  • Anatomical variations of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) have been observed to occupy multiple origins and insertion points and have supernumerary heads, sometimes varying in thickness. During routine dissection, a SCM was observed to have six distinct insertions that interface with the course of the superior nuchal line, ending at the midline, bilaterally. This variation was also seen to receive innervation from the accessory nerve as well as the great auricular nerve. To our knowledge, this variant of supernumerary insertions and nerve innervations has not yet been reported. These variants may pose as problematic during surgical approaches to the upper neck and occiput, and should thus be appreciated by the clinician. Herein we discuss the case report, possible embryological origins, and the clinical significance of the observed variant SCM.

  • In the clinics of traditional medicine, various acupuncture methods, that is Sa-Am' acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and Dong-Shi' acupuncture, have been introduced and increased gradually to treat the diseases. In this bibliographic study, we examined the interrelation between the Dong Shi' acupuncture and 12 regular channels. The theoretical origination of Dong Shi' acupuncture and 12 regular channels was applied from Yin and Yang, Five Element, State of Viscera and so on. As the treatment using by 12 regular channels have used to 'regulating Qi and Treating Shin (調氣治神)', Dong Shi' acupuncture have used to the itself defense mechanism and relative balance of human beings. Also, these methods have the same rules that was selected to the opposing needling (巨刺) of remote point selection, however, Ah-Shi' points (阿是穴) were not used for the selection. Of Dong-Shi' acu-points, there were many ones which have the same location as the acupoints of regular channels. However, these one was renamed according to the new characteristics and therapeutics found by Dong Shi. Dong Shi' acupuncture has divided human body to the 12 areas but not considered to the concept of a mutual connection of human being body. The needling manipulation methods were vary at the regular channels, but Dong Shi' acupuncture did not use the traditional manipulation method except for supplementary Dong-Qi acupuncture, To-Ma acupuncture and To-In acupuncture. From these study, we found that the Dong-Shi' acupuncture have something in common with 12 regular channels, although the Dong-Shi' acupuncture was not based on the theory of 12 regular channels.

  • In order to review the studies related to the facial pain by acupuncture, we have referred to a PubMed site by using MeSH searching word of "facial pain and acupuncture". 12 journals with 20 papers were reported on the facial pain and acupuncture. Among them, 4 papers were appeared in Am J Chin Med, 3 in Acupunct Electrother Res, 2 in Br. Dent J, J Orofac Pain and Swed Dent J respectively, and 1 in 7 journals respectively. According to the classification of the patterns, 15 papers were done by clinical studies, 2 by review and meta-analysis respectively, and 1 by experimental study. TMD was the most disease that related to facial pain and CMD, neurogenic facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia, postherpetic pain), dental pain and MPS were also appeared. Most of the studies didn't mention the acupuncture points, L14 Habkok in 4 papers and ST36 Chogsamni in a paper were only mentioned. Various modalities were applied in the trials such as classical acupuncture, electroacupuncture, TENS, SSP and auricular acupuncture. By the above results, we concluded that various acupuncture techniques are used with effectiveness on the facial pain. It would be needed further research on the acupuncture point specific and therapeutic techniques as well.

  • Objectives : The GB18 belongs to one of the 92 controversial points in the development of WHO standard of acupuncture point location. The number of Chon measurement of GB18 is described differently in the A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (ChimGuGakEulKyung; AB Classic) and the Complete Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion(ChimGuDaeSeong; Complete Compendium). The aim of the study is to review the point location of GB18 and compare the relation of the location of BL7. In addition, I would like to propose new locating method of GB18. Methods : In order to review I examined the expressions of the location of GB18 and the mapping location on the acupuncture chart in the landmark classic acupuncture literatures. Results : In the most literatures, the location of GB18 was described by the distance from the GB17. The distance was 1.5 chon with one exception of 1 chon. The intervals from GB15 to GB18 was 1 chon or 1.5 chon. Although the distance from the anterior hairline is the same as 4 chon, mapping points of GB18 and BL7 on the acupuncture chart were different. Conclusions : Consequently, in the AB Classic, meaning of the location is the actual distance of scalp surface. In the Complete Compendium, however, meaning of the location is the hypothetical distance in the imaginary scalp surface. Therefore, it is safe to find the GB18 on the same level with GV20 on the connecting line of bilateral auricular apexes. The relation of GB18 and BL7 should be reconsidered.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends regarding the treatment of Postpartum Depression (P.P.D) in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Methods: We searched articles in CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) from 2004 to 2013. Search key words were "产后抑郁症", "Postpartum Depression", and we selected 27 studies except for non-clinical studies, insufficient number of studies, unrelated studies and tests on animals. Results: We selected 27 articles with following results: 1) One study of Jadad Quality Assessment Scale score showed 3 points, 4 studies showed 2 points and 22 studies showed less than 1 point. Overall, the quality of the studies was low. 2) DSM - IV was frequently used as a diagnostic criteria and HAMD was mostly used as evaluation criteria. Diagnostic criteria and evaluation criteria were the same in HAMD and EPDS. 3) In TCM, there are various ways, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, electro acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and/or massage to treat the postpartum depression. 4) The roots of Bupleurum falcatum Linne, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, Angelica gigas Nakai and Paeonia lactiflora Pall, the rhizome of Atractylodis macrocephala Koidz, the semen of Zizyphus jujuba Mill, the radix of Curcuma aromatica Salisb, the sclerotium of Poria cocos Wolf and the rhizomas of Cyperus rotundus L and of Cnidium officinale Makino are mainly used in the herbal medicine. BaekHoi (GV20) and Yindang (Ex-HN3) are mainly used in acupuncture points. 5) Most of the studies showed effective results. Some of the results were similar to those of the control groups which were cured by western medicine. Other results were better than those of control groups. Conclusions: Research on postpartum depression has been actively conducted in TCM and all studies showed effective results in the study group patients. Therefore, with this study, we hope to activate more clinical research on the treatment of patients in Korean traditional medicine.

  • Medicine such as Korean oriental medicine and alternative medicine is inferior to western medicine in diagnostic skills and treatment regimen but despite going through a lot of in western medicine preference to that is situations. Likewise, in Korean oriental medicine and alternative medicine have been closely linked to that effect not proven scientifically to be solved is regarded as the biggest drawback. In this paper, auricular therapy that is often used in alternative medicine to help strengthen the internal organs function which whether the conduct of stimulating ear is effective or not by applying to ocular inspection of Korean oriental medicine is proposed. For this purpose, lung ear reflex points to stimulate were performed after the right cheek color by measuring stimulation before comparison and analysis of the experiments. In addition, in order to examine this first analysis of the human body to the lungs and the elements of image analysis is to study. Experimental result, derived b value increased to a value of the right cheek and the results by lung ear to stimulate reflex point.
