A radiometric correction method is developed to apply multi-temporal KOMPSAT-1 EOC satellite images for the detection of land-cover changes b\ulcorner recognizing changes in reflection pattern. Radiometric correction was carried out to eliminate the atmospheric effects that could interfere with the image properly of the satellite data acquired at different multi-times. Four invariant features of water, sand, paved road, and roofs of building are selected and a linear regression relationship among the control set images is used as a correction scheme. It is found that the utilization of panchromatic multi-temporal imagery requires the radiometric scene standardization process to correct radiometric errors that include atmospheric effects and digital image processing errors. Land-cover with specific change pattern such as paddy field is extracted by seasonal change recognition process.
The goal of this study is to retrieve ASTER thermal radiometry using a radiative transfer model. The MODTRAN is used for the model because it is easy to use with high spatial resolution and it is possible to specify input parameters such as profiles of temperature, water vapor density, ozone, aerosols and any of the other gasses. Most of parameters such as temperature and water vapor profiles were obtained from the Terra MODIS. The selected ASTER scene images land and coastal area. The surface radiance of ASTER TIR bands were retrieved by MODTRAN and extracted atmospheric profiles from MOD07 and US standard 76 models. Radiance estimated using MOD07 data was systematically lower by about 0.5-1.0 $W/m^2$ sr ${\mu}m$ than that by US standard 76 model between the two cases.
The 2nd Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI-II) is the successor to the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), which employs one near-ultraviolet wavelength (380 nm) and eight visible wavelengths(412, 443, 490, 510, 555, 620, 660, 680 nm) and three near-infrared wavelengths(709, 745, 865 nm) to observe the marine environment in Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula. However, the multispectral radiance image observed at satellite altitude includes both the water-leaving radiance and the atmospheric path radiance. Therefore, the atmospheric correction process to estimate the water-leaving radiance without the path radiance is essential for analyzing the ocean environment. This manuscript describes the GOCI-II standard atmospheric correction algorithm and its initial phase validation. The GOCI-II atmospheric correction method is theoretically based on the previous GOCI atmospheric correction, then partially improved for turbid water with the GOCI-II's two additional bands, i.e., 620 and 709 nm. The match-up showed an acceptable result, with the mean absolute percentage errors are fall within 5% in blue bands. It is supposed that part of the deviation over case-II waters arose from a lack of near-infrared vicarious calibration. We expect the GOCI-II atmospheric correction algorithm to be improved and updated regularly to the GOCI-II data processing system through continuous calibration and validation activities.
The early Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS) atmospheric correction algorithm which is the basis of the atmospheric correction algorithm for Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI) assumes that water-leaving radiances is negligible at near-infrared(NIR) wavelengths. For this reason, all of the satellite measured radiances at the NIR wavelengths are assigned to aerosol radiances. However that assumption would cause underestimation of water-leaving radiances if it were applied to turbid Case-2 waters. To overcome this problem, Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models(MUMM) atmospheric correction algorithm has been developed for turbid waters. This MUMM algorithm introduces new parameter ${\alpha}$, representing the ratio of water-leaving reflectance at the NIR wavelengths. ${\alpha}$ is calculated by statistical method and is assumed to be constant throughout the study area. Using this algorithm, we can obtain comparatively accurate water-leaving radiances in the moderately turbid waters where the NIR water-leaving reflectance is less than approximately 0.01. However, this algorithm still underestimates the water-leaving radiances at the extremely turbid water since the ratio of water-leaving radiance at two NIR wavelengths, ${\alpha}$ is changed with concentration of suspended particles. In this study, we modified the MUMM algorithm to calculate appropriate value for ${\alpha}$ using an iterative technique. As a result, the accuracy of water-leaving reflectance has been significantly improved. Specifically, the results show that the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) of the modified MUMM algorithm was 0.002 while that of the MUMM algorithm was 0.0048.
Temperature was considered to estimate the minimum detectable absorption coefficient of aerosol particles from photothermal spectroscopy. Light energy absorbed by subsequent emission from the aerosol results in the heating of the aerosol sample and consequently causes a temperature change as well as changes in thermodynamic parameters of the sample. This thermal effect is the basis of photothermal spectroscopy. Photothermal spectroscopy has several types of techniques depending on how the photothermal effects are detected. Photothermal interferometry traces the photothermal effect, refractive index, using an interferometer. Photoacoustic spectroscopy detects the photothermal effect, sound wave, using a microphone. In this study, it is suggested that the detection limit for photothermal spectroscopy can be influenced by the introduction of a slip correction factor when the light absorption is determined in a high temperature environment. The minimum detectable absorption coefficient depends on the density, the specific heat and the temperature, which are thermodynamic properties. Without considering the slip correction, when the temperature of the environment is 400 K, the minimum detectable absorption coefficient for photothermal interferometry increases approximately 0.3% compared to the case of 300 K. The minimum detectable absorption coefficient for photoacoustic spectroscopy decreases only 0.2% compared to the case of 300 K. Photothermal interferometry differs only 0.5% point from photoacoustic spectroscopy. Thus, it is believed that photothermal interferometry is reliably comparable to photoacoustic spectroscopy under 400 K.
One-layer solar radiation(GWNU; Gangneung-Wonju National University) model is developed in order to resolve the lack of vertical observations and fast calculation with high resolution. GWNU model is based on IQBAL(Iqbal, 1983) and NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory) methods and corrected by precise multi-layer LBL(Line-by-line) model. Input data were used 42 atmospheric profiles from Garand et al.(2001) for calculation of global radiation by the Multi-layer and one-layer solar radiation models. GWNU model has error of about -0.10% compared with LBL model while IQBAL and NREL models have errors of about -3.92 and -2.57%, respectively. Global solar radiation was calculated by corrected GWNU solar model with satellites(MODIS, OMI and MTSAT-1R), RDPS model prediction data in Korea peninsula in 2009, and the results were compared to surface solar radiation observed by 22 KMA solar sites. All models have correlation($R^2$) of 0.91 with the observed hourly solar radiation, and root mean square errors of IQBAL, NREL and GWNU models are 69.16, 69.74 and $67.53W/m^2$, respectively.

