a crash if they are used correctly, but if a child does not fit in the restraint correctly, it can lead to injury. A child safety seat should be used until the child correctly fits into an adult seat belt. Conclusion: To improve child passenger's safety, educational, legislational and environmental enforcements are needed: educational interventions to promote use of child safety seats, strengtened legislation to mandate use of child safety seats, establishment of public acquirements.

  • Engine valve seat is a functionally important part for maintaining engine performance. The progress of automotive technology has increased the severity of conditions to which it is exposed, especially as regards LPG fuel engines and turbocharger. Therefore, it requires excellent heat and wear resistance to meet the severe condition inside the engine. In the present study, effects of solid lubricants such as CaF$_2$, MnS and MoS$_2$ on microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered Fe alloys for valve srats have been investigated for the development of valve seat material with high temerature wear resistance. As a results of engine simulation test, 0.5 wt% CaF$_2$ specimen showed the most excellent property, but in the overall aspect of view valve recession has increased with increasing the amount of solid lubricants.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to provide basic data for the improvement of the standards related to the performance improvement of the firefighting equipment standards for special ambulances. Methods: Among the domestic firefighting equipment standards, the special ambulance standard was compared with the NFPA 1917 standard for the United States automobile ambulance 2019 and European Union European standard EN 1789 medical vehicle and its equipment, a road ambulance. Results: Anti-skid performance based on indoor noise standards, performance standards for interior lights, seat belt warning device, child car seat fixing device, safety handle, auxiliary footrest, and flooring materials should be supplemented. Conclusion: It is necessary to strengthen the production and performance standards for improvement to a level corresponding to the national standards, such as the United States and European Union.

  • An automobile ball joint is the element for connecting the control arm and the knuckle arm, allowing rotational motion. The ball joint consists of the stud, plug, socket, and seat. These components are assembled through the caulking process that consists of plugging and spinning. In the existing research, the pull-out strength and gap stiffness were calculated, but we did not consider the uncertainties due to the numerical analysis and production. In this study, the uncertainties of material property and tolerance are considered to predict the distributions of pull-out strength and gap stiffness. Also, pull-out strength and gap stiffness are predicted as the a distribution rather than one deterministic value. Furthermore, a robust design applying the Taguchi method is suggested.

  • This paper presents active noise control method to form the near-field quiet zone for passengers in an automobile. The actuator model including interior acoustic plant, speaker and amplifier is experimentally identified in forms of auto-regressive and moving average by means of least mean square algorithm, The digital controller is composed of the regulator and Kalman filter to be designed based on LQG (linear quadratic gaussian). If the actuator model is prefiltered with digital filter to be properly designed for concentrating control performance index on the frequency band of primary noise source, LQG design approach can be effectively applied for the design of headset controller. Experimental results demonstrate that near-field quiet zone showing about 10dB noise reduction at microphone position can be formed using the headset located at passenger seat.
