One technique for determining dry acid deposition fluxes involves measurement of time - averaged ambient concentrations of dry acid deposition species using filter packs (FP) coupled with estimates of mean deposition velocities for the exposure period. A critical problem associated with filter pack data comparisons between various field sampling networks is the use of diverse sampling flow rates and duration protocols. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of varying sampling flow rates, from 1.5 to 10 standard liters per minute, on total nitrate and sulfate measurements of specific dry acid deposition species . Collocated FP samplers were used to determine sampling and analysis data reproducibility and representativeness . Ambient air samples were simultaneously collected using groups of filter packs operated at various flow rates over identical 7 day periods. The species measured were sulfur dioxide, particulate sulfate , nitric acid and particulate nitrate. Statistical results (ANOVA; alpha level 5%) showed that neither the low nor high sampling flow rates caused a significant difference in the measurements of total sulfate and adjusted total nitrate (ATN) . However, it was concluded that for high flow rate sampling measurements, total nitrate (TN) could be affected during extended sampling durations because of potential nitric acid overloading and breakthrough. Although the previous workers (Costello, 1990; Quillian, 1990) used much higher sampling flow rates (~ 17 sLpm) than employed here, it was assumed that for a high loading (> 50$\mu\textrm{g}$ HNO$_3$) of nitric acid on the Nylon filters, a significant fraction (~10%) of nitric acid could pass through the Nylon filters and be collected on the carbonate impregnated filters. It was concluded that even at the highest sampling flow rate employed (10 sLpm) at the Cary Forest site, nitric acid breakthrough was less than 10% of the total HNO$_3$ collected. However, for a heavily polluted urban airshed or with longer sampling times , higher filter loadings could result in substantial nitric acid breakthrough and HNO$_3$concentrations would be underestimated.
Total(=wet+dry) atmospheric depositions were collected by filtration-sampling method at 17 sampling sites of the coal-fired power plant area from September 1999 to January 2000. The soluble and insoluble fractions of deposition were also measured to investigate a suitability of simplified collection method for a long-term monitoring of total deposition. In the study, the 50% of sampled soluble fractions showed the electric conductivity (E.C.) of below 50 $\mu$S/cm and the 42% of them showed the lower pH than 5.0. The monthly mean fluxes of water soluble ionic components; S $O_4$$^{2-}$, C $l^{[-10]}$ , N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , N $a^{+}$, N $H_4$$^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ were 168.4 kg/k $m^2$.month, 100.5 kg/k $m^2$.month, 88.6kg/k $m^2$.month, 31.3kg/k $m^2$.month, 25.6 kg/k $m^2$.month, 13.3 kg/k $m^2$.month, 8.7 kg/k $m^2$.month, 43.1kg/k $m^2$.month, respectively. The mean ionic concentration of all sample(n=79) was 314 $\mu$eq/ι, with contributions of 24.2% and 23.0% by [nss-C $a^{2+}$] and [nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$]. The ratio of [N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ ]/[nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$] and [N $H_4$-C $a^{2+}$] were found to be 0.52 and 0.68, respectively.espectively.
This study describes (1) the impact of positive sampling artifacts caused by not only a filter-based sampling, but also a denuder-based sampling in the determination of particle-phase organic carbon (POC), (2) the effect of sample flow rate on positive artifacts, and (3) an optimum flow rate that provides a minimized negative sampling artifact for the denuder-based sampling method. To achieve the goals of this study, four different sampling media combinations were employed: (1) Quartz filter-alone (Q-alone), (2) quartz filter behind quartz-fiber filter (QBQ), (3) quartz filter and quartz filter behind Teflon filter (Q-QBT), and (4) quartz filter behind carbon-based denuder (Denuder-Q). The measurement of ambient POC was carried out in an urban area. In addition, to determine gas-phase OC (GOC) removal efficiency of the denuder, a Teflon filter and a quartz filter were deployed upstream and downstream of the denuder, respectively with varying sample flow rates: 5, 10, 20, and 30 LPM. It was found that Q-alone sampling configuration showed a higher POC than QBQ, Q-QBT, and Denuder-Q by 12%, 28%, and 23%, respectively at a sample flow rate of 20 LPM due to no correction for positive artifact caused by adsorption of GOC onto the filter. A lower quantity of GOC was collected from the backup quartz filter on QBQ than that from Q-QBT. This was because GOC was not in equilibrium with that adsorbed on the front quartz filter of QBQ during the sampling period. It is observed that the loss of particle number and mass across the denuder increases with decreasing sample flow rate. The contribution o f positive arti facts to POC decreased with increasing sample flow rate, showing 29%, 25%, and 22% for 10, 20, and 30 LPM, respectively. The 20 LPM turns out to be the optimum sample flow rate for both filter and denuder-based POC sampling.
