The biocompatibility and plasmonic properties of Au nanoparticles make them useful for photothermal therapy, drug delivery, imaging, and many other fields. This study demonstrated a novel, facile, economic, and green synthetic method to produce gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with spherical and triangular shapes were effectively synthesized using only Schisandra chenesis fruit extract as the capping and reducing agent. The shape of the AuNPs could be engineered simply by adjusting the molar concentration of HAuCl4 in the reaction mixture. The as-synthesized AuNPs were characterized using UV-VIS spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA). This study revealed that by using the HAuCl4 concentration in the AuNP synthesis, the shape and size of the AuNPs could be controlled by the concentration of HAuCl4 and Schisandra chinensis fruit extract as a surfactant. The as-synthesized AuNPs samples had sufficient colloidal stability without noticeable aggregation and showed the predominant growth of the (111) plane of face-centered cubic gold during the crystal growth. The catalytic efficiency of the AuNPs synthesized using Schisandra chenesis fruit extract was examined by monitoring the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol using Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis spectroscopy). The synthesized AuNPs showed good catalytic activity to reduce 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, revealing their practical usefulness.
Silica-coated Au with Ag, Co, Cu, and Ir bimetallic radioisotope nanoparticles were synthesized by neutron irradiation, after coating $SiO_2$ onto the bimetallic particles by the sol-gel St$\ddot{o}$ber process. Bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized by irradiating aqueous bimetallic ions at room temperature. Their shell and core diameters were recorded by TEM to be 100 - 112 nm and 20 - 50 nm, respectively. The bimetallic radioisotope nanoparticles' gamma spectra showed that they each contained two gamma-emitting nuclides. The nanoparticles could be used as radiotracers in petrochemical and refinery processes that involve temperatures that would decompose conventional organic radioactive labels.
The electrochromic properties of Au nanoparticles (NPs) incorporating poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiphene) (PEDOT) film were investigated. Trisodium citrate was used for stabilizing Au NPs to control the size. The capping molecules of the Au nanoparticles were exchanged from citrate to 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). Water was removed by centrifuge and Au NPs were redispersed in methanol (MeOH). Finally, we obtained ca. 11.7 nm diameter of Au NPs. The effects of 0.15 at% of Au NPs incorporation on the optical, electrical, and eletrochromic properties of PEDOT films were investigated. The electrical property and switching speed of Au/PEDOT film was slightly improved over that of PEDOT film because Au NPs play a hopping site role and affect packing density of the PEDOT chain. Through the ultra violet-visible spectra of PEDOT and Au/PEDOT films at -0.7 V (vs Ag/AgCl), blue shift of maximum absorption peak was observed from PEDOT (585.4 nm) to Au/PEDOT (572.2 nm) due to a shortening of conjugated length of PEDOT. The Au NPs interfered with the degree of conjugation and the maximum absorption peak was shifted to shorter wavelength.

Surface enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has attracted attention because the technique enables detection of various chemicals, even down to single molecular scale. Among the diverse candidates for SERS substrates, Au nanoparticles are considered promising due to their fine optical properties, chemical stability and ease of surface modification. Therefore, the fabrication and optical characterization of gold particles on solid supports is highly desirable. Such structures have potential as SERS substrates because the localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles is very sensitive to combined molecules and environments. In addition, it is well-known that the properties of Au nanoparticles are strongly dependent on their shape. In this work, arrays of shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were fabricated to exploit their enhanced and reproducible optical properties. First, shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were prepared via seed mediated solution-phase synthesis, including spheres, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra. Then, these shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were arranged on a PDMS substrate, which was nanopatterned using soft lithography of poly styrene particles. The Au nanoparticles were selectively located in a pattern of hexagonal spheres. In addition, the shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were arranged in various sizes of PDMS nanopatterns, which can be easily controlled by manipulating the size of polystyrene particles. Finally, the optical properties of the fabricated Au nanoparticle arrays were characterized by measuring surface enhanced Raman spectra with 4-nitrobenezenethiol.
We report on the luminescent enhancement of the $Er^{3+}$ -doped germano-silicate fibers by the incorporation of Au nanoparticles in the core of the fibers. The absorption peak appeared at 498.4nm was found due to the surface plasmon resonance of Au nanoparticles. The incorporated Au nanoparticles were found to be effective absorbents for hydroxyl groups to enhance the luminescence of $Er^{3+}$ ions when pumped with the 980nm laser diode.
A facile, seed-mediated preparation method of trimetallic Au@Pb@Pt core-shell nanoparticles is developed. Au nanoparticles are the template seeds onto which sequentially reduced Pb and Pt are deposited. The trimetallic core-shell structure is confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM and EDS analysis, and cyclic voltammetry. The trimetallic Au@Pb@Pt core-shell nanoparticles show high electrocatalytic activity for formic acid and methanol electrooxidation.

