Objectives: Medical students represent a primary target for tobacco cessation training. This study assessed the prevalence of medical students' tobacco use, attitudes, clinical skills, and tobacco-related curricula in two countries, the US and Italy, with known baseline disparities in hopes of identifying potential corrective interventions. Methods: From September to December 2013, medical students enrolled at the University of Bologna and at Brown University were recruited via email to answer survey questions assessing the prevalence of medical students' tobacco use, attitudes and clinical skills related to patients' smoking, and elements of medical school curricula related to tobacco use. Results: Of the 449 medical students enrolled at Brown and the 1426 enrolled at Bologna, 174 Brown students (38.7%) and 527 Bologna students (36.9%) participated in this study. Italian students were more likely to smoke (29.5% vs. 6.1%; p<0.001) and less likely to receive smoking cessation training (9.4% vs. 80.3%; p<0.001) than their American counterparts, even though the majority of students in both countries desired smoking cessation training (98.6% at Brown, 85.4% at Bologna; p<0.001). Additionally, negative beliefs regarding tobacco usage, the absence of formal training in smoking cessation counseling, and a negative interest in receiving specific training on smoking cessation were associated with a higher risk of not investigating a patient's smoking status during a routine history and not offering tobacco cessation treatment to patients. Conclusions: Medical curricula on tobacco-related health hazards and on smoking cessation should be mandatory in order to reduce smoking among medical students, physicians, and patients, thereby improving tobacco-related global health.
Purpose: This study was conducted to explore sexual attitude, sexual behavior and the related factors in chinese-Korean university students. Method: A self-administered questionnaire with cross-sectional design was used. Participants were 271 Chinese undergraduate students in one university in Jilin, China. Correlation coefficiency and t-test were used to find the relationships and to compare sexual attitude and sexual behavior and related factors. Result: Although sexual attitude of participants was moderate, they were more likely to be engaged in sexual behavior. The strong relationship between sexual attitude and sexual behavior suggested that those who have a permissive sexual attitude were more likely to have engaged in sexual behavior. The participants who responded that their parents have a less permissive attitude about sexual activity were less likely to be engaged in sexual behavior. There were significant relationships between sexual behavior and other variables, such as dating, experience of sexual activity, smoking and grades. Conclusion: Students who have a higher score of sexual attitude and had an experience of sexual activity were more likely to be at higher risk of being sexually.

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate mandibular third molars as risk factors for angle fracture in a patient sample with fractured mandible. Materials and methods. The medical records and panoramic radiographs of 107 patients with mandibular fractures were examined. The presence and absence and degree of impaction of the lower third molar were assessed for each patient and related to the occurrence of fracture of the mandibular angle. Data were also collected for age, sex and mechanism of injury. Data were analyzed by a chisquare statistics and Student t test. Result. The incidence of mandibular angle fracture was found to be significantly greater when a lower third molar was present(p <0.05) especially at class III state.(p < 0.05)(by Pell & Gregory system) Of the 78 patients with a lower third molar, 46(58.97%) had angle fractures. Of the 29 without a lower third molar, 24(82.76%) had not angle fractures. Conclusion. The result of this study showed that the mandibular angle that have a lower third molar is more susceptible to fracture when exposed to an impact than an angle without an lower third molar.
Purpose: This study was done to explore the relationship between aggression and internet over-use, depression-anxiety, self-esteem, all of which are known to be behavior and psychological characteristics linked to "at-risk" children for aggression. Methods: Korean-Child Behavior Check List (K-CBCL), Korean-Internet Addiction Self-Test Scale, and Self-Esteem Scale by Rosenberg (1965) were used as measurement tools with a sample of 743, 5th-6th grade students from 3 elementary schools in Jecheon city. Chi-square, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/Win 13.0 version were used to analyze the collected data. Results: Aggression for the elementary school students was positively correlated with internet over-use and depression-anxiety, whereas self-esteem was negatively correlated with aggression. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 68.4% of the variance for aggression was significantly accounted for by internet over-use, depression-anxiety, and self-esteem. The most significant factor influencing aggression was depression-anxiety. Conclusion: These results suggest that earlier screening and intervention programs for depression-anxiety and internet over-use for elementary student will be helpful in preventing aggression.
Osteoporosis is a age-related metabolic disorder. Currently there is no cure, but there are measures that can prevent or deter the development of osteoporosis. Futhermore lifestyle among risk factors of osteoporosis may be modifiable. Osteoporotic preventive health promotion behavior may be more effective at early adult when make formation of peak bone mass. The purpose of this study was to identify of relation between the demographic variable, osteoporosis-related lifestyles and the health promotion behavior of University and College Female Students. The results were followed: 1. Demographic variables according to the health promotion behavior were significantly difference with age, body height, religion and income. 2. Osteoporosis-related lifestyles according to the health promotion behavior were significantly difference with element school milk intake, current milk intake, exercise and caffeine intake. 3. Health promotion behavior was positively correlation with age, body weight, height income, element school and current milk intake and exercise.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in reported discharge learning needs between nurses and liver transplantation (LT) patients. Methods: The participants of this study were 40 patients discharged after LT at P University Hospital in Y City and 42 nurses in intensive care units and the ward. The data were collected for two months from December 1, 2012, to January 31, 2013, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student's t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Patients earning a low income (p=.041), having no experience of hospitalization after LT (p=.023), and receiving information about LT from nurses (p=.003) indicated higher discharge learning needs. Among the items evaluated regarding discharge learning needs, "rejection symptoms or signs" were regarded to be more important by nurses than LT patients (p=.038). However, "management of other diseases after LT" (p=.003), "risk of recurrence" (p=.001), "food choices" (p<.001), "obesity prevention" (p=.020), "amount of exercise" (p=.007), and "ways to receive financial help"(p=.033), were thought to be more important by LT patients than nurses. Conclusion: There exist differences between LT patients and nurses with respect to their perceptions of LT discharge learning needs. Therefore, an individualized education program reflecting patients' conditions and learning needs rather than providing information uniformly needs to be developed.
