  • A ventriculo-peritoneal shunt is a standard surgical management for hydrocephalus, but complications may impede the management of this disease. Obstruction of the catheter is one of the most common complications and manifests clinically in various ways. Intraparenchymal cyst development after shunt malfunction has been reported by several authors, but the underlying mechanism and optimal treatment methods are debatable. The authors report a case of intraparenchymal cyst formation around a proximal catheter in a premature infant after a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt and discuss its pathogenesis and management.

  • Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis (CP) is a very rare but serious form of central nervous system fungal infection that is caused by dematiaceous fungi. It is commonly associated with poor prognosis irrespective of the immune status of the patient. In this study, the authors describe the first case of CP in Korea that occurred in a 75-year-old man without immunodeficiency and showed favorable outcome after surgical excision and antifungal therapy. In addition, the authors herein review the literature regarding characteristics of this rare clinical entity with previously reported cases.

  • Pneumocephalus is a condition characterized by the presence of air in the cranium, and it is mainly caused by trauma or a neurosurgical procedure. In the absence of head trauma or a neurosurgical procedure, meningitis is an extremely rare cause of pneumocephalus. Here, the authors present a rare case of spontaneous pneumocephalus caused by pneumococcal meningitis, in which simple lateral radiography and computed tomography (CT) findings of the skull suggested the diagnosis. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed bacterial meningitis which later revealed streptococcus pneumonia. The patient was treated with antibiotics and responded remarkably well. Repeat CT performed after 2 weeks of treatment showed complete resolution of the intracranial gas. Here, the authors report an unusual case of a pneumocephalus caused by meningitis in the absence of head trauma or a neurosurgical procedure.

  • previously, several basic studies in the experimental analysis of stress intensity factors of cracks by slab analogy have been presented by authors. But, for the application of above mentioned method to the analysis of the arbitrarily distributed cracks, there still is several bottlenecks to be overcome in terms of its experimental process and data treatment. Moreover, authors recently proposed an improved experimental method to use the fixed slab analogy device which has promised more accurate measurement of S.I.F. of small cracks. In this paper, for the completion of slab analogy analysis of distributed cracks, a grating imaginary rotation method is introduced. And, to prove its validity, this combined method is applied to the determination of stress intensity factors of theoretically known distributed cracks. The results show good agreement with the existing theoretical solutions and physical crack propagation tendencies.

  • A since authors started IORT for stomach cancer patient on 198, we developed various sized, shaped IORT cones for better clinical application and homogeneous surface and depth dose distribution. Authors concluded as following. 1. The shaping block should be fixed on the tray, not under the tray for homogeneous dose distribution. 2. The straight cone was showed better dose distribution than divergence cone. 3. The acryl cone was superior than the stainless-steel cone. 4. The acryl cover fixed on the end for IORT cone not only improvement of surface dose, but also homogenity of depth dose.

  • The purpose of this paper was to introduce 'The Third International Mathematics and Science Study'(TIMSS) to the mathematics education society in Korea, and to address current discussion about the TIMSS from the view of three Korean authors who are currently enrolled in an American university. This paper consisted of three parts: (1) The structure and organization of the TIMSS, (2) The analyses on test items from three populations of student groups, curricula and textbooks, questionnaires from students and teachers, video study, and case studies, (3) The discussion of various perspectives for mathematics education in Korea. The authors pointed out that the TIMSS was not just an international comparison study designed for ranking each of the 41 participating countries, but a study providing some insights for Korean mathematics education.

  • Although several kinds of repellents or attractants have been used for mounting accelerators in the silkworm. Bembyx mori, more effective reagents still have not been developed. The authors developed a mounting accelerator with medical herb (Achyranthes bidentata Blume) and glutamic acid, an indispensable amino acid of silkworm, and experimented it's effects in both periods of spring and fall in 1972-1973. It was obtained that the mounting accelerator newly developed by authors shortened the economic periods by a half day, and did not have an bad effect on cocoon quality.

  • The purpose of this study is to illuminate the reason why community building policies by the Government seem to fail to work properly in Korea. The existing studies focus mainly on designing community building systems, thus they cannot provide plausible explanations about the cause of the unsuccessful outcomes from the policies. To overcome the limitations of the existing studies, the authors examine the implementation factors to influence the policy instruments with the perspective of policy implementation. By performing the analysis, the results imply the implementation factors, such as executer's competence, supports by related interests, incentive systems, and legal-institutional instruments, are important to influence the implementation performance of the relevant policy instruments. To make community building successful policies, The authors therefore suggest that the capacity of local administrators and residents should be raise, and one of which the way to enhance is to support research and program development by the resident-oriented living laboratory systems in localities.

  • Peer review is a well-known, pervasive and most reliable method for assessment of research proposals. But with the strength of peer review, it also has some various limitations and shortcomings. This study suggests the use of bibliometric indicators as a counterbalance of shortcomings and mistakes in peer review. Bibliometric indicators suggested in this study are somewhat different from the conventional ones. Bibliometric indicators with limited number of papers, use of impact factor and discrimination first and corresponding authors from co-authors may produce a more resonable indicators. In this way bibliometric indicators can be considered as complementary to a peer review.

  • It is well known that laryngeal papilloma has a tendency for malignant transformation, but the incidence was variable among many authors. The authors present a case of laryngeal cancer which was considered to be transformed from laryngeal papilloma after six years follow up, with serial pathological review of the specimen. Incidence of malignant transformation in our hospital is 2.5% of total laryngeal papilloma and it is the only case among 57 laryngeal cancer for 6 years duration. It must be stressed that long term follow up is recommanded in adult type laryngeal papilloma.
