  • This study describes a system that monitors the tool and cutting state of automatic beveling operation in real time. As a signal for cutting state monitoring, a motor current detected from the spindle drive system of the automatic beveling machine is used to monitor abnormal state. Because automatic beveling is processed using a face milling cutter, the cutting force mechanism is the same as the milling process. The predicted cutting torque is obtained using a cutting force model based on specific cutting resistance. Then, the predicted cutting torque is converted into the spindle motor current value, and cutting state stability is diagnosed by comparing it with the motor current value detected during beveling operation. The experimental results show that the spindle motor current can detect abnormal cutting state such as overload and tool wear during beveling operation, and can diagnose the cutting stability using the proposed equip-current line diagram.

  • Proposed in this paper is a model-bated AFA (automatic feedrate-adjustment) method for maintaining smooth cutting-loads (i.e., cutting-force) during 2D-profile milling. Before the cutting-force model was established, some assumptions were verified through a series of preliminary cutting experiments (The results found that the curving-force was independent of the cutting speed and the cutting action at the cutter bosom). From the data obtained during the main cutting experiments, a “chip-load/cutting-force model”representing the cutting-force as a function of the chip-load (i.e., effective cutting-depth) and a feedrate is proposed. Based on the model. an AFA scheme for maintaining smooth cutting-force by adjusting the feedrate (i.e., F-code) according to the changes in chip-load was proposed. To check the validity of the proposed AFA scheme. another set of cutting experiments was conducted by using feedrate-adjusted NC-data while monitoring the actual machining processes using an accelerometer. The experimental results showed that the proposed AFA-scheme was quite effective.

  • In automatic metal cuttings, the chip control is one of the serious problems. So the automatic detection of chip forms is essential to the chip control in automatic metal cuttings. Cutting experiments were carried out under the variety of cutting conditions (cutting speed, feed, depth of cut and tool geometry) and with workpiece made of steel (S45C), and cutting forces were measured in-processing by using a piezoelectric type Tool Dynamometer. In this report, the frequency analysis of dynamic components, the upper frequency distributions, the ratio of RMS values, the numbers of null point and the probability density were calculated from the dynamic componeents of cutting forces filtered through various band pass filters. Experimental results showed that computer chip form monitoring system based on the cutting forces was designed and simulated and that 6 type of chip forms could be detected while in-process machining.

  • In this paper, we proposed the automatic cutting mechanism of the perforation pipes in an automobile muffler. This cutting mechanism makes continuous work possible, because it performs the batch work via the sequential operation of loading, feeding, cutting, and discharging. The proposed cutting mechanism consists of the frame unit, escape unit, turning unit, feeding unit, vision system, clamping unit, spindle/cutting unit and cooling unit. And, these mechanisms have been modularized through mechanical, dynamical and structural optimized design using the SMO (SimDesigner Motion) analysis module. Also, the virtual prototype was carried out using the 3-D CAD program. The cutting process cycle is performed in the order of loading, vision processing, feeding, clamping, cutting and discharging. And the cycle time for cutting one piece was designed to be completed in four seconds.

  • Purpose: Chicken cutting is done manually, which is inefficient, unhygienic, and carries a high accident risk during processing. This study develops and evaluates an automatic chicken cutting machine that suits small-scale workplaces. Methods: This study developed an automatic chicken cutting machine equipped with four traverse blades and two longitudinal blades. An experiment was conducted with various blade rotating speeds and tray feed rates to evaluate the machine's performance. The chicken loss rate and chicken piece weights were measured to calculate the coefficient of variation (CV), thereby determining processing uniformity. Results: The optimal cutting conditions with the smallest chicken loss rate were 0.05 m/s tray feed speed and 18.8 m/s and 16.4 m/s for the traverse and longitudinal blades, respectively. The processing ran at 55.3 chickens per hour and the chicken pieces were more uniform when using the device than for hand-work processed pieces. Conclusions: The loss rate increased in proportion to the cutting-blade rotation speed due to the high cutting rate in meat. The loss rate also increased as the tray feed speed slowed because the cutting blade pushed the chicken meat. The tray feed speed should be increased to improve the amount processed per hour.

  • To be presented is two-dimensional chip-load analysis for cutting-load smoothing which is needed in unmanned machining and high speed machining of sculptured surfaces. Cutter-engagement angle and effective cutting depth are defined as chip-loads which are the geometrical measures corresponding to cutting-load while machining. The extreme values of chip-loads are geometrically derived in the line-line and line-arc-line blocks of the two-dimensional NC-codes. AFA(automatic feedrate adjustment) strategy for cutting-load smoothing is presented based on the chip-load trajectories.

  • Plasma arc cutting is one of the most widely used processes in metal cutting fields and is a process that produces parted metal plates by cutting them with an arc plasma established between the electrode tip and the plate(workpiece). When the tip-to-workpiece distance varies during cutting, the cut quality, for example the kerf width, is deteriorated by the change of plasma arc. The variations of tip-to-workpiece distance are due to the different factors such as inaccuracies in setting the torch or workpiece, thermal distortions during cutting, and uneven surface of workpiece. The control to keep the tip-to-workpiece distance constant is thus indispensable to improve the flexibility of automatic plasma arc cutting system applications. In this study, an arc sensor which utilizes the electrical signal obtained from the plasma arc itself was developed. The arc sensor has an advantage that no particular sensing device is necessary and real-time sensing of the tip-to-workpiece distance is possible directly under the plasma arc. The relationship between plasma arc voltage and tip-to-workpiece distance was determined through the repeated experimental results. The model was used for developing an automatic tip-to-workpiece distance control system of plasma arc cutting. It could be shown that the proposed system has a successful capability of tip-to-workpiece distance control.

  • In this paper, an automatic pipe-cutting machine that uses magnet to attach itself to pipe and performs unmanned cutting process is proposed. The machine uses magnetic force to prevent slip and to attach the machine to the pipe against gravity. The magnetic force is adjustable by changing the gap between the magnet and the pipe. During pipe cutting process, the gravity acting on the pipe-cutting machine widely varies nonlinearly where the gravity is function of climbing angle of the cutting machine along the pipe. The cutting quality is deteriorated with irregular cutting speed. It is necessary to maintain constant cutting speed to obtain good cutting quality ...

  • Recently, the Z-Map model has been used widely to represent the three dimensional geometric shape and to achieve the cross-section and point evaluation of the shape. In this paper, the CNC cutting planning and simulation modules for product with three dimensional geometric shape are realized based on the Z-Map model. The realized system has the various capabilities related to the automatic generation of tool path for the rough and finish cutting processes, the automatic elimination of overcut, the automatic generation of CNC program for a machining center and the cutting simulation. Especially, the overcut-free tool path is obtained by using the CL Z-Map models which are composed of the offset surfaces of the geometric shape of product.
