  • Recently, many studies have been done for speech recognition in noisy environments. Particularly, the Aurora DB has been built as the common database for comparing the various feature extraction schemes. However, in general, the recognition models as well as the features have to be modified for effective noisy speech recognition. As the structure of the HTK is very complex, it is not easy to modify, the recognition engine. In this paper, we implemented a baseline recognizer based on the segmental K-means algorithm whose performance is comparable to the HTK in spite of the simplicity in its implementation.

  • In this paper, a new noise compensation method based on the eigenvoice framework in feature space is proposed to reduce the mismatch between training and testing environments. The difference between clean and noisy environments is represented by the linear combination of K eigenvectors that represent the variation among environments. In the proposed method, the performance improvement of speech recognition systems is largely affected by how to construct the noisy models and the bias vector set. In this paper, two methods, the one based on MAP adaptation method and the other using stereo DB, are proposed to construct the noisy models. In experiments using Aurora 2 DB, we obtained 44.86% relative improvement with eigen-environment method in comparison with baseline system. Especially, in clean condition training mode, our proposed method yielded 66.74% relative improvement, which is better performance than several methods previously proposed in Aurora project.

  • In a conventional speech recognition system using Gaussian Mixture Model-Hidden Markov Model (GMM-HMM), the cepstral feature normalization method based on pole filtering was effective in improving the performance of recognition of short utterances in noisy environments. In this paper, the usefulness of this method for the state-of-the-art speech recognition system using Deep Neural Network (DNN) is examined. Experimental results on AURORA 2 DB show that the cepstral mean and variance normalization based on pole filtering improves the recognition performance of very short utterances compared to that without pole filtering, especially when there is a large mismatch between the training and test conditions.

  • This paper presents a decoding technique for speech recognition using uncertainty information from feature compensation method to improve the speech recognition performance in the low SNR condition. Traditional feature compensation algorithms have difficulty in estimating clean feature parameters in adverse environment. Those algorithms focus on the point estimation of desired features. The point estimation of feature compensation method degrades speech recognition performance when incorrectly estimated features enter into the decoder of speech recognition. In this paper, we apply the uncertainty information from well-known feature compensation method, such as IMM, to the recognition engine. Applied technique shows better performance in the Aurora-2 DB.

  • The speech recognition system works well in general indoor environment. However, the recognition performance is dramatically decreased when the system is used in the real environment because of the several noises. In this paper we proposed CSFN-CMVN to improve the recognition performance of the existing CSFN(Cepstral distance based SFN). The CSFN-CMVN method is a combined method of cepstral normalization with CSFN that normalizes silence features using cepstral euclidean distance to classify speech/silence for better performance. From the test results using Aurora 2.0 DB, we could find out that our proposed CSFN-CMVN improves about 7% of more average word accuracy in all the test sets comparing with the typical silence features normalization SFN-I. We can also get improved accuracy of 6% and 5% respectively in compared tests with the conventional SFN-II and CSFN, showing the effectiveness of our proposed method.

  • The difference of environments between training and recognition is the major reason of degradation of speech recognition. To solve this mismatch of environments, various noise processing methods have been studied. Among them, ERN(log-Energy dynamic Range Normalization) and SEN(Silence Energy Normalization) for normalization of log energy features show better performance than others. However, these methods have a problem that they can hardly achieve normalization for the relatively higher values of log energy features and the environmental mismatch caused by this problem becomes bigger especially in low SNR environments. To solve these problems, we propose applying ARMA filter as post-processing for smoothing log energy features by calculating the moving average in auto-regression scheme. From the recognition results conducted on Aurora 2.0 DB, the proposed method shows improved recognition results comparing with conventional methods.

  • In this paper we proposed FSFN (Filter bank sub-band energy subtraction based CLSFN) method to improve the recognition performance of the existing CLSFN (Cepstral distance and Log-energy based Silence Feature Normalization). The proposed FSFN reduces the energy of noise components in filter bank sub-band domain when extracting the features from speech data. This leads to extract the enhanced cepstral features and thus improves the accuracy of speech/silence classification using the enhanced cepstral features. Therefore, it can be expected to get improved performance comparing with the existing CLSFN. Experimental results conducted on Aurora 2.0 DB showed that our proposed FSFN method improves the averaged word accuracy of 2% comparing with the conventional CLSFN method, and FSFN combined with CMVN (Cepstral Mean and Variance Normalization) also showed the best recognition performance comparing with others.

  • The MMSE-STSA based speech enhancement algorithm is widely used as a preprocessing for noise robust speech recognition. It weighs the gain of each spectral bin of the noisy speech using the estimate of noise and signal power spectrum. In this paper, we investigate the influence of parameters used to estimate the speech signal and noise power in MMSE-STSA upon the recognition performance of noisy speech. For experiments, we use the Aurora2 DB which contains noisy speech with subway, babble, car, and exhibition noises. The HTK-based continuous HMM system is constructed for recognition experiments. Experimental results are presented and discussed with our findings.

  • The performance of speech recognition is degraded by the mismatch between training and test environments. Many methods have been presented to compensate for additive noise and channel effect in the cepstral domain, and Cepstral Mean Subtraction (CMS) is the representative method among them. Recently, high order cepstral moment normalization method has introduced to improve recognition accuracy. In this paper, we apply high order moment normalization method and smoothing filter for real-time processing. In experiments using Aurora2 DB, we obtained error rate reduction of 49.7% with the proposed algorithm in comparison with baseline system.
