  • A simple bimodal model has been developed to analyze charged particle coagulation by modifying previously suggested bimdal model for evolution of particle generation and growth. In the present model, two monodisperse modes are used and 40 charge nodes are assigned to each mode to account both change of the particle size and charge distribution. In addition, we also implemented the effect of electrostatic dispersion loss in the present model. Based on the developed model, we analyzed coagulation of asymmetric bipolar charged particles by computing evolutions of particle number concentration, geometric mean diameter of particles, charge asymmetric ratio and geometric standard deviation of particle size distribution for various initial charge asymmetric ratios. The number concentration of asymmetric bipolar charged particles decreases faster than that of neutral particles but that does not give faster growth of particles since the electrostatic dispersion loss overwhelms particle growth by coagulation.

  • This paper proposes the application of active multiple tuned mass dampers (AMTMD) for translational and torsional response control of a simplified two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) structure, able to represent the dynamic characteristics of general asymmetric structures, under the ground acceleration. This 2DOF structure is a generalized 2DOF system of an asymmetric structure with predominant translational and torsional responses under earthquake excitations using the mode reduced-order method. Depending on the ratio of the torsional to the translational eigenfrequency, i.e. the torsional to translational frequency ratio (TTFR), of asymmetric structures, the following three cases can be distinguished: (1) torsionally flexible structures (TTFR < 1.0), (2) torsionally intermediate stiff structures (TTFR = 1.0), and (3) torsionally stiff structures (TTFR > 1.0). The even distribution of the AMTMD within the whole width and half width of the asymmetric structure, thus leading to three cases of installing the AMTMD (referred to as the AMTMD of case 1, AMTMD of case 2, AMTMD of case 3, respectively), is taken into account. In the present study, the criterion for searching the optimum parameters of the AMTMD is defined as the minimization of the minimum values of the maximum translational and torsional displacement dynamic magnification factors (DMF) of an asymmetric structure with the AMTMD. The criterion used for assessing the effectiveness of the AMTMD is selected as the ratio of the minimization of the minimum values of the maximum translational and torsional displacement DMF of the asymmetric structure with the AMTMD to the maximum translational and torsional displacement DMF of the asymmetric structure without the AMTMD. By resorting to these two criteria, a careful examination of the effects of the normalized eccentricity ratio (NER) on the effectiveness and robustness of the AMTMD are carried out in the mitigation of both the translational and torsional responses of the asymmetric structure. Likewise, the effectiveness of a single ATMD with the optimum positions is presented and compared with that of the AMTMD.

  • Characteristics of bubbling behavior and bubble properties were investigated in a gas-liquid countercurrent bubble column of in diameter 0.152 m and 3.5 m in height, respectively. Effects of gas and liquid velocities and bubble distribution mode(even, wall-side, central or asymmetric distribution) on the bubble properties such as chord length, frequency, rising velocity and holdup in the reactor were measured and examined by means of dual resistivity probe method. The bubble size, frequency and holdup increased with increasing gas($U_G$) or liquid velocity($U_L$). The rising velocity of bubbles increased with increasing $U_G$, whereas decreased with increasing $U_L$. The uniformity of bubble size distribution and bubble holdup decreased when the distribution mode of bubbles at the gas distributor was changed from even to wall-side, central or asymmetric. The central distribution of bubbles was better than asymmetric mode but worse than wall-side distribution, in considering the bubble holdup and uniformity of distribution.

  • A hybrid superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with fast switch had been previously suggested by our research group. To make a hybrid SFCL, different superconducting wires were wound two pancake coils so that two pancake coils had asymmetric configuration. The impedance of the asymmetric non-inductive coils are zero with applied normal current. However during the fault. currents were distributed unequally into the two pancake coils because each superconducting wires have different electrical characteristics. This unequal distribution of current causes effective magnetic flux which generate repulsive force. Fast switch was thus opened by the force applied to the aluminum plate which consists of SFCL. In this paper, the AC loss characteristics of the asymmetric non-inductive coils with combinations of superconducting wires were studied and calculated by related experiments and finite element method (FEM) simulation. From these results, we suggested the appropriate combination of two superconducting wires to be used for the asymmetric non-inductive coils.

