  • We investigated the interaction between polyynes (linear carbon chains) and various metal nanoparticles (Ag, Au, and Cu) to provide insight into the optical properties of metal-polyynes systems prepared by different experimental techniques. Polyynes were produced by laser ablation in deionized water, metal nanoparticles solutions, and copper chloride solution. Metal nanoparticles complexes with polyynes were analyzed by Raman, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy.

  • Syntheses of oxide supported metal catalysts by wet-chemical routes have been well known for their use in heterogeneous catalysis. However, uniform deposition of metal nanoparticles with controlled size and shape on the support with high reproducibility is still a challenge for catalyst preparation. Among various synthesis methods, arc plasma deposition (APD) of metal nanoparticles or thin films on oxide supports has received great interest recently, due to its high reproducibility and large-scale production, and used for their application in catalysis. In this work, Au and Pt nanoparticles with size of 1-2 nm have been deposited on titania powder by APD. The size of metal nanoparticles was controlled by number of shots of metal deposition and APD conditions. These catalytic materials were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP-AES), CO-chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Catalytic activity of the materials was measured by CO oxidation using oxygen, as a model reaction, in a micro-flow reactor at atmospheric pressure. We found that Au/$TiO_2$ is reactive, showing 100% conversion at $110^{\circ}C$, while Pt/$TiO_2$ shows 100% conversion at $200^{\circ}C$. High activity of metal nanoparticles suggests that APD can be used for large scale synthesis of active nanocatalysts. We will discuss the effect of the structure and metal-oxide interactions of the catalysts on catalytic activity.

  • The amphiphilic block copolymer (PEtOz-PCL) of poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOz) and poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) formed spherical micellar structures with an average diameter of 26 nm in aqueous phase. Au and Pd nanoparticles with an average diameter of $2{\sim}3nm$ were prepared by using the PEtOz-PCL micelle consisting of a PEtOz shell and PCL core. The Au nanoparticles of PEtOz-PCL micelles in aqueous phase could be transferred into organic phase by using n-dodecanethiol. The use of the Pd-NP/PEtOz-PCL micelle as a nanoreactor for Suzuki cross-coupling reaction was investigated.

  • Ultrafine Au-Pb particles prepared by two method, (1) simultaneous evaporation of Au and Pb in inert gas and (2) subsequent vapor condensation of Pb in a differentially evacuated tube onto flying Au nanoparticles prepared by gasevaporation technique, were observed by electron microscopy. In the method (1), the particles that grew at the region where the two smoke masses converged, consisted of alloy phases. In the method (2), the particles consisted of two or three phases of Au, $Au_2Pb$, $AuPb_2$ and Pb phases in turn from the inner part, Pb-rich particles being composed of only two phases of $AuPb_2$ and Pb.

  • Gas detection is necessary for various reasons, including the prevention of gas leakages and the creation of necessary environmental conditions. Among the gas detection methods, leakage of gas can be confirmed using materials that undergo color changes that are easily distinguished by the naked eye. Metal nanoparticles (NPs) experience variations in their absorption wavelengths under the localized surface plasmon effect (LSPR) with mechanical stresses, which change the distance between NPs. In this study, we attempted to detect the presence of gas utilizing the LSPR-related color change of a chain of Au NPs. The assembly of Au NPs, arranged in a chain shape, experienced a color change from dark blue to purple with a change in the distance between the NPs by applying a physical force, i.e., compression, stretching, and gas pressure. As the force of compression and the degree of stretching increased, the absorption wavelength shifted from doublet peaks at 650 and 550 nm to a singlet peak at 550 nm. Further, applying gas pressure caused an identical color change. With this result, we propose a method that could be applied to all gases that require detection based on gas pressure.

  • In this report, we describe the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) immobilized on pH. responsive, cross-linked poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) thin films, as a potential application for pH nanosensors. The methodology is based on the variation in surface plasmon resonance of immobilized AuNPs with changing the interparticle distances, caused by the swelling/deswelling of the pH responsive P4VP polymer films. The change in optical properties of the immobilized AuNPs in response to the pH of surrounding media was investigated by a simple yet powerful tool; UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The swelling of the P4VP chains at pH 2 causes an increase in the interparticle distances of immobilized AUNPS ($\sim20nm$) and hence leads to a blue shift of 48 nm in their surface plasmon resonance band peak. On the other hand, when the surrounding media was altered from pH 2 to 10, a red shift of absorption maxima was observed. The changes were rapid, and the effect was reversible. This system could prove to be useful in fabricating nanosensors for detecting the pH or pH changes of surrounding aqueous medium.

  • Nanogap interdigitated electrodes (NIDEs) can serve as an alternative platform for the biomolecular detection [1]. In this work, the NIDEs were adopted in a simple and sensitive detection of Pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA). The NIDEs were fabricated by the combination of photo and chemical lithography. Photolithographically-defined initial gap of about 200 nm was narrowed down to a few tens of nanometers by surface-initiated growth of the initial electrodes (chemical lithography) [2]. Bare silicon oxide surface between the electrodes was chemically modified to immobilize capturing antibodies and, after exposure to the samples, the device was immersed in a solution containing the probe-antibody-conjugated Au nanoparticles (Au NPs). The conductance change accompanied with the Au NP immobilization was interpreted as the existence of PspA. Detection limit of the measurements and further improvement of the detection efficiency were discussed with the results from I-V analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy.
