It is an experimental study to improve the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emission gas in the gasoline engine. These characteristics are influenced by the fuel droplet size. To improve these characteristics, we make the ultrasonic atomization apparatus, and compare with the commercial carburetor. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Maximum atomization quantity is obtained by the vibrator of resonancy frequency 1.65MHz in the ultrasonic atomization apparatus. 2. With ultrasonic atomization apparatus, more than 99% of atomization rate can be obtained regardless of intake air temperature, velocity, and air-fuel ratio. 3. Atomization rate of the commercial carburetor increases with the air-fuel ratio and intake air temperature. 4. Difference of atomization rate between the ultrasonic atomization apparatus and the commercial carburetor increases with decreasing air-fuel ratio. 5. Droplet size is about 1-5.mu.m at the ultrasonic atomization apparatus, and 80-150.mu.m at the commercial carburetor, which indicates the ultrasonic atomization apparatus is excellent in atomization.
Coal-water mixture(CWM) fuel has attracted much attention as a substitute fuel for oil by which high economics and short-term commercialization might be realized in comparison with other coal conversion technologies. There are many factors that affect the CWM combustibility, such as the physical properties of CWM, the performance of atomizer and burner, operating conditions, capacity and load of the boiler, etc. Particularly, atomization quality is extremely critical to achieving acceptable carbon conversion efficiency of CWM fuel and maintaining the flame stability, because the coal particles in the CWM droplets burn as agglomerates. This paper presents the R&D results about the CWM atomization characteristics, including the significance of CWM atomization the R&D results about the CWM atomization characteristics, including the significance of CWM atomization quality, the atomization and combustion mechanism, the type of CWM atomizer, size and size distribution of CWM droplets and some factors that influence the atomization performance.

In this paper, the spray atomization characteristics of a gasoline direct-injection injector were investigated experimentally and numerically. To visualize the developing spray process, a laser sheet method with a Nd :YAG laser was utilized. The microscopic atomization characteristics such as the droplet size and velocity distribution were also obtained by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system at the 5 ㎫ of injection pressure. With the experiments, the calculations of spray atomization were conducted by using the KIVA code with the LISA-DDB breakup model. Based on the agreement with the experimental results, the prediction accuracy of LISA-DDB breakup model was investigated in terms of the spray shapes, spray tip penetration, SMD distribution, and axial mean velocity. The results of this study provides the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the spray atomization, and prediction accuracy of the LISA-DDB model.
This paper describes the macroscopic behavior and atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline swirl injector in direct-injection gasoline engine. The global spray behavior of fuel injector was visualized by shadowgraph technique. The atomization characteristics of gasoline spray such as mean diameter and mean velocity of droplets were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. The macroscopic visualization and experiment of particle measurement on the fuel spray were investigated at 7 and 10 MPa of injection pressure under different spray cone angle. The results of this work show that the geometry of injector was more dominant over the macroscopic characteristics of spray than the fuel injection pressure and injection duration. As for the atomization characteristics, the increase of injection pressure resulted in the decrease of fuel droplet diameter and the atomization characteristics differed as to the spray cone angle. The most droplets had under $25{\mu}m$ diameter and for the large droplets(upper $40{\mu}m$) as the spray grew the atomization presses were very slow. Comparison results between the measured droplet distribution and the droplet distribution functions revealed that the measured droplet distribution is very closed to the Normal distribution function and Nukiyama-Tanasawa's function.
In this work, the mixture formation and atomization characteristics of biodiesel fuel were reviewed under various test conditions for the optimization of compression-ignition engine fueled with biodiesel. To achieve these, the effect of nozzle caviting flow, group-hole nozzle geometry and injection strategies on the injection rate, spray evolution and atomization characteristics of biodiesel were studied by using spray characteristics measuring system. At the same time, the fuel heating system was installed to obtain the effect of fuel temperature on the biodiesel fuel atomization. It was revealed that cavitation in the nozzle orifice promoted the atomization performance of biodiesel. The group-hole nozzle geometry and split injection strategies couldn't improve it, however, the different orifice angles which were diverged and converged angle of a group-hole nozzle enhanced the biodiesel atomization. It was also observed that the increase of fuel temperature induced the quick evaporation of biodiesel fuel droplet.
Rotary atomizer is widely used in practical application ranging from combustion, cooling, spray drying, agriculture, chemical system. Rotary cup atomizer has some advantages such as extreme versatility and liquid atomization successfully varying widely in viscosity. In rotary atomization, the feed liquid is centrifugally accelerated to high velocity and the liquid extends over the rotating surface as a thin film before being discharged into an atmosphere. The degree of rotary atomization depends upon peripheral speed, feed rate, liquid properties and atomizer design. An important asset is that thickness and uniformity of the liquid sheet can readily be controlled by regulating the liquid flow rate and the rotational speed. LDPA(Laser Diffraction Particle Analyser) and image aquisition system are used to measure drop size distribution and spray pattern. The atomization characteristics of the rotary cup atomizer is investigated experimentally by varing the liquid feed rate, rotary cup speed and air velocity for atomization. As a results, the effect of air velocity on the atomization characteristics such as drop size and spray uniformity is considerably greater than variation of those with liquid feed rate.
In a fuel injection engine, atomization of liquid fuel and mixture formation process has influenced(or affected) directly on the engine performance and pollutant emission. In this study, the characteristics of fuel spray and the behaviors of secondary atomization developed at the downstream of the valves were investigated using an image processing method. Solid and perforated valves are chosen in order to evaluate the valve performance in terns of air flow rate, valve opening angle and valve shape. Experimental results clearly indicate that the spray atomization quality can be improved by increasing the perforated rat io and the blockage rat io in the perforated valve, the characteristics of spray atomization is improved by using the perforated valve with high perforated rat io and blockage ratio.
In this study, experimental study on atomization characteristics of the fuel spray impinging on the wall was at different wall distances and angles of wall inclination. The fuel injection system was composed based on the common rail system. and the injection signal was synchronized by the delay generator. The atomization characteristics of the injected spray were analyzed in terms of the SMD and velocities which were measured by using the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. It is revealed that the free spray is atomized actively above 50mm form the injector tip. In the cases of the impinged spray, the 5MD and velocity of the impinged spray are smaller than those of the free spray. The impinged spray has the maximum near the 35mm of the radial distance from the injector axis, and the atomization performance is enhanced with the decrease of the wall distance.
The purpose of this research is to find the fundamental data for the design and optimum operation condition for the disk atomization comparing the atomization characteristics of the modified straight vane type disk atomizer and the cup type atomizer widely used in the field of spray dry. First, the experimental comparison of the characteristics of $Na_2SO_4$ atomization has been carried out using the cup type disk atomizer and the three kinds of vane type atomization designed specially for the experiment. After the comparison of the experimental data of the $Na_2SO_4$ and raw milk have been conducted using vane type atomizer.
An experimental and numerical study was performed to investigate the macroscopic and microscopic atomization characteristics of high-speed diesel spray issued from the common-rail injection system. For the experiments, spray visualization system and a phase Doppler particle analyzer system were utilized to obtain the spray atomization characteristics such as the process of spray development, spray tip penetration, and SMD distribution. In order to analyze the process of spray atomization with KIVA-3 code, the TAB breakup model is changed to the KH-DDB competition model, which assumes the competition between the wave instability and droplet deformation causes the droplet breakup above the breakup length. The calculated results were also compared with the experiments in terms of spray tip penetration and SMD distribution. The results provide the process of spray development, axial and radial distribution of SMD, and calculated overall SMD as a function of time after start of injection.
