The spot welds of Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels are prone to interfacial failure and narrow welding current range. Hard microstructures in weld metal and heat affected zone arenormally considered as one of the main reason to accelerate the interfacial failure mode. There fore, detailed observation of weld microstructure for TRIP steels should be made to ensure better weld quality. However, it is difficult to characterize the microstructure, which has similar color, size, and shape using the optical or electron microscopy. The atomic force microscope (AFM) can help to analyze microstructure by using different energy levels for different surface roughness. In this study, the microstructures of resistance spot welds for AHSS are analyzed by using AFM with measuring the differences in average surface roughness. It has been possible to identify the different phases and their topographic characteristics and to study their morphology using atomic force microscopy in resistance spot weld TRIP steels. The systematic topographic study for each region of weldments confirmed the presence of different microstructures with height of 350nm for martensite, 250nm for bainite, and 150nm for ferrite, respectively.
The electrical characterization of Au islands on TiO2 at nanometer scale (as a Schottky nanodiode) has been studied with conductive atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum. The diverse sizes of the Au islands were formed by using self-assembled patterns on n-type TiO2 semiconductor film using the Langmuir-Blodgett process. Local conductance images showing the current flowing through the TiN coated AFM probe to the surface of the Au islands on TiO2 was simultaneously obtained with topography, while a positive sample bias is applied. The boundary of the Au islands revealed a higher current flow than that of the inner Au islands in current AFM images, with the forward bias presumably due to the surface plasmon resonance. The nanoscale Schottky barrier height of the Au/TiO2 Schottky nanodiode was obtained by fitting the I-V curve to the thermionic emission equation. The local resistance of the Au/TiO2 nanodiode appeared to be higher at the larger Au islands than at the smaller islands. The results suggest that conductive atomic force microscopy can be used to reveal the I-V characterization of metal size dependence and the electrical effects of surface plasmon on a metal-semiconductor Schottky diode at nanometer scale.

This study concerns the tribological behaviors of ultra-thin DLC coating with 3 nm thickness deposited in a mixed gas of argon + 20 % hydrogen as a function of humidity. Reciprocating wear tests employing a micro wear tester were performed under various normal loads and relative humidity in air environment. The chemical composition of the original and worn surfaces were studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It showed that the ultra-thin DLC coating exhibited low friction with enough wear stability at low normal load (0.18 N) and its tribological behavior was strongly dependent on the humidity. The sample surfaces before and after the test were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Capillary force and meniscus areas were discussed in order to explain the influence of humidity on the friction force.
The storing ability of information of optical disks directly depends on the physical property of recording unit cells. It means that the degradation of optical disks ultimately causes the loss of the physical and chemical properties of recording unit cells and leads also information, too. We investigated the degradation and life time of optical disks which tell us the longevity of the preservation of information. Optical disks were aged using the accelerated aging system and studied by optical reflectivity spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy(AFM), and the preservation environment of electronic media in National central library of Korea also were analysed. Results show that the double reflective coated optical disks have good preservation of recording information but revealed some deformation of dye area in the AFM images. It means that we should include the mechanical and chemical degradation of the optical disks in the life time expectation evaluation.

