  • A faster autofocusing method is proposed. The searching speed of microscope camera is limited by the long focusing time due to too much sampled digital image data. The improvement of autofocusing speed based on the down sampling is discussed analytically and is proved by experiments. The anticipated aliasing is found negligible in shilling rate of focus measure.

  • The objectives of the present study were to examine the antioxidant activity of autofocusing fractions from egg white protein hydrolysates and obtain higher antioxidant peptide fraction, which could be applied to the food model system. Alkaline protease hydrolysate of egg white protein exerted higher antioxidant activities than other protein hydrolysates and were fractionated on the basis of the amphoteric nature of sample peptides by preparative isoelectric focusing without toxic solvents and reagents, which is termed autofocusing. Neutral and basic fractions showed higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity than the acidic fractions. The acidic and neutral fractions showed higher hydroxyl (OH) radical scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values than the basic fractions. The acidic fractions showed higher metal chelating activity than basic fractions. Antioxidant activities of some autofocusing fractions except for ORAC showed higher compared to the crude hydrolysate. These results suggest that peptides fractions from egg white protein are effective antioxidant, and that autofocusing could be useful to increase antioxidant activity for application to food system.

  • In order to estimate cell images, high-performance electron microscopes are used nowadays. In this paper, we propose a new simple, fast and efficient method for real-time automatic focusing in electron microscopes. The proposed algorithm is based on the prediction-error variance, and demonstrates its feasibility by using extensive experiments. This method is fast, easy to implement, accurate, and not demanding on computation time.

  • Inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) images represent two-dimensional(2-D) spatial distribution of electromagnetic scattering phenomenology against a target. Hence, they are usually used in the areas of automatic target recognition (ATR) or non-cooperative target recognition(NCTR), identifying a target using radar in a long distance. This paper makes use of Korea Miniature Synthetic Aperture Radar(KOMSAR) to generate ISAR images of a real and maneuvering aircraft. The data obtained from KOMSAR are processed to eliminate phase errors due to motion of a target, with the use of entropy-based ISAR autofocusing technique. Results show that we can successfully obtain ISAR images of a real aircraft, and the success of experiments implies that a significant step toward ATR using radar has been established.

  • In this paper we present a simple, efficient method for detection of sharp digital images. Recently many digital cameras are equipped with various autofocusing functions to help users take well-focused pictures as easily as possible. However, acquired digital pictures can be further degraded by motion, limited contrast, and inappropriate amount of exposure, to name a few. In order to decide whether to process the image or not, or whether to delete it or not, reliable measure of image quality to detect sharp images from blurry ones is needed. This paper presents a blurriness/sharpness measure, and demonstrates its feasibility using extensive experiments. This method is fast and easy to implement, and accurate. Regardless of the detection accuracy, existing measures are computation-intensive. However, the proposed measure in this paper is not demanding in computation time. Needless to say, this measure can be used for various imaging applications including autofocusing and astigmatism correction.

  • This paper describes a three dimensional profile measurement method for sheet metal products which have flexible and porous sculptured surfaces. Shadow masks are used as measuring objects for practical implementation or this study. The shadow masks are located inside the fluorescent glasses of monitors for televisions or computers and used to prevent electron guns from interfering between pixels. Three dimen- sional surface profiles are measured by adopting a software autofocusing technique to capture focused images. The experimental results show that the method is very effecive and suitable for sheet meal prod- ucts with flexible and porous surfaces.

  • In this paper, a new autofocusing technique which is resistive to noise generated by the CCD of video cameras is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the frequency selective weighted median (FSWM) filter is utilized to estimate the degree of focus and the fast hill-climbing search (HCS) strategy is exploited to determine the best focused image. Since the FSWM filter can not only extract high frequency components from the image, but also eliminate impulsive noise, the proposed autofocusing method employing the FSWM criterion function can estimate the degree of focus precisely. Furthermore, the proposed real-time HCS algorithm enables the video camera to continuously focus on dynamic images. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique outperforms existing techniques by enhancing the accuracy of the focus value of the video camera without the influence of noise.
