  • Robot technology is a remarkably interdisciplinary research area, one that can be employed in various industrial fields as well as higher value-added fields. The construction industry, on the other hand, has been known as one of the most difficult research fields to apply robotic schemes. Therefore, applying robot technologies in the construction industry is quite a challenging topic. This paper aims to introduce the progress of automated robotic systems in construction fields, namely with respect to construction robots. While construction robots have a very wide range of application depending on the huge market size of the construction industry, there still exist a lot of problems such as highly risky working environment and inefficiency due to the labor intensive characteristic. In order to solve these problems, a variety of construction robots have been developed and, in this paper, the current state of the robotic systems for construction works and the vision of future robot technology in the construction field are introduced.

  • As a way to build more efficient and intelligent container cranes for todays hub ports, communication networks are used to interconnect numerous sensors, actuators, controllers, and operator switches and consoles that are spatially distributed over a crane. Various signals such as sensor values and operator's commands are digitized and broadcast on the network instead of using separate wiring cables. This not only makes the design and manufacturing of a crane more efficient, but also easier implementation of intelligent control algorithms. This paper presents the performance evaluation of CAN(Controller Area Network), TTP(Time Triggered Protocol) and Byteflight that can be used for cranes. Through discrete event simulation, several important quantitative performance factors such as the probability of a transmission failure, average system delay (data latency) and maximum system delay have been evaluated.

  • In this work, a deadlock avoidance strategy is proposed in order to effectively handle conflicts and deadlocks occurring in zone-control AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) systems. The basic idea is based on Capacity-designated Directed Graph (CDG) theory that was developed to avoid from deadlocks in manufacturing systems. However, to enforce the effectiveness of detecting impending and restricted deadlocks, AGV routings are explicitly described in Extended Directed Graph (EDG). From EDG, a non-conservative deadlock-avoidance strategy is derived. The superiority of the proposed strategy lies on the applicability to diverse AGV path configurations using zone control. Also, because of its insensibility and robustness, it can be effectively used when the system has randomness and stochastic nature.

  • We present an approximate analytical model to estimate throughput capacity and expected waiting times for move requests of an Automated Guided Vehicle System(AGVS) used in manufacturing. This analytical model considers an empty vehicle dispatching rule, namely, the First-Come-First-Served(FCFS) rule. The performance of the analytical model is tested extensively through simulation. Using this model one can rapidly evaluate a wide range of handling and layout alternatives for given flow data. Hence, the model would be most effective when used early in the design phase to narrow down the set of alternative handling systems and configurations prior to simulation.

  • The breakdown of machines lead to the lateness of parts and the change of schedules. Its treatment is very important problem in the shop floor control system. In this study, we present an algorithm minimize the lateness, earliness and change of schedule by controlling machining speed of available machines. Production time and production cost required to manufacture a piece of product are usually expressed as a unimodal convex fuction with respect to machining speed, and each has its minimal point at the minimum time speed or the minimum cost speed, and a speed range between these two speeds is called 'efficiency speed range'. Therefore, the algorithm determines the machining speed in the efficiency speed range. An example is demonstrated to explain the algorithm.

  • This study is concerned with the economic analysis of implementing a material handling system using automated guided vehicle(AGV)s in order to improve the productivity of the production process of chinawares. Analytic hierarchy process(AHP) method for selecting the facilities of material handling systems is presented. Subsequently, as an example, a chinaware production line is analyzed for the economic analysis. The result shows that seven manpowers can be reduced. However the introduction of the new material handling system is turn out to be undesirable due to high initial cost of AGV system, Nevertheless, in the long term, automatic material handling system such as AGV system are expected to play major roles in the modern manufacturing area.

  • Lots of researches and applications on the automated overhead cranes in shops have been done for some decades, but a few successful results are reported. Integrated crane control systems designed by famous engineering companies are still expensive and are not satisfactory in view of maintenance and reliability. A more reasonable control system fit to requirements of manufacturing industries is suggested in the study. The new deigned system has superior capabilities for anti-sway of rope and position control. The controller for automated operations is composed of a Linux-based PC for non real-time control and a high-speed PLC for hard real-time control. Some algorithms required for coil yard operations as well as main control algorithms such as reference position generation, position control and anti-sway control have been designed and fully tested on the new crane simulator. The designed crane control system showed satisfactory performance on position control accuracy and anti-sway of rope. The maximum positional error is 8mm and the maximum sway error is 0.1 degrees. The suggested control strategies have been successfully applied to the 10-1 crane in No. 4 CGL of in the Kwangyang Steel Works and in commercial operation.

  • In an automotive plant, an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) synchronizes material handling flows from a part production line to an auto-assembly line. The part production line transfers parts on small-/large-sized pallets. The products on pallets are temporarily stored on the ASRS, and the ASRS retrieves the products upon request from the auto-assembly line. Each ASRS aisle is equipped with narrow-/wide-width racks for two pallet sizes. An ASRS aisle with narrow-/wide-width racks improves both storage space utilization and crane utilization while requiring delicate ASRS aisle design, i.e., the locations of the narrow-/wide-width racks in an ASRS aisle, and proper operation policies affect the ASRS performance over demand fluctuations. We focus on operation policies involving a common storage zone using wide-width racks for two pallet sizes and a storage-retrieval job-change for a crane based on assembly-line batch size. We model a discrete-event simulation model and conduct extensive experiments to evaluate operation policies. The simulation results address the best ASRS aisle design and suggest the most effective operation policies for the aisle design.

  • Recently, the fourth industrial revolution has been presented as a new paradigm and additive manufacturing (AM) has become one of the most important topics. For this reason, process monitoring for each cross-sectional layer of additive metal manufacturing is important. Particularly, deep learning can train a machine to analyze, optimize, and repair defects. In this paper, image classification is proposed by learning images of defects in the metal cross sections using the convolution neural network (CNN) image labeling algorithm. Defects were classified into three categories: crack, porosity, and hole. To overcome a lack-of-data problem, the amount of learning data was augmented using a data augmentation algorithm. This augmentation algorithm can transform an image to 180 images, increasing the learning accuracy. The number of training and validation images was 25,920 (80 %) and 6,480 (20 %), respectively. An optimized case with a combination of fully connected layers, an optimizer, and a loss function, showed that the model accuracy was 99.7 % and had a success rate of 97.8 % for 180 test images. In conclusion, image labeling was successfully performed and it is expected to be applied to automated AM process inspection and repair systems in the future.

  • Human experts have the various own knowledges to be applied in specialized domains. The fact that knowledge itself becomes more critical in the context of textile knowledge with rapid development of new fibers, automated equipments, processes and applications. Diversity of worsted spun yarns, lack of human expertise, and inconsistency among manually generated process plans in consequency of adjustment machine parameters owing to change up raw materials frequently increase the necessity of developing computer aided process planning(CAPP) systems for spinning process. Expert systems offer one of techniques to develop CAPP systems which would behave in a knowledgeable manner. Expert systems are the problem-solving computer program that can reach a level of performance comparable to that of a human expert in some specialized problem domain. This paper is described as job justification module. The job justification module performs to consult with users on which worsted spun yarn manufacturing process planning under the various factors, e.g., raw materials, machine parameters and required yarn counts. Also, the developed module informs the various knowledges relevant process planning. The job justification module offers the control parameters at each process and includes the various standard process plans as database. These knowledges are generated by facts and rules within rule bases.