Objective There is concern regarding the safety of delayed cord clamping (DCC) in babies born at less than 34 weeks' gestation. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to compare the rates of hyperbilirubinemia and polycythemia during initial 7 days in infants born at less than 34 weeks' gestation and randomized to receive DCC by 120 seconds or early cord clamping (ECC) within less than 30 seconds. Methods One hundred pregnant women were randomly subjected to DCC or ECC at the time of birth in a tertiary referral hospital setting. Blood samples were obtained from each newborn at 48 hours and 7 days for hematocrit measurement. Serum bilirubin levels were estimated once the infant had clinically significant jaundice or at 72 hours. For the statistical analysis, the ${\chi}^2$ test, Student's t-test, or Wilcoxon rank sum test was used. Results The hematocrit was significantly higher in the DCC group than in the ECC group (P<0.001). None of the babies had polycythemia. Mean total serum bilirubin level was 6.6 mg/dL in the DCC group and 8.7 mg/dL in the ECC group (P<0.001). There was no increased risk of hyperbilirubinemia in the DCC group. Conclusion DCC benefits preterm neonates with no significant adverse effects.
Purpose: During the recent decades, the age at menarche continued to decline in Korea and worldwide. Prior studies have suggested that early menarche may increase the risk of various social, psychological, and physical health problems in young adolescent girls, but little is known about the determinants associated with early menarche. The purpose of this study is to evaluate independent determinants of early menarche among 5th~6th female graders in South Korea. Methods: Our analysis was conducted in 95 menarcheal girls and 95 age-matched pre-menarcheal girls residing in Daegu, South Korea. Demographic and lifestyle characteristics were collected using survey questionnaires for children and parents. Dietary information was assessed by 2 day~24 hour food records and survey questionnaires, which were completed by both children and their parents. Anthropometric data were obtained from the student health check-ups at the school. Results: A multiple logistic regression analysis using a conditional likelihood method was performed for simultaneous evaluation of several risk factors. There were significant differences in that higher proportion of obesity (OR, odds ratio = 5.60, 95% CI, confidence interval = 1.34~23.42), shorter sleep duration (OR = 0.45, 95% CI = 0.23~0.87), and younger mother's age at menarche (OR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.44~0.93) were observed in the menarcheal group compared to the pre-menarcheal group. Conclusion: These findings indicate a possible association of sleep duration, mother's menarcheal age, and obesity with age at menarche. A well-planned, prospective cohort study is warranted to examine causal relationship.
The purpose of this study was to explore the factors related to internet addiction in college student of Korea. Methods: From November 19, 2012 until December 14, 2012, 300 college students from one of the universities located at K city were surveyed. This study is a cross-sectional survey of college students in K city, and data was collected through self-report questionnaires. Data was analyzed by Fisher's exact test, independent t-test to identify different according to addiction group, and logistic regression analysis in order to factors related to on health behavior, sexual behavior and mental health of among college students. According to results, factors related to risk of addiction were lower frequency of exercise (p<0.05), no eat breakfast for 2 day (p<0.05), porno magazine/porno video contact pornography (p<0.05), subjective happiness index (p<0.05), and suicidal Ideation (p<0.05). This study suggest that exercise, regular diet, important of reproductive health, subjective happiness index and Suicidal Ideation are associated with internet addiction in College student. It is necessary to develop some preventive programs for those of internet addiction.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Studies have indicated that university students majoring in nutrition and dietetics or sport sciences may have more obsessions associated with eating attitudes and body shape perception compared to other disciplines i.e. social sciences. Therefore, this study aimed to assess and compare the risk of eating disorders and body shape perception. MATERIALS/METHODS: Data was collected from 773 undergraduate students at the Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics (NDD) (n = 254), Physical Education and Sports (PESD) (n = 263), and Social Sciences (SOC) (n = 256).A socio-demographic and personal information questionnaire, Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-34), Perceived Figure Rating Scale (FRS) were applied; and body weights and heights were measured. RESULTS: Mean EAT-40 scores showed that, both male and female students of PESD had the highest scores ($7.4{\pm}11.6$) compared with NDD ($14.3{\pm}8.3$) and SOC ($13.0{\pm}6.2$) (P < 0.05). According to EAT-40 classification, high risk in abnormal eating behavior was more in PESD (10.7%) compared to NDD (2.9%) and SOC (0.4%) students (P < 0.05). Students of PESD, who skipped meal, had higher tendency to the risk of eating disorders (P < 0.05). In parallel, body shape perception was found to be marked with higher scores in NDD ($72.0{\pm}28.7$) and PESD ($71.5{\pm}32.8$) compared with SOC ($64.2{\pm}27.5$) students (P < 0.05). Considering BSQ-34 classification, high concern (moderate and marked) for body shape were more in PESD (7.4 %) compared to NDD (5.2%) and SOC (1.9%) students (P < 0.05). The body size judgement via obtained by the FRS scale were generally correlated with BMI. The Body Mass Index levels were in normal range (Mean BMI: $21.9{\pm}2.8kg/m^2$) and generally consistent with FRS data. CONCLUSIONS: Tendency to the abnormal eating behavior and substantial body shape perception were higher in PESD students who have more concern on body shape and were not well-educated about nutrition. In conclusion, substantial concern on physical appearance might affect eating behavior disorders in PESD students.
