  • We developed a CCD camera that can observe wide fields on the sky. We tested the field of views using various lenses. For cooling the CCD chip, we used a thermoelectric cooling device and tested the cooling efficiency. This camera will continuously observe a part of the sky. The data from the camera will be used to decide the current weather condition by the real-time star counting program (SCount) which will be developed later.

  • A numerical forecasting models usually predict future states by performing time integration considering fixed static time-steps. A time-step that is too long can cause model instability and failure of forecast simulation, and a time-step that is too short can cause unnecessary time integration calculations. Thus, in numerical models, the time-step size can be determined by the CFL (Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy)-condition, and this condition acts as a necessary condition for finding a numerical solution. A static time-step is defined as using the same fixed time-step for time integration. On the other hand, applying a different time-step for each integration while guaranteeing the stability of the solution in time advancement is called an adaptive time-step. The adaptive time-step algorithm is a method of presenting the maximum usable time-step suitable for each integration based on the CFL-condition for the adaptive time-step. In this paper, the adaptive time-step algorithm is applied for the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) to determine suitable parameters used for the adaptive time-step algorithm through the monthly verifications of 10-day simulations (during January and July 2017) at about 12 km resolution. By comparing the numerical results obtained by applying the 25 second static time-step to KIM in Supercomputer 5 (Nurion), it shows similar results in terms of forecast quality, presents the maximum available time-step for each integration, and improves the calculation efficiency by reducing the number of total time integrations by 19%.

이단미생물반응조에서 혼합 VOCs의 생분해 특성 (Biological Removal of a VOC Mixture in a Two-stage Bioreactor)

  • A two-stage bioreactor, which consists of a biotrickling filter module and a biofilter module in series, was investigated for the enhanced treatment of a VOC mixture, toluene and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Throughout the experiments, the overall inlet loading rate was maintained at approximately $43g/m^3/hr$, but the inlet ratios of the VOCs were modified. The experimental results showed that the different ratios of the VOC mixture resulted in changes of overall removal efficiencies, elimination capacities (ECs) and microbial accumulation on the surface of each packing material. The ratio of inlet toluene to MEK at 50 : 150 was found to be most effective in terms of the overall removal efficiency, because, at this condition, MEK (i.e., the hydrophilic compound) was mostly removed in the biotrickling filter module and the following biofilter module was used to remove toluene. It was also found that when the inlet loading rate of the VOC mixture was serially increased stepwise within short-term periods, the ECs for toluene dropped significantly but the ECs for MEK increased at the ratio of the VOC mixture. These results implied that substrate interaction and/or substrate preferable utilization might have an effect on the biological removal of each compound in the two-stage bioreactor; therefore, the bioreactor should be operated in the condition where the substrate interaction could be minimized in order to maximize overall performance of the two-stage bioreactor.

Removal Characteristics of Benzene in Dielectric Barrier Discharge Process

  • The electrical and chemical properties of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) process for the benzene removal were investigated. The benzene removal was initiated with the applied voltage higher than the discharge onset value. The removal efficiency over 95 % was obtained at approximately 1.6 kJ lite $r^{r-1}$ of the electrical energy density. The increase of the inlet concentration decreased the removal efficiency. However, the benzene decomposition rate increased with the inlet concentration . While the increase of the gas retention time enhanced the removal efficiency, the decomposition rate decreased. Identification of the optimum condition between the decomposition rate and the removal efficiency is required for field applications of the DBD process.s.

  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae was examined for growth characteristics and morphology when cultivated in several media supplemented with a variety of sera and under different atmospheric conditions. different formula of the medium as well as different sources of lot numbers of the serum in the same medium exhibited varying effects on growth rate and adherence. When the organisms were cultivated in SSR-2 medium in a normal atmospheric environment or under a facultative anaerobic condition provided with carbon dioxide, they developed filamentous cells with heavy growth, whereas mainly round-shaped cells were produced under strict anaerobic conditions of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Both morphologies of the organism were transformed by switching the incubation environments. An inverted phasecontrast microscopy using modified petri dishes was excellent to observe single cells and useful to follow the development of the cells. Growth, turbidity, and pneumoniae colonies developed on a solid medium and produced clear when overlaid with sheep blood agar.

