The microstructure changes of the matrix and the graphites were observed by optical microscope and the average hardness number was investigated according to the heat-treatment conditions of the cast iron rods by the horizontal continuous casting process in 35 mm diameter. The three kinds of heat-treatments were introduced. The first treatment was performed at 900, 950, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and the second treatment was conducted during 5, 10, and 15 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$ respectively. The third treatments were the two-cyclic heat-treatment and the three-cyclic heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ during 2 hours. The matrix microstructure of the specimens to be treated at various temperatures for 2 hours was the ferrite to be transformed from the pearlite The hardness number of the center of the samples according to the heat treatment time at $1000^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of the surface area because of the martensite formation in the center. Also, in the cyclic heat-treatments, the hardness number of the two-cycle treatment specimens increased because of the martensite formation in the center.

Seed priming leading to improved emergences, germination speed and uniformity under unfavorable conditions without loss of longevity are the best level of techniques. We studied the possibility to obtain primed seed with reduced mean germination time (MGT) and uniformity but with simple, fast and effective methods. The experiments were carried out at $15^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours with priming treatment. To compare the effects of each treatment, we used 200mM $CaCl_2$ priming or hydro priming or no imbibition after ultrasonication or red light treatment. The light treatment was performed by irradiating 2000 lux of red light for 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes. Addition, in order to investigate the effect of the priming solution, treated at 200mM $CaCl_2$ for 8 hours. Ultrasonication treatment was performed for 5, 10, and 20 minutes at exposures of 13.0, 17.3, and 21.6 kHz during priming. For liquid smoke (LS) treatment, seed soaked in 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 5.0% and 10.0% of diluted water and 200mM $CaCl_2$ solution. After each treatment, the seeds were dried to moisture content ranged 5-8% at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The effect of seed treatment was evaluated with germination percentage (GP), MGT, germination index(GI), germination rate(GR), Germination Uniformity(GU) and heath seed percentage(HS). For several factors tested, we found that the desired germination improvement could be obtained by treating the seed with ultrasonication at 17.3 kHz for 5 minutes in water or red light exposure at 2000 lux for 120 min in water that resulted very similar to those used to 200mM $CaCl_2$ priming for 16 hrs. However, LS treatment showed no improvement in all diluted solution. Therefore, the methods applied ultrasonication and red light treatment showed high potential for fast and easy treatment avoiding pollution of salt solution waste.

Control of surface runoff from upland soil is essential to reduce nonpoint source pollution. The use of non-woven fabric as a soil cover can be helpful to control surface runoff. The field experiment was conducted to evaluate the furrow cover effects of black non-woven fabric on the nutrient discharge from upland soil used for red pepper cultivation. The experimental plots consisted of chemical fertilizer (CF), cow manure compost (CMC), and pig manure compost (PMC) treatment. Each nutrient material treatment plot has control (no furrow cover (NFC)) and black non-woven fabric cover treatment, respectively. The amount of nutrient application was chemical fertilizer of $190-112-149(N-P_2O_5-K_2O)kgha^{-1}$, cow manure compost of $29.5tonha^{-1}$, and pig manure compost of $7.9tonha^{-1}$ as recommended amount after soil test for red pepper cultivation. Compared to control (NFC), furrow cover treatment with black non-woven fabric reduced the amount of T-N discharge by 50% at CF treatment, 36.9% at CMC treatment, and 44.8% at PMC treatment. Furrow cover treatment with black non-woven fabric reduced the amount of T-P discharge by 37.1% at CF treatment, 49.9% at CMC treatment, and 63.4% at PMC treatment compared to control (NFC). The production of red pepper did not show significant difference. There was no weed occurring in furrow cover treatment plots with black non-woven fabric. Results from this study showed that the furrow cover with black non-woven fabric could play a significant role in reduce nutrient discharge from upland soil used for red pepper cultivation.