This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of a sampling and analytical methodology for the measurement of selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ambient air. VOCs were determined by the adsorbent tube sampling and automatic thermal desorption coupled with GC/FID and GC/MSD analysis. Target analytes were aromatic VOCs, including BTEX, 1,3,5-and 1,2,4,-trimethylbenzenes(TMBs), and naphthalene. The methodology was investigatedwith a wide range of performance criteria such as repeatability, linearity, lower detection limits, collection efficiency, thermal conditioning, breakthrough volume and calibration methods using internal and external standards. standards. Stability of samples collected on adsorbent tubes during storage was also investigated. In addition, the sampling and analytical method developed during this study was applied to real samples duplicately collected in various indoor and outdoor environments. Precisions for the duplicate samples and distributed volume samples appeared to be well comparable with the performance criteria recommended by USEPA TO-17. The audit accuracy was estimated by inter-lab comparison of both duplicate samples and standard materials between the two independent labs. The overall precision and accuracy of the method were estimated to be within 30% for major aromatic VOCs such as BTEX. This study demonstrated that the adsorbent sampling and thermal desorption method can be reliably applied for the measurement of BTEX in ppb levels frequently occurred in common indoor and ambient environments.
There has been relatively a few studies that focused on evaluation of uncertainty for standard methods by which criteria pollutants are analyzed in ambient air. Especially, uncertainty evaluation has not been made yet for sampling and analysis of airborne NO$_2$. Ambient NO$_2$ has been thought to be a major criteria pollutant worldwide because of the potential of ozone formation as well as of its own toxicity. In this study, we tried to assess uncertainties associated with the every step of sampling and of analytical procedure of Griess-Saltzman method. Quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) were also emphasized with the uncertainty characterization. The use of Griess-Saltzman method for ambient NO$_2$ analysis showed very uniform daily concentration distribution with the mean of 10.8 ppb and the standard deviation of 1.08ppb during the sampling period. However, seven daily samples collected at the same sampling time and place exhibited highly different concentration distribution. Therefore, we evaluated uncertainties associated with sampling and analysis through the precise application of ISO Guide. Estimates of expanded uncertainties for a total of 62 samples fell in a relatively broad range of 5.17% to 11.85%. On the other hand. the expanded uncertainties were smaller for the high concentration range of greater than 15ppb.
It is very important to measure atmospheric particles and evaluate the characteristics of them since aerosol can influence atmospheric environment, climate, and health. Satellite, aircraft, radio sonde are usually used to measure the vertical distribution of particle properties, temperature, humidity, and pressure. Although the method of using an aircraft is favorable to collect the horizontal distribution of the particles, but unadaptable to measure the vertical distribution of the particles. However, all-in-one balloon particle sampler system can collect particles depending on each altitude controling the balloon by winch. In this research, we performed the air sampling on the TEM grids using house made light weight impactor at the altitude of 300m and 900m. The collected particles were analyzed using TEM/EDS.
In order to provide basis for an accurate concentration determination of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in air, four different institutions participated in simultaneous measurements of several VOC species under the experimental scheme of the Measurement and Analysis Division(MAD) of the Korea Society for Atmospheric Environment(KOSAE). Two types of experiments were undertaken by collecting and analyzing ambient air samples from the 7th floor of Natural Science Building, Han Tang University during two day periods of the late May 1998. The first typer of experiment was conducted as five consecutive experiments at 2-hour intervals by two institutions. On the other hand. the second type of experiment was performed as two -10hr sampling by three different institutions. The data obtained from different type of experiments were examined using various statistical approaches. In general, the results of these experiments indicated that the VOC data produced by a number of Korean institutions be fairly agreeable.
Artifacts due to inter-particle and gas-particle interactions during PM2.5 sampling were quantified by comparing the measurement results between the annular denuder-filterpack system and the filterpack system without denuder. Measurements were carried in Seoul for 10 days in each season; Nov. 2004, Jan. 2005, Mar. 2005, and Jul. 2005, respectively. In each day, two 12-h samples were obtained. The concentrations of nitrate and chloride showed seasonal variations mainly due to the availability of ammonium to neutralize nitrate or chloride. Nitrates and chloride losses were prominent in summer. Since most of ammonia was used to neutralize sulfuric acid and formed ammonium sulfate in summer, nitrate and chloride could not exist in particles and ammonium loss was smaller than other seasons.
This study describes the impact of positive sampling artifact caused by a filter-based sampling in the determination of ambient organic carbon (OC). Three different sampling media combinations were employed for this investigation: (1) Quartz filter-alone (Q-alone), (2) quartz filter behind quartz-fiber filter (QBQ), and (3) quartz filter and quartz filter behind Teflon filter (Q-QBT). The measurement of ambient OC was carried out at a semi-urban site near oceanside at the end of November of 2008. It was found that Q-alone sampling configuration resulted in a higher OC than QBQ and Q-QBT by 14% and 28%, respectively due to no correction for positive artifact caused by adsorption of gas-phase OC onto the filter. A lower quantity of OC was collected from the backup quartz filter on QBQ than that from Q-QBT. A possible explanation is that the front quartz filter of QBQ was not fully saturated with gas-phase OC during the sampling period, allowing smaller amount of gas-phase OC to reach the backup quartz filter. The contribution of positive artifact to $PM_{2.5}$ mass was approximately 2.15 ${\mu}g/m^3$ which is equivalent to 6% in terms of Q-QBT sampling configuration. The positive artifact was found to be more dominated during summer than during winter, showing temperature dependence. It was concluded that Q-QBT sampling configuration offers less impact of positive artifact on ambient OC sampling than QBQ in quantification of OC.
