  • Cobalt aluminate ($CoAl_2O_4$) is a highly stable pigment with excellent resistance to light, weather, etc., which has resulted in widespread use as a ceramic pigment. Due to the unique optical characteristics, $CoAl_2O_4$ is generally used as a coloring agent to decorate porcelain products, glass, paints and plastics. Here, $CoAl_2O_4$ pigments were synthesized by polymerized complex method and solid state reaction. Then $CoAl_2O_4$ pigment were grinded using the attrition milling with 1 mm size zirconia ball for 3 hours. The attrition milling process was performed at the constant speed of 800 rpm and ball to powder weight ratio (BPR) was 100 : 1. The characteristics of synthesized pigment were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size analyser (PSA) and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$. The XRD patterns of $CoAl_2O_4$ show single phase spinel structure. The particle size of $CoAl_2O_4$ measured by FE-SEM, TEM and PSA analysis was in the range of 100~200 nm. The blue color of obtained $CoAl_2O_4$ pigments could be confirmed through CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ measurement.

  • The corrosion resistance of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) materials were investigated for high-class steel manufacturing. Composite samples were fabricated by mixing $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO, mullite, spinel, and carbon. The raw materials were mixed with attrition milling, compacted in a uniaxial pressure of 200MPa and calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in $N_2$ atmosphere. The bulk density and apparent porosity of the calcined samples were measured by the liquid displacement method in water using Archimedes's principle. The corrosion resistance of the samples were measured by cup test with mold powder at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The microstructure and elemental analysis of samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), and X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD). The XRD result shows that the starting raw materials were crystalline phase. The microstructure of fabricated specimen was investigated before and after corrosion tests at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. $ZrO_2$-C composite showed good resistance in the slag corrosion test. Among the composite oxide materials, $ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$-C and $ZrO_2$-MgO-C showed better resistance than $ZrO_2$-C in the slag corrosion test. The diameter variation index of $ZrO_2$-C refractory was 16.1 at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The diameter variation index of the $ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$-C refractory was larger than that of the $ZrO_2$-C refractory at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h.

  • Although the finishing of ceramic restorations affects overall results of prosthetic procedures, the importance of finishing procedures has been underestimated. Finishing procedures have influence on the esthetics, and strength of ceramic restorations, and attrition of opposite tooth. For achieving the appropriate results of these factors, the overall understanding related to the finishing procedures of ceramic restoration is necessary.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) nanopowders were synthesized by coprecipitation and the sol-gel method to prepare a stable dispersion of ITO nano-colloid for antistatic coating of a display panel. The colloidal dispersions were prepared by attrition process with a vibratory milling apparatus using a suitable dispersant in organic solvent. The ITO coating solution was spin-coated on a glass panel followed by the deposition of partially hydrolyzed alkyl silicate as an over-coat layer. The double-layered coating films were characterized by measuring the sheet resistance and reflectance spectrum for antistatic and antireflective properties.

  • Although ceramic brackets have been used widely for improved esthetics during treatment, ceramic brackets have some inherent problems; brittleness, attrition of the opposing teeth and high frictional resistance. This study was performed to understand the frictional resistance of the ceramic brackets, as well as to be a helpful reference for finding the solutions to the problem of frictional resistance. Three different kinds of brackets were used; metal bracket, polycrystalline ceramic brackets with a metal slot to reduce the high frictional resistance and monocrystalline ceramic brackets. The brackets were tested with a $.019{\times}.025$ stainless steel wire with a second order angulation of $0^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$, and the static and kinetic frictional forces were measured on the universal testing machine. The results of this study showed that the ceramic brackets, especially the monocrystalline ceramic bracket without a metal slot, generated higher frictional resistance than the metal bracket, and the frictional resistance was increased as the angulation between the bracket slot and the wire increased. Therefore, the development of the ceramic bracket with reduced frictional resistance and the prevention of excessive crown tipping during orthodontic treatment will lead to the simultaneous attainment of more efficient and improved esthetic treatment goals.

  • Mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays a major role in cell growth, proliferation, polarity, differentiation, development, and controls transitioning between anabolic and catabolic states of the cell. It collects almost all extracellular and intracellular signals from growth factors, nutrients, and maintains cellular homeostasis, and is involved in several pathological conditions including, neurodegeneration, Type 2 diabetes (T2D), obesity, and cancer. In this review, we summarize current knowledge of upstream signaling of mTORC1 to explain etiology of T2D and hypertriglyceridemia, in which state, the role of telomere attrition is explained. We discuss if chronic inhibition of mTORC1 can reverse adverse effects resulting from hyperactivation. In conclusion, we suggest the regulatory roles of telomerase (TERT) and hexokinase II (HKII) on mTORC1 as possible remedies to treat hyperactivation. The former inhibits mTORC1 under nutrientrich while the latter under starved condition. We provide an idea of TOS (TOR signaling) motifs that can be used for regulation of mTORC1.

  • The amorphous $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$(at%) alloy strip was pulverized using a jet mill and an attrition mill to get flake-shaped powder. The flake powder was mixed with dielectric $BaTiO_3$ powder and its dispersant to increase the permittivity. The powders covered with dielectric powders and its dispersant were mixed with a binder and a solvent and then tape-cast to form sheets. The absorbing properties of the sheets were measured to investigate the roles of the dielectric powder and its dispersant. The results showed that the addition of $BaTiO_3$ powders and its dispersant improved the absorbing properties of the sheets noticeably. The powder sheet mixed with 5 wt% of $BaTiO_3$ powder and 1 wt% of dispersant showed the best electromagnetic wave absorption rate because of the increase of the permittivity and the electrical resistance.

  • Cellular senescence is a physiological process of irreversible cell-cycle arrest that contributes to various physiological and pathological processes of aging. Whereas replicative senescence is associated with telomere attrition after repeated cell division, stress-induced premature senescence occurs in response to aberrant oncogenic signaling, oxidative stress, and DNA damage which is independent of telomere dysfunction. Recent evidence indicates that cellular senescence provides a barrier to tumorigenesis and is a determinant of the outcome of cancer treatment. However, the senescence-associated secretory phenotype, which contributes to multiple facets of senescent cancer cells, may influence both cancer-inhibitory and cancer-promoting mechanisms of neighboring cells. Conventional treatments, such as chemo- and radiotherapies, preferentially induce premature senescence instead of apoptosis in the appropriate cellular context. In addition, treatment-induced premature senescence could compensate for resistance to apoptosis via alternative signaling pathways. Therefore, we believe that an intensive effort to understand cancer cell senescence could facilitate the development of novel therapeutic strategies for improving the efficacy of anticancer therapies. This review summarizes the current understanding of molecular mechanisms, functions, and clinical applications of cellular senescence for anticancer therapy.

  • Recently, from general machine parts and automobile parts using carbon steel to a mold, there has been efforts for improving durability and attrition resistance of these parts. Especially, heat treatment with laser which works fast and automatically can be used for the mass production with high quality. Moreover, local heat treatment can be used to handle with complex and precise parts. Accordingly, we analyzed hardening characteristics of carbon steel using the finite element method and compare the experimental results to have more reliability. We also proved the cause of thermal deformation with temperature and stress distribution by heat treatment. After these analysis and experimental, we found that each maximum hardness of the two tests was 728 Hv and 700 Hv, on condition of $1050^{\circ}C$ heating temperature, and 2 mm/sec laser speed. We also found that difference of surface stress-distribution was occurred, and this makes deformation mode up after heat treatment.
