Laminar flows over a cube and a cuboid (cube extended in the streamwise direction) are numerically investigated for the Reynolds numbers between 50 and 350. First, vortical structures behind a cube and lift characteristics are scrutinized in order to understand the variation in vortex shedding characteristics with respect to the Reynolds number. As the Reynolds number increases, the flow over a cube experiences the steady planar-symmetric, unsteady planar-symmetric, and unsteady asymmetric flows. Similar to the sphere wake, the planar-symmetric flow over a cube can be divided into two different regimes: single-frequency regime and multiple-frequency regime. The former has a single frequency due to regular shedding of vortices with the same strength in time, while the latter has multiple frequency components due to temporal variation in the strength of shed vortices. Second, the effect of the length-to-height ratio of the cuboid on the flow characteristics is investigated for the Reynolds number of 270, at which planar-symmetric vortex shedding takes place behind a cube. With the ratio smaller than one, the flow over the cuboid becomes unsteady asymmetric flow, whereas it becomes steady flow for the ratios greater than one. With increasing the ratio, the drag coefficient first decreases and then increases. This feature is related to the flow reattachment on the side faces of the cuboid.
The fluid-structure interaction of a towed body is simulated using a developed code, which is based on the flux-difference splitting scheme on the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. To improve the stability in the coupling between the fluid and structure domains, a scheme is used, in which the effects of structure deformation are treated implicitly. The developed code is validated for the fluid-structure interaction problem through comparisons with other results on the vortex-induced vibration of elastically mounted cylinders. To simulate behavior of a towed body, an asymmetric tension modelling for a towing cable is suggested. In the suggested model, the tension is proportional to the elongation of the cable, but the cable has no effect on the body motion whenever the distance between the endpoints of the cable is smaller than the original length of the cable. The fluid-structure interactions of a towed body are simulated on the basis of different parameters of the towing cables. It is observed that the suggested tension model predicts the snapping for a shorter towing cable, which is in accordance with the reported results.
We propose a ring resonator-based orbital angular momentum carrying vortex beam generator design with high vertical directional emission efficiency. By adopting a vertically asymmetric grating structure in the ring resonator, optimized for enhanced vertical emission, an emission efficiency in one direction reaches as high as 78%, exceeding the 50% theoretical limit of previously designed vertically symmetric grating-assisted ring resonator-based structures.

Velocity field behind a container ship model with a rotating propeller has been investigated using PIV (particle image velocimetry) system. Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured at 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed due to the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between bilge vortex developed along the hull surface and the tangential velocity component of incoming flow causes to have asymmetric flow structure in the transverse plane.

In order to simulate storm surge for the west coast, complex physics of asymmetrical typhoon wind vortex, tide and wave are simultaneously incorporated on a fine finite element mesh extended to the North Western Pacific sea. Asymmetrical vortex based on maximum wind radii for each quadrant by JTWC's best tracks are input in pADCIRC and wave stress is accounted by dynamic coupling with unSWAN. Computations performed on parallel clusters. In hindcasting simulation of typhoon Kompasu(1007), model results of wave characteristic are very close with the observed data at Ieo island, and sea surface records at major tidal stations are reproduced with satisfaction when typhoon is approaching to the coast. It is obvious that increasing of local storm surges can be found by introducing asymmetrical vortex. Thus this approach can be satisfactorily applied in coastal hazard management against to storm surge inundation on low level area and major harbor facilities.

An axisymmetric jet is forced with two helical fundamental waves of identical frequency spinning in opposite directions and an additional axisymmetric sub harmonic wave. The subharmonic component rapidly grows downstream from subharmonic resonance with the fundamental, significantly depending on the initial phase difference. The variations of the subharmonic amplitude with the initial phase difference show cusp-like shapes. The amplification of the sub harmonic results in 'vortex pairing of helical modes'. Furthermore, azimuthal variation of the amplification induces an asymmetric jet cross-section. When the initial subharmonics is imposed with an initial phase difference close to a critical value, the jet-cross section evolves into a three-lobed shape. One lobe is generated by the enhanced vortex pairing and the other two lobes are generated by the delayed vortex pairing. Thus, it is confirmed that the initial phase difference between the fundamental and the subharmonic plays an important role in controlling the jet cross-section.
In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are not show to compare well with the experimental results for the case of the Rossby number 3. Because the numerical results calculate on the assumption that vortex flows are axi-symmetric flow on the other hand real experimental results are show asymmetric flow. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

The evolutionary structure of a tip vortex in the initial period have been investigated by the two-dimensional LDV system. Circumferential and axial components of mean velocities, their turbulences and Reynolds stresses were measured by the phase averaging technique at seven different wake ages within one revolution of the rotor. Core growth was also analyzed. It was resulted that circumferential velocity components showed a Rankine combined vortex shape and their circulation profiles viewed in the radial direction were close to the n = 2 model of Vatistas' algebraic formula, while axial velocity components seemed to have the Gaussian profiles In these measured ranges with the base width of three times of core radii. Peaks of circumferential velocities and core radii showed distinct asymmetric behaviors before the wake age of $150^{\circ}$ over inboard and outboard sides of the slipstream, but they became symmetric afterwards. Turbulence profiles which had two peaks Inside the core radii in the earlier wake age were also changed to single peaks after $150^{\circ}$. These trends imply that the tip vortex was barely mature at this wake age.
Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the characteristics of flow past a sphere in uniform shear. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=300, 425 and 480 based on the inlet center velocity and sphere diameter. The non-dimensional shear rate K of the inlet uniform shear is varied from 0 to 0.15. At Re=300, the head of the hairpin vortex loop always locates on the high-velocity side in uniform shear, and the flow maintains the planar symmetry. At Re=425 and 480, the irregularity in the location and strength of the hairpin vortex appearing in uniform inlet flow is much reduced in uniform shear, but the flows still keep the asymmetry for most inlet shear rates. However, in the cases of K=0.075 and 0.1 at Re=425, the flows become planar symmetric and their characteristics of the evolution of the hairpin vortex loops are different from those of asymmetric flows. A hysteresis phenomenon switching from the planar symmetry to the asymmetry (or vice versa) depending on the initial condition is also observed at Re=425.
