The ozone layer monitoring program of the Global Environment Laboratory at Yonsei University in Seoul, established as one of the Global Ozone Observing System($GO_3OS$) of the World Meteorological Organization(WMO), has been carried out daily by measuring total ozone and its vertical distribution using a Dobson Ozone Spectrophotometer(Beck #124) since 1984. In this paper, we review the organization and the historical background of ozone measurements in Korea, describe data acquisition and analysis systems, and briefly summarize the results from our ozone observations.

Performance of photochemical models and their response to emission controls are heavily dependent on the inputs to the model. Two key inputs to these models are accurate meteorological and emissions data. But they can contain significant errors which contribute to uncertainties in photochemical simulation (Kumar and Russell, 1996; Sistla et al., 1996; Pielke and Uliase, 1998; Barna and Lamb, 2000; Nelson L. Seaman, 2000: Hogrefe et al., 2001; Biswas et al., 2001).(omitted)

Atmospheric particles have a great deal of influences on the climate and the air quality, which change the living and industrial environments of a specific area. Especially, the suspended dusts and aerosols can often have a harmful influences on workers' health, equipments at working places. For this reasons, the measurement of atmospheric particle size distributions is of considerable current interest. (omitted)

In order to clarify the urbanization intensity of Daegu Metropolitan and its characteristics, comparative study on the variation of the cooling rate of two different sites was carried out using observation data for 40 years by Korea Meteorological Adminstration. Daegu Metropolitan and Chupungnyung represent well urbanized and rural areas, respectively. In comparison with Chupungnyung, yearly mean temperature at Daegu Metropolitan increases rapidly and especially the differences of minimum temperature increasing rate during 40 years becomes greater. These differences of regional warming are caused by the different urbanization intensity between two sites. And the impact of anthropogenic heat due to urbanization should be stronger in nighttime than in daytime. Sensible heat advection by regional wind during 6 hours from 18 LST contributes to atmospheric cooling. For this reason wind speed is in proportion to cooling rate of atmosphere. However, wind after 24 LST induces the warm air advection and makes decrease the cooling rate in urban area. Although the cooling rates between Daegu Metropolitan and Chupungnyung are some different, the variation tendencies of cooling rate of two site are almost same. Therefore atmospheric cooling rate in nighttime tends to be associated with the intensity of wind speed.

A coupled model system for Wind Resource Assessment (WRA) was studied. Using a mesoscale meteorological model, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, global-scale data were downscaled to the inner nested grid scale (typically a few kilometers), and then through the coupling Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) mode, FLUENT. High-resolution results (50 m in the horizontal direction; 10 m in the vertical direction below 150 m) of the wind speed distribution data and ultimately refined wind farm information, were obtained. The refined WRF/FLUENT system was then applied to assess the wind resource over complex terrain in the northern Poyang Lake region. The results showed that the approach is viable for the assessment of wind energy.

The concentration of atmospheric mercury(Hg0 and relevent environmental parameters that include both meteorological and criteria pollutant data were dtermined at hourly intervals during two field campaigns covering the periods of September 1997 and May/June 1998. The mean concentrations of Hg for the two study periods were computed as 3.94 and 3.43ngm-3, respectively. Through a separation of these data into both daytime and nighttime periods, we further analyzed diurnal variation patterns for Hg between two different seasons. Using our Hg data sets, we were able to recognize two contrasting diurnal variation patterns of Hg between two diffeerent seasons that can be characterized as: (1) the occurrences of peak Hg concentration during daytime(fall0 and (2) slight reductions in daytime Hg concentration relative to nighttiime Hg data(summer). To study the systematic differences in diurnal patterns between two different seasons, we analyzed Hg data in terms of different statistical approaches such as correlation(and linear regression0 and factor analysis. Results of these analyses consistently indicated that different mechanisms were responsible for controlling the daytime distribution patterns of Hg. The variation of boundary layer conditions betwen day/night periods may have been important in introducing the relative reduction in daytime Hg levels during summer. However, when the relationship between Hg and concurrently determined O3 is concerned, these differences are unlikely to be an effective sink mechanism within the ranges of ozone concentrations determined concurrently during this study, regardless of season. To further provide the general account for short-term variations in Hg distribution data, we should be able to describe the various factors underlying its sink mechanism.

This paper aims to analyze the perception of university students for the extreme heat watch warning and suggest the usefulness of special weather reports. For this, we have made up a descriptive questionnaires including the perception, mass media, usefulness and satisfaction of special weather report. Using the SPSS 17.0 program, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe test were used to analyze the collected data. The result are as follows; The perception of extreme heat watch warning was some low as 59.1 percentile, we think it needs education and public relations about the extreme heat watch warning. The usefulness of special weather report was 66.6 percentile and of girl students of university that was educated about health care was higher than one of boy students of university, it needs continuous education of these students in order to upgrade satisfaction of special report and mitigate the hazard of extreme heat according to climate change. The main media to get the meteorological information of university undergraduate students were TV and Internet, it needed education and development of new contents. From these findings, suggestions are presented to help improve the extreme heat watch warning.

Several numerical experiments were carried out to clarify the influence of satellite data assimilation with various spatial resolution on mesoscale meteorological wind and temperature field. Satellite data used in this study is QuikSCAT launched on ADEOS II. QuikSCAT data is reasonable and faithful sea wind data, which have been verified through many observational studies. And numerical model in the study is MM5 developed by NCAR. Difference of wind pattern with and without satellite data assimilation appeared clearly, especially wind speed dramatically reduced on East Sea, when satellite data assimilation worked. And sea breeze is stronger in numerical experiments with RDAPS and satellite data assimilation than that with CDAS and data assimilation. This caused the lower estimated surface temperature in CDAS used cases. Therefore the influence of satellite data assimilation acts differently according to initial data quality. And it is necessary to make attention careful to handle the initial data for numerical simulations.

The ozone concentration is one of the important environmental issue for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. In this article, two time series ARE models, the direct ARE model and applied ARE model have been considered for analyzing the ozone data at southern part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Pyeongtaek, Osan and Suwon monitoring sites in Korea. The result shows that the direct ARE model is better suited for describing the ozone concentration in all three sites. In both of the ARE models, eight meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the explanatory variables. Also the high level of ozone data (over 80 ppb) have been analyzed at the Pyeongtaek, Osan and Suwon monitoring sites.

Sea/land circulation system is a representative mesoscale local circulation system in coastal area. In this study, wind fields around coastal area. Pohang, which is affected by this system was investigated and its detailed characteristic analysis was carried out. The following can be found out from the numerical simulation. Generally, at nighttime mountain winds prevail and land breeze toward the coastal area was well simulated During daytime, valley wind and sea breeze was simulated in detail. Especially, as a result of analyzing the land breeze path, it could be found along the coastline as it flows out through low land coastal area. In order to investigate the accuracy of model results. wind speed, temperature and wind direction of continuous typical sea/land breeze occurrence day was compared with observation data. Analyzing the characteristics of local circulation system was very hard because of horizontally sparse observation data but from the above result, a numerical simulation using RAMS, which satisfies the spatial high resolution, will provide more accurate results.