Here we show how by processing energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) data obtained using highly sensitive, new generation EDS detectors in the AZtec LayerProbe software we can obtain data of sufficiently high quality to non-destructively measure the number of layers in two-dimensional (2D) $MoS_2$ and $MoS_2/WSe_2$ and thereby enable the characterization of working devices based on 2D materials. We compare the thickness measurements with EDS to results from atomic force microscopy measurements. We also show how we can use electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to address fabrication challenges of 2D materials. Results from EBSD analysis of individual flakes of exfoliated $MoS_2$ obtained using the Nordlys Nano detector are shown to aid a better understanding of the exfoliation process which is still widely used to produce 2D materials for research purposes.
Isotactic polypropylene (PP) surfaces were modified with argon and oxygen plasmas using a radiofrequency (RF) glow discharge at 240 mTorr and 40 W. The changes in topography and surface structure were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in conjunction with specular reflectance of infrared (IR) microspectroscopy. Under our operating conditions, the AFM image analysis revealed that longer plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the PP surface, regardless of the kind of plasma employed, but the topography was dependent on the nature of the gases. Specular reflectance IR spectroscopic analysis indicated that the constant removal of surface material was an important ablative aspect when using either plasma, but the nature of the ablative behavior and the resultant aging effects were clearly dependent on the choice of plasma. The use of argon plasma resulted in a negligible aging effect; in contrast, the use of oxygen plasma caused a noticeable aging effect, which was due to reactions of trapped or isolated radicals with oxygen in air, and was partly responsible for the increased surface area caused by ablation. The use of oxygen plasma is believed to be an advantageous approach to modifying polymeric materials with functionalized surfaces, e.g., for surface grafting of unsaturated monomers and incorporating oxygen-containing groups onto PP.
We report a top-down approach based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) local anodic oxidation for the fabrication of the nano-pattern field effect transistors (FETs). AFM anodic oxidation is relatively a simple process in atmosphere at room temperature but it still can result in patterns with a high spatial resolution, and compatibility with conventional silicon CMOS process. In this work, we study nano-pattern FETs for various cross-bar distance value D, from ${\sim}0.5\;{\mu}m$ to $1\;{\mu}m$. We compare the optical characteristics of the patterned FETs and of the reference FETs based on both 2-dimensional simulation and experimental results for the wavelength from 100 nm to 900 nm. The simulated the drain current of the nano-patterned FETs shows significantly higher value incident the reference FETs from ${\sim}1.7\;{\times}\;10^{-6}A$ to ${\sim}2.3\;{\times}\;10^{-6}A$ in the infrared range. The fabricated surface texturing of photo-transistors may be applied for high-efficiency photovoltaic devices.

The resistive switching behaviors of Pt nanodisk on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single-crystal have been studied with conductive atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum. The nanometer sizes of Pt disks were formed by using self-assembled patterns of silica nanospheres on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single-crystal semiconductor film using the Langmuir-Blodgett, followed by the metal deposition with e-beam evaporation. The conductance images shows the spatial mapping of the current flowing from the TiN coated AFM probe to Pt nanodisk surface on Nb:STO single-crystal substrate, that was simultaneously obtained with topography. The bipolar resistive switching behaviors of Pt nanodisk on Nb:STO single-crystal junctions was observed. By measuring the current-voltage spectroscopy after the forming process, we found that switching behavior depends on the charging and discharging of interface trap state that exhibit the high resistive state (HRS) and low resistive state (LRS), respectively. The results suggest that the bipolar resistive switching of Pt/Nb:STO single-crystal junctions can be performed without the electrochemical redox reaction between tip and sample with the potential application of nanometer scale resistive switching devices.
Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy (Ultrasonic-AFM) has been used to investigate the elastic property of the ultra-thin coating layer in a thin-film system. The modified Hertzian theory was applied to predict the contact resonance frequency through accurate theoretical analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the cantilever. We coat 200 nm thick Aluminum and Titanium thin films on the substrate using the DC Magnetron sputtering method. The amplitude and phase of the contact resonance frequency of a vibrating cantilever varies in response to the local stiffness constant. Ultrasonic-AFM images were obtained using the variations in the elastic property of the materials. The morphology of the surface was clearly observed in the Ultrasonic-AFM images, but was barely visible in the topography. This research demonstrates that Ultrasonic-AFM is a promising technique for visualizing the distribution of local stiffness in the nano-scale thin coatings.
Objectives: To examine the surface topography of intact WaveOne (WO; Dentsply Sirona Endodontics) and WaveOne Gold (WOG; Dentsply Sirona Endodontics) nickel-titanium rotary files and to evaluate the presence of alterations to the surface topography after root canal preparations of severely curved root canals in molar teeth. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight severely curved canals of extracted molar teeth were divided into 2 groups (n = 24/each group). In group 1, the canals were prepared using WO and in group 2, the canals were prepared using WOG files. After the preparation of 3 root canals, instruments were subjected to atomic force microscopy analysis. Average roughness and root mean square values were chosen to investigate the surface features of endodontic files. The data was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tamhane's tests at 5% significant level. Results: The surface roughness values of WO and WOG files significantly changed after use in root canals (p < 0.05). The used WOG files exhibited higher surface roughness change when compared with the used WO files (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Using WO and WOG Primary files in 3 root canals affected the surface topography of the files. After being used in root canals, the WOG files showed a higher level of surface porosity value than the WO files.