Gold catalysts supported on TiO2 have shown a unique catalytic behavior on CO oxidation, depending on surface effects. Particle size has an influence on the surface activity. To make monodisperse Au nanoparticles, organic capping ligands, such as alkylthiols, were used by a "greener" synthesis method [1,2] and Au nanoparticles were deposited on TiO2. However, organic capping ligands must be removed for high catalytic activities by the Au nanoparticles without changing the Au size [3]. We used UV ozone treatment to decompose thiol ligands. The samples have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to examine the surface modification by UV ozone treatment. We show the size distribution of the gold nanoparticles by light scattering analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Au/TiO2 have been prepared using the wetness impregnation method. The catalytic performance of CO oxidation over Au supported on TiO2 under oxidizing reaction conditions (40 Torr CO and 100 Torr O2) were tested. The results show that the catalytic activity depends on particle size and the time of UV ozone exposure, which suggests the role of sulfur bonding in determining the catalytic activity of Au/TiO2 catalysts.
Metal nano-crystals have been received much attentions owing to their excellent catalytic property and surface plasmon effect. In the last decade, many studies on synthesizing well-dispersive nanoparticles and on understanding their distinct physical properties have been performed. There were tremendous reports revealing the electrochemical activities and enhancement of surface plasmonic effect were dependent mainly on the size, shape, and composition. So far, most fabrication methods have been based on vacuum based deposition techniques, such as chemical vapor deposition and electron-beam evaporation, and then annealed them to transform into the nanoparticles. Recently, there were several reports regarding to the photoinduced nano-crystal synthesis as an effective way to produce the metal nanoparticles. In this study, we report synchrotron x-ray mediated synthesis of Au nanoparticles on ZnO nanowires. ZnO nanowires were fabricated by hydrothermal method, and then they were dip into a solution having Au clusters. Detailed structural evolution of Au nanoparticles was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence measurements. The results on formation of well-dispersive Au nanoparticles on ZnO nanowires will be presented.
$TiO_2$ nanowires were synthesized by hydrothermal method for the application to ethanol gas sensor. $TiO_2$ nanowires were decorated with Au nanoparticles to improve the sensitivity to ethanol gas. Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the synthesized nanowires had diameters and lengths of approximately 100 - 200 nm and a few micrometers, respectively. Size of the Au nanoparticles decorated on the $TiO_2$ nanowires was observed to be in the range of 10 - 20 nm. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the decorated nanowires were composed of anatase-, rutile-$TiO_2$, and Au. The sensitivities of $TiO_2$ nanowires sensors decorated with Au were approximately 1.1 - 3.65 times as high as those of as-synthesized $TiO_2$ sensors for the ethanol concentration of 5 - 100 ppm at $200^{\circ}C$. The mechanism of the improved ethanol gas sensing of the $TiO_2$ nanowires decorated with Au nanoparticles is discussed.

Plasmonic effects of gold and platinum alloy nanoparticles (Au-Pt NPs) and their comparison to size was studied. Various factors including ratios of gold and platinum salt, temperature, pH and time of addition of reducing agent were studied for their effect on particle size. The size of gold and platinum alloy nanoparticles increases with increasing concentration of Pt NPs. Temperature dependent synthesis of gold and platinum alloy nanoparticles shows decrease in size at higher temperature while at lower temperature agglomeration occurs. For pH dependent synthesis of Au-Pt nanoparticles, size was found to be increased by increase in pH from 4 to 10. Increasing the time of addition of reducing agent for synthesis of pure and gold-platinum alloy nanoparticles shows gradual increase in size as well as increase in heterogeneity of nanoparticles. The size and elemental analysis of Au-Pt nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and EDX techniques.