2010년 3월 20일 부산지역에 발생한 극심한 황사의 에어로솔 농도 분포 특성 (Characterization of Aerosol Concentration during Severe Asian Dust Period at Busan, Korea in 20 March 2010)

  • Asian dust (or yellow sand) occurring mainly in spring in East Asia is affected by the distribution of weather systems. This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of suspended particulate for Asian dust at Busan, Korea in 20 March 2010, which was one of the extreme case for the last 10 years. There was used the data of weather chart, satellite, automatic weather system (AWS), $PM_{10}$, laser particle counter (LPC), and backward trajectories model. In synoptically, the high pressure was located in the northwestern part and low pressure was located in the northeastern part of Korea. The strong westerly winds from surface to upper layer makes it possible to move air masses rapidly. Air masses passing through Gobi Desert in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia plateau covered the entire Korean peninsula. As the results of aerosol analysis, $PM_{10}$ concentration at Gudeok mountain in Busan was recorded $2,344{\mu}g/m^3$ in 2300 LST 20 March 2010 and their concentration was markedly increased at coarse mode particle. In surface condition, westerly wind about 3 ~ 5 m/s was dominant and small particles of $0.3{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$ were distributed on the whole. In heavy metal components analysis, the elements from the land was predominated.

Corrosion on Steel Surfaces with Sea-Salt Deposition and Artificial Seawater Film

  • The conditions to simulate the atmospheric corrosion behavior in the laboratory were investigated to clarify atmospheric corrosion mechanism of steel material in coastal area, For airborne sea salt and artificial seawater droplet, the various behaviors were observed by optical microscope, The particle size of the dried airborne sea salt was about $20{\mu}m$, and was about 1/10 compared with the artificial seawater droplet. Though the airborne sea salt represented the same behavior as the thermodynamic water absorption, the behavior of the artificial seawater droplet deviated from the results of the thermodynamic calculation, It is concluded that the water absorption behavior is influenced by the particle size of the dried sea salt. The corrosion behaviors of carbon steels were observed under the deposited condition of airborne sea salt and artificial seawater droplet. The corrosion behaviors showed a different trend, indicating that the corrosion behavior depended on the particle size of the dried sea salt. The corrosion in the actual environrnent progressed greater than that in the chamber. Furthermore, the summer showed the greater corrosion than the spring. It is found that the corrosion behaviors are attributed to the influence of the environmental factors.

1993년 4월 22-24일에 관측된 황사현상에 대한 종관분석 (Synoptic analyses of the Yellow Sand Events observed over the Korean peninsula during 22-24 April, 1993)

  • The Yellow Sand Events observed over the Korean peninsula during 22-24 April, 1993 were examined using the synoptic data and GMS visible image to identify the transport path of the Yellow Sand and the main factor governing the duration of the Yellow Sand phenomenon. The 850 hPa convergence chart and the 700 hPa trajectory analyses of the air mass laden with Yellow Sand particles suggested that the Yellow Sand particles observed over Korea were probably transported from the Gobi Desert and the Loess Plateau. The duration of the Yellow Sand Events was about 35-40 hours rather shorter than normal as the high pressure system centered near the Mongolia region moved rapidly toward the Yellow Sea, which drove away the Yellow Sand particles over the Korean peninsula toward the Japan Islands, furthermore the low-level stratification of the air mass over the Korean penishula showed the unstable atmospheric condition leading to atmospheric diffusion of the particles. The trajectory analyses and the GMS visible image indicated that the long-range transport of the air mass laden with the Yellow Sand particles of this case was more dependent on the 700 hPa air flow than on the 850 hPa air flow.

  • In this study, the activity and structural properties of catalysts prepared by mechanochemical method under dry condition were studied. A dry milling was used as a mechanochemical method. The precursors of vanadium were $NH_4VO_3$ and $V_2O_5$. The activity and characterization of the catalysts prepared by dry milling were compared with those prepared by impregnation. In addition, the correlation between the catalytic activity and the structural characteristics was observed through XRD, Raman, and $H_2$-TPR analysis. As a result, the monomeric vanadate species exhibited excellent redox characteristics, which were confirmed to be related to the catalytic activity.

역전층이 영동 지역의 활강풍에 미치는 영향에 관한 민감도 수치실험 연구 (A Numerical Sensitivity Experiment of the Downslope Windstorm over the Yeongdong Region in Relation to the Inversion layer of Temperature)

  • A sensitivity study has been performed using ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) version 5.2.10 in a downslope windstorm case of 12-13 February 2006. The purpose of this study was to find out the role of the inversion layer of temperature mainly in relation to the strength of the downslope winds over the Yeongdong region located downstream of the Taebaek mountains. Under the conditions of N (Brunt-$V{\ddot{a}}is{\ddot{a}}la$ frequency)=0.008 and N=0.016, the effects of the presence of the inversion layer, its variation of height of the layer, and the depth of the layer were identified. The sensitivity experiments suggested that the inversion layer effected the downstream wind speed of the mountains under both conditions of N=0.008 and N=0.016, and notably when the inversion layer was located near the mountain crest the downstream wind speed of the mountains was strong (~ $27ms^{-1}$) only under the condition of N=0.016. In addition, when the atmosphere was rather stable (N=0.016) and the depth of the layer was relatively thin (765 m) the downstream wind speed of the mountains was the strongest (~ $30ms^{-1}$) among the sensitivity experiments.