The objective of this study was to examine the impact of pruning (P treatment) and transplanting (T treatment) of Acer palmatum on cambial growth and compartmentalization of pruning wounds for one year after treatments. Changes of cambial electrical resistance (CER), sizes of pruning wounds, cambial growth of trunks and stems near the wounds, and total phenols at branch unions during the period were examined using a total of 49 trees. After harvesting, areas of discolored wood behind the wounds, relative proportions of extractives, holocellulose and lignin at branch unions were also determined. CER and the cambial growth of trunk at 30 cm above the ground (TGR) were inversely correlated, and differences of CER and TGR among three treatments were significant. TGRs of control, P treatment and P+T treatment after the treatments were 112.2%, 72.4% and 52.5% of the annual growth for the year before the treatments, respectively. The cambial growth rate of stem (SGR) at 1.5 cm above the branch bark ridge and the closure rate of pruning wound (WCR) for one year after treatments were positively correlated, and WCR of P treatment of 39.8% was significantly higher than that of P+T treatment of 31.8%. Wounds of P+T treatment formed greater discolored area per unit area of pruning wound (D/W Ratio) than those of P treatment significantly. Lower WCR and higher D/W Ratio of P+T treatment suggested less ability of compartmentalizing the wounds than P treatment. Total phenols at branch core of pruning wound for both treatments heightened a month after treatment, and then lowered. The contents at below core of the wound were higher than those at control ones continuously, while they became similar each other at above core. Relatively high phenol contents of the extractives at P+T treatment implied that trees with P+T treatment allocated more energy to compartmentalize their wounds. Holocellulose and lignin contents at the branch core of treated branch unions of both treatments were lower and higher, respectively, than at the same part of the union with living branch, as results of the tree reaction to protection from wounding and microbial invasion.
Response of two ploidy levels to cool temperature and short day treatment were investigated under controlled conditione of Phytotron. The haploid and diploid of seven genotypes were started and grown to the 8- leaf stage in the greenhouse. They were treated during 15 and 20 days to 8- hour photoperiods at 18$^{\circ}C$ in controlled - environmental room to induce premature flowering, respectively. Diploid plants of seven genotypes flower later than their haploid plants at 20 days treatment. But under 15 days treatment, diploid plants of NC82, Hicks, BY4, NC2326 and Coker86 were not different from their haploid plants for days to flower. Diploid plants of seven genotypes developed the same number of leaves as their haploid plants at 20 days treatment. Under 15 days treatment, diploid plants of Coker347 and NC95 developed more leaves per plant than their haploid plants. Correlation coefficient between the ranks of leaves per plant of seven genotypes at two ploidy levels was 0.964 and 0.929 at 15 and 20 days treatment, respectively.
This study aimed to convert underutilized moso bamboo into high-value added products such as fences, interior materials, lighting fixtures, and accessories. Green moso bamboo poles with a diameter of approximately 10 cm and a length of approximately 3.7 m were heat treated at 140℃ using a large-scale kiln. The processing time was meticulously adjusted through various stages, including pretreatment (6-8 hours at 60℃), cooking (8-10 hours at 100℃), steaming (26-30 hours at 120℃), heating (4-6 hours at 140℃), and finally, cooling (below 80℃). A meticulously designed heat treatment process has enabled efficient mass production of moso bamboo poles with improved qualities, including minimal splitting, moisture levels below 3%, and a specific gravity of 1.05. The focus of this study was to present the physical and drying properties, such as color, dimensional change, specific gravity, moisture content, and splitting, observed during the heat treatment process.
In order to know the influences of heat treatment of yoghurt on pH, $\beta$-galactosidase and viable cells, yoghurt sample was made by general method with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, and the changes in pH, $\beta$-galactosidase-activity and viable cell-count were determined during heating at 55$^{\circ}C$ and 7$0^{\circ}C$. The pH of yoghurt was not changed when the yoghurt was heated at 7$0^{\circ}C$, but at 55$^{\circ}C$ it decreased slightly. The stability of $\beta$-galactosidase was not affected markedly by heat treatment at 55$^{\circ}C$, but was rapidly inactivated at 7$0^{\circ}C$. The heat treatment of yoghurt at 55$^{\circ}C$ had the halb of viable cell in 1 hour, but the heat treatment at 7$0^{\circ}C$ had considerable effect on viable cell in 5 minutes.
The effects of severe plastic deformation by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and subsequent heat treatment on the low cycle fatigue behaviors of Al-Mg-Si alloy were investigated. The specimens which were peak aged at $175^{\circ}C$ after solution treatment showed cyclic hardening at all strain amplitudes, while the specimens ECAPed after solution treatment showed cyclic softening at all strain amplitudes during fatigue. The specimens aged at $100^{\circ}C$ after ECAP showed slight cyclic hardening. Various changes of cyclic fatigue behavior after severe plastic deformation and/or heat treatment were discussed in terms of the microstructural changes and precipitation conditions.