The ocean signal that reaches the detector of an imaging system after multiple interactions with the atmospheric molecules and aerosols was retrieved from the total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). A simple method referred to as 'Path Extraction' applied to the Landsat-TM ocean imagery of turbid coastal water was compared with the conventional dark-pixel subtraction technique. The shape of the path-extracted water-leaving radiance spectrum resembled the radiance spectrum measured in-situ. The path-extraction was also extended to the SeaWiFS ocean color imagery and compared with the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which relays on the assumption of zero water leaving radiance at the two NIR wavebands (765 and 865nm). The path-extracted water-leaving radiance was good agreement with the measured radiance spectrum. In contrast, the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm led to essential underestimation of the water-leaving radiance in the blue-green part of the spectrum. The reason is that the assumption of zero water-leaving radiance at 755 and 865nm fails due to backscattering by suspended mineral particles. Therefore, the near infrared channels 765 and 865nm used fur deriving the aerosol information are no longer valid for turbid coastal waters. The path-extraction is identified as a simple and efficient method of extracting the path radiance largely introduced due to light interaction through the complex atmosphere carried several aerosol and gaseous components and at the air-sea interface.interface.
The purpose of this study is to examine the image-based atmospheric correction models using the data from Landsat Enhanced Thermal Mapper Plus (ETM+) that have quite similar spectral characteristics to the forthcoming KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT)-2 Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC), and the in-situ measured surface reflectance data during satellite overflight. The main advantage of this type of correction is that it does not require in-situ measurements during each satellite overflight. While substantial differences are present between Top-Of-the Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and in-situmeasurements, the results showed that Case 1 based on COST model gives most accurate results among three cases. The accuracy of Case 2_1 is very close to Case 1 and its values are smaller than in-situ data. No notable features appear between some bands in the Case 3_1 and in-situ data. It is expected from this study that if the current methods are applied to the IKONOS high resolution data, we will be able to develop the suitable atmospheric correction methods for MSC data.

Radar beam blocking which is partially or entirely interrupted by obstacles like a mountain causes underestimation of the rainfall. In this paper, partially blocked radar reflectivity is retrieved using the ARM(Accumulated Reflectivity Map). ARM is made by accumulation of the radar reflectivity and very useful product to analyze the beam blockage. The blockage correcting map could be obtained by assuming the spatially uniform reflectivity field in the ARM. This method is applied to the cases of typhoon and Changma, and we obtain the MFE(Mean Fractional Error) from two radar data, the one is objective radar data which is affected by blockage and the other is comparative radar data which is not affected by blockage. Before blocking correction, MFE is 20-35%. However, after correction, MFE decreases to 7-10%.

The air pollutants from vehicle exhaust gas are affected by many factors including fuel qualities, engine and vehicle technologies, driving patterns. In particular, fuel qualities and after-treatment devices could directly affect the emission level of pollutants. The pollutant reduction characteristics that caused by enforced fuel quality standard were analyzed. Three types of test fuel were selected in accordance with Korean automotive fuel standard in 2006, 2009, 2012 and used for vehicle emission test in chassis dynamometer. European COPERT correction equation of fuel impact was considered as reference information to quantify the vehicle emission test results. The contribution rates of exhaust emission by COPERT correction equation showed that aromatic compounds and oxygen contents in gasoline fuel was most important. In case of diesel fuel, cetane index and polycyclic aromatic compounds accounted for the greater part. The exhaust emission effects by COPERT correction equation revealed that CO and VOC was increased 0.86%, 1.57% respectively in after 2009 gasoline when compared to before 2009 gasoline fuel. In case of light-duty diesel vehicle CO, VOC and PM were decreased in range of 3~7%. The result from this study could be provided for developing future fuel standards and be used to fundamental information for Korean clean air act.