  • The floodlighting assists the pilot in taxiing the aircraft into and out of the final parking position and provide lighting suitable for passenger to embark and debark and for personnel to load and unload cargo. It is composed of sodium lamps which is consuming high energy. It needs to develop a dedicated LED lamp to replace the existing lamps. In this paper, We propose a suitable asymmetric angle of LED lamps to avoid a pilot's glare and to meet the standard illumination. For this, we analyze asymmetric angle of sodium lamps which are using in airport and confirm whether the illumination distribution and glare index meet the relating standards by using simulation method. Also, we study the needs of asymmetric characteristics of LED ramp by simulating the LED lamps with and without asymmetric characteristics of ramp respectively. With the simulation result, finally we propose the best asymmetric angle of LED lamp to meet the average illumination standard, and avoid a pilot's glare.

  • This study aims to examine whether symmetric effects or asymmetric effects of exchange rates exist in determining the money demand in Indonesia. Simple-sum money and Divisia money were included in different models for comparison due to the financial developments in Indonesia. This study uses time-series data from 1996Q1 to 2019Q4 for the estimation. The nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model is utilized to verify the asymmetric effects of exchange rates on money demand. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Phillips-Perron unit root tests were performed to verify the order of integration of the variables. The findings of this study revealed that the exchange rate is one of the most important determinants of money demand in Indonesia and the effect is asymmetric. The findings further indicated that money demand function, which incorporates Divisia monetary aggregate is parsimonious. Monetary targets such as money supply and interest rates are critical for monetary policy conduct to achieve inflation levels set by government. As the adoption of an inflation targeting framework needs to be in keeping with the flexible exchange rate system, the asymmetric effect of exchange rate changes can be used in exchange rate policy conduct to achieve financial system and price stability.

  • The probability distributio function (pdf) of transmitted symbols should be asymmectric for recovering the received data in the 3rd order blind equalizer system. In this paper, we hav edesigned the blind equalizer using symmetric-asymmetric (SA) and asymmetric-symmetric (AS) transforms for less computational complexities and robustness in the noisy environments. The method of SA and AS transform was peformed using natural logarithmic operation. This paper proves that the proposed in this paper can be performed as real time operation. This paper proves that the compression factor k has no effet on transmitted symbols. Also 3rd order equalization method proposed in this paper can be performed as real time operation. As a result of computer simulatio, the computational complexity of proposed algorithm is reduced to be an half of 4th order method and MSE is enhanced as 10dB at the case of 4-PAM and 15dB at the case of 8-PAM respectivley. Conclusively, we have found that 3rd order blind equalizer can be implemented when the pdf of transmitter is asymmetric.

  • This study deals with robustness bounds estimation for uncertain linear systems with structured perturbations where the eigenvalues of the perturbed systems are guaranteed to stay in a prescribed region. Based upon the Lyapunov approach, new theorems to estimate allowable perturbation parameter bounds are derived. The theorems are referred to as the zero-order or first-order asymmetric robustness measure depending on the order of the P matrix in the sense of Taylor series expansion of perturbed Lyapunov equation. It is proven that Gao's theorem for the estimation of stability robustness bounds is a special case of proposed zero-order asymmetric robustness measure for eigenvalue assignment. Robustness bounds of perturbed parameters measured by the proposed techniques are asymmetric around the origin and less conservative than those of conventional methods. Numerical examples are given to illustrate proposed methods.

  • Transient and asymmetric density distributions have been investigated by a digital speckle tomography with a novel integration method. Multiple CCD images captured movements of speckles in three angles of view simultaneously because the flows were asymmetric and unsteady. The speckle movements which have been formed by a ground glass between no flow and downward butane flow from an elliptical nozzle have been calculated by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. A novel integration method has been developed to obtain projection data from the deflection angles for the speckle tomography. The unsteady density fields have been reconstructed from the accurate projection values by the digital speckle tomography method using the developed integration method.

  • This research was carried in order to improve design technique for the vertical shaft of which design guide has not been proposed clearly. The deformation tendency of vertical shaft and distribution of the earth pressure around shaft were reviewed with both of theoretical earth pressure distribution suggested in design criteria and measured data which had been gained from 2 constructing shaft. The distribution of earth pressure applied on the vertical shaft was similar with the result of previous theory for the earth pressure proposed by Shin (2007). Moreover it was observed that asymmetric deformation and earth pressure around vertical shaft were caused by inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the ground. The asymmetric earth pressure ratio ($R_p$) in soil and weathered rock were divergent according to the shape ratio. In addition, it is more reasonable that the value of asymmetric earth pressure ratio ($R_p$) is considered less than 0.35 in the case of constructing shaft under rock.
